It's not a college band as such. None of the players are actually taking degress in music. It's a universty band and the players are studying different subjects. They play purely for pleasure.
@saddlepotato510 you know what is actually disappointing? that instead of enjoying, some people just can't keep jealousy away [and yes, I bet you would've wanted to play with them].
This was awesome, guys. Reminded me of good old childhood days of tom and jerry ;D
Good point. The hall is small and really "swimmy". It sounded pretty loud in there on the night! The reverberation made it difficult to articulate at speed with any sort of clarity for the audience. The great conductor Otto Klemperer didn't have set tempi for his repertoire. His tempi changed from one hall to another. He wasn't interested in beauty of sound - articulation was his primary concern. What he did in the Royal Festival Hall simply wouldn't work in the Albert Hall or at Abbey Road.
yeah the tempo is faster we played it at stone mountain high last year and we took it faster if u listen to University Michigan play it they take it faster
Are you sure about the tempo? This video performance lasts for around 10 minutes and I also have an audio CD of the piece that runs for 11 mins 10 secs.
I played this my sophomore year of high school, way faster, but it is nice to hear this piece again :)

Really cool that you could get Paul Shaffer to direct.
Kidding, of course. :)

this is kind of disappointing, not to be rude. you should expect more from a college band.

The piece was deliberately performed at a slower tempo because of the echoey acoustic.
