I love Kaufmann, but traviata is way to lyric for him. He doesn't have the piani or mezza-voce for this. He usually does a superb O mio rimorso exactly because it's furious music but here his beautiful voice meets limbo when he was supposed to produce passionate, yet bright/light, sound.
Very bad Kaufmann. Ridiculous mezzavoce. To sing is not to scream. Listen to the superb Alfredo Kraus in this role, for exemple. Or Giuseppe Di Stefano, or Cesare Valletti. Poor opera if Kaufmann is the best tenor today as someone says...
This is a production where you would just have to tune out the staging (and the execrable hair styles) and concentrate on the wonderful performances and singing.
I am intelligent and sensitive, yet can find no redeeming qualities in this production. However, if you like it, then good for you. Too many of us are quick to insult fellow opera lovers' intellect or taste when we disagree on the relative merits of a production or interpretation. So I think ALL of us, myself included, need to stick to commenting on the production or the singing and not on insulting each other. That said, I don't get the production but enjoy the singing very much.
Good God, what a travesty! Is this puppet sitting at the coat-check the most famous curtisan in all of Paris. My imagination goes a long way, but this is unbearable
Poor Verdi, indeed. The action seems to be taking place at a coat check desk. The next line is "E ben, che diavol fate?" A very appropriate question given the mise-en-scène.
wonderful staging, intelligent and deep.
schafer fragile and delicate, kaufmann XIX century lover. very good.
thank you for uploading

@mark6230 If you think Alfredo Kraus is great you need to get the cotton out of your ears.

Schäfer and Kaufmann really are very good. But this staging is horrible! I hope and think, that they come back to the former stagings.
