They are depressed because of the way they live. America is a muscle museum, where athletes are praised and idolised, and scientists and artists are shoved aside. They are crying because no amount of products, or stuff for your house, or middle American culture can cure the isolation of being treated as a consumer group or demographic. There is something missing from their lives, and they cannot ignore it any longer.

All these state sponsored faith schools, the promotion of junk food and music with no integrity. Consumption on a ridiculous level and TV with hundreds of channels with nothing on. Think about all their songs to date, United States of Eurasia, clearly a song that's against American consumerism, and their version of democracy.

@swatka2580 Their democracy isn't democracy at all, it's a dictatorship where the leaders making the decisions are behind the curtain. The politicians are just representatives for special interest groups: Oil & Gas, Farming, Military contractors, Banks and even some governmental organisations that are over funded. It's all starting to happen here. I agree that it's been going on at some level for years, more so after the war, but it's getting worse.

I think this video was pretty clever. I realise my interpretation may be way off base, but Muse load their songs with political, personal and social subtext. While the song may be about something else, the video speaks a message to me. I think it's about middle suburban America. These people are all doing normal things, in their decent houses, with their consumer products that make life easier. Yet they are all depressed.

not true about the title. it's the meaning of the song but the reason for the title--> The title comes from a dictionary that Muse used, which had 'muscle' immediately before 'muse' and 'museum' immediately after.

At the end there, it actually is the guitar! It's a nifty thing called a talk box. : )

It's really cool how it works (worth looking up) but it basically bounces the sound into the singers mouth and out again -- he lip syncs words, and just as if the sound were coming from his own throat and voice box, the sound gets shaped but his mouth into somewhat sounding like words as it comes out of his mouth. You see the effect best around 2:53

Hysteria and Stockholm Syndrome have 2 separate videos.

The difference: Released in different countries.

One of each was released in the UK and rest of the world and the other two were made for the US specifically.

I'm not sure the specifics of why they did that, but Muse have had a hard time (until recently, due to Twilight) breaking into America. I'm assuming the two videos made for America were supposed to intrigue us a bit more.
