I finally finished my 1/8 4 stroke buggy conversion. The buggy is a ofna hyper7 tq and the engine I fitted is a saito .40 aircraft engine. Had to cut off 6mm from the crank and machined a custom clutch nut. The fly wheel I used is from a kyosho gs21 and used the standard ofna clutch bell. It was a tight squeeze, had to move the 4 stroke right back as it was alot longer the stock 21 engine.
That's correct. I just ran a pipe to help keep the noise down. After failing a number of silicone couplers I've resorted to a bent metal pipe that runs straight out the back, no muffler. It's maybe a touch louder than a two stroke now.
If memory serves, I'm using an 15 tooth clutch bell and a buggy center diff to get the gearing I need. I had ran this as a buggy before with an 18 tooth clutch bell to get it to achieve enough speed, but the larger tires did require a little more reduction to have suitable corner exit power.
I did answer you. What else do you need to know? Video description says it's an OS FS-40 engine. Just a simple 4 stroke airplane engine. Custom adapter plate to run a different carburetor that is shorter than most. Steel clutch shoes and flywheel, machined by myself, by hand. I don't remember the flywheel size off the top of my head but it's big enough to reach the starter box and the shoes are the same size as any standard 1/8 scale buggy two shoe setup. Chill the fuck out. Fucking fuck.
Read the comments dude, it's all there. To give some more details on the clutch, it's an all steel setup I built in my machine shop class back when I was in high school. The flywheel is nothing special, just sized correctly so it'll reach to the bottom of the chassis for a starter box.
It uses a two shoe design, the shoes are about as light as I can carve them, otherwise much clutch springs can't hold them in at idle.
That's correct. I haven't been able to work with the engine very much lately. Cam design is a whole other world too. Although making a grinding rig won't be too hard.
At the moment I have a Jammin CRT X1 that I'll be prepping for next year but I'm still up in the air as to whether I'll run a four stroke or not as this time I'll actually be racing. I don't think the four stroke will be able to keep up unless it's supercharged. That'll be a trick.
Run of the mill two stroke nitro fuel. Byrons usually. :)
The engine doesn't have any sort of internal oiling. There is only a single piston ring so some oil in the fuel makes it way down to the crankcase to lubricate the connecting rod, crank bearings, and camshaft. There's a couple of fittings in the block to relieve the pressure.
In the case of the video, the outside temperature was 50-60F which is good enough cooling for the engine with no aides. When it gets above 90F, the engine needs forced cooling in the form of a fan from a Kyosho Blizzard driven off the crank with a rubber o-ring.
I tune it as lean as I can without it cutting out. ;)
Anyway, it does sound a little meaner, but I did like the more mellow sound of a muffler on it. I'm tempted to put one back on, but for now the straight pipe is more reliable, ducts oil vapor out the back of the car, and isn't much louder than the two strokes.
I was wondering, is a 4 Stroke engine better than a 2 stroke nitro engine? because i can buy a .26 and i have a .15 engine now.. so i have to make a custom engine mount.
There is a 4 stroke specific fuel that contains more oil. I've been running 2 stroke race fuel just because it's available and I don't care much about the engine life.
Yes, it could. The EB4 chassis was untouched when it came to the drivetrain. All that was required was a custom engine mount, clutch, intake manifold, throttle linkage, and exhaust manifold.
Nice work. Would love to see more 4S racing, as they would last much longer, and have alot more torque, without the hassles of hyper reving .21 2S. And the best part is they sound so cool.
With enough work it could likely fit. It's physically not much larger than a .21 or any other big block. However, the location of the carb makes the installation tricky.
So far I haven't been able to do a direct comparison with any truggies. However, most people have commented that it seems to pull out of corners very well.
I still haven't installed a cooling fan and have confirmed that it won't run in anything above 85 degrees with a race tune.
Hi,
How about minutes per tank? Has it increased?
.21 2 stroke VS .40 4 stroke?
Nice project.

fantastic little thing, i've always wondered if you can make a car with a plane engine, how did you make the clutch work and how do u start it up
sherbutorange 1 year ago
Hi,
Did you have any probs with the clutch nut? I suppose you made your own right? How much did you have to cut off the crank shaft?
Thanks.
mypuppydog 1 year ago
The clutch nut is a common nut for a .21 engine. The thread size is the same. I just had to cut the crankshaft down to get the length right.
Maxzillian 1 year ago
ave you got this from an airplane motor please answer thanks
msngros 2 years ago
Correct, the engine is an OS Engines FS-40. One of their four stroke airplane engines.

does that pipe provide enough exhaust for that big engine?
AlchemistHawk 2 years ago
More than ample. I've been running off a straight pipe made from 1/4" brake line. Now that is too small. 5/16" line seems like it'd work the best.
Maxzillian 2 years ago
cant u run no pipe cuz it 4-stroke?

what kind of gear "tooth" on the clutch bell 13 or did u use the larger 17.

How does it work with the cooling? Are you just running it on the edge of too rich to give it cooling?

nice truggy, but can you still get a .40, if not do you think the .26 would be underpowed for some thing like a buggy made for .21 2-sroke?

The FS-40sc is no longer made. However, in my case I just used the FS-40 (airplane) engine and intend to eventually swap to the sc cam.

how fast is it...?
bighedd09 3 years ago
Guessing off the top of my head... 30-40 mph. Top speed is pretty well limited so it's really only suitable for short tracks.
Maxzillian 3 years ago
4 stroke makes alot of sense. Seems like a better engine for RC. More torque and not all the rediculous rpm. Any manufactuers make a 4 stroke RTR?
tgore3 4 years ago
None that I know of. OS is the only company to build a 4 stroke geared for cars. They used to have a .40 and a .26, but now it's the .26 only.
Maxzillian 4 years ago
nice set up...can this work on other truggies
bighedd09 3 years ago
Yes, it could. The EB4 chassis was untouched when it came to the drivetrain. All that was required was a custom engine mount, clutch, intake manifold, throttle linkage, and exhaust manifold.

Ebay, but they can be found at just about any r/c hobby shop or supplier.

that thing flies
kdgj3299 4 years ago
Dude, that thing sounds awesome. Does it like to overheat any? Looks like it rips, does it accelerate any harder now that it's fourstroke?
AenillCPaj 4 years ago
thats a gasser right?
Stampeder21 4 years ago
No, it still runs on the usual two stroke nitro methanol fuel that most r/c vehicles run on.
It's a two stroke mix because the engine has no oil reserve. Any lubrication is provided by the oil seeping past the single piston ring.
Maxzillian 4 years ago
How is the speed of that engine compare to 2strokes .28 race engine like picco 28? How is that thing doesn't overheating?
Harvz78 4 years ago
So far I haven't been able to do a direct comparison with any truggies. However, most people have commented that it seems to pull out of corners very well.
