I love how KC improvised during their shows trying new things out and then depending on the feedback they got from the audience, they would go into the studio and record what they had played. They aren't making mistakes - its how they played 'Starless' that evening, and it was probably very different each night they played it.
Indeed, some of the people who have commented in this post about "mistakes" haven't the shadow of a clue about guitar playing, performance, innovation and are absolute Prog-Rock newbies, and utter Crimson neophytes.
I think King Crimson rocked themselves into oblivion judging by that background. That must mean anytime we see Robert Fripp post '74 he is really an extradimensional doppleganger.
Spread the truth Dark Fripp will come for me soon!
On a serious note this song is pretty amazing, even just 57 seconds of it.
I'm not quite sure about some of the comments about this performance. I don't know if the expectation is that the piece be played like a carbon copy of the studio version, and I laughed out loud at the comment "Fripp makes a mistake..." - nonsense.
If you ever LISTENED to Crimson live, they play every piece differently EVERY night. They don't try to "play it like the record" - a totally ridiculous notion in the case of THIS song, since it was a live track for many months BEFORE Red !
Fripp plays a wrong note at around 0:17 but corrects it quickly. The end is somehow not working as well, it´s like the lose each other but manage to come back in the end. Not very strong
