  • Holy shit tesselation makes heaps of difference! good thing i bought a 6970 last week WOOo!

  • How badly does tessellation affect ur fps?

  • @SuperPopscotch really badly. Using tessellation increases the poly count for objects. Tessellation is pretty cheap these days, throw in a alpha and a normal map on the object, and the system will calculate all the remaining, but it uses a lot of GPU. Check out Parallax mapping also, it's damn awesome, works similar to tessellation, only doesn't increase the poly count.

  • Does Tessellation create any extra burdens for the CPU or even RAM, or is this a purely GPU-related feature? As in, if I have a measly 2.6Ghz quad core CPU running a game just fine with a DX10 card, will it have any impact on performance if I upgrade to a DX11 card and use DX11 features?

  • @LaJin9292 it would depend, but in my experience DX11 is a huge wank, ie, maxing DX9/10 is more important than DX11 at 720p for ex.

Dirt2/3/F1 2011 etc barely look any diff DX9 vs DX11.

  • So happy I took geometry - I FUCKING UNDERSTAND TESSELLATION!

  • So..It's basically better 3d shapes and lighting?

  • @3likin It's using 2D shapes, connected (tessellation) to form 3D shapes. The higher the tessellation, the smaller the shapes which means more shapes, which is more detail.

  • People really need to stop using Windows XP.

  • Can you downgrade Direct x so it puts less stress on your computer?

  • @sk8erpro10

Some games out there support DX9, DX10, and DX11.

It's a little weird, but works I guess.

Some games only support DX10 now.

  • @Usul573 A ton only support DX10+ on PC. It's becoming the new DX9.

  • lighting appears more important than tessellation, still its nice "icing on the cake", probably more significant in saving memory

  • People who dont look for the smaller details and your average consumer should ignore tech specs and such....This is amazing and I can only wonder what types of programming went into it....

  • Bottom line: tessellation looks DIFFERENT, not better.

Some people, like me, are fine with a game not looking absolutely perfect, because if you actually play games, instead of watch graphical demos all day long, you'll tend to forget when a shadow isn't a smooth or when a texture is a little muddy.

If developing better looking games doesn't get in the way of the creativity of the art itself, or, more importantly, the game design, then it's fine, but that isn't always the case.

  • @SkellionPowalskiz

    Eh, it looks better.

I'm starting to notice the jagged edges that tessellation would take care of, but only really noticing when I look closely and I'm not actually in combat or something.

It's always good to give them as many tools to work with when it comes to making a game.

  • @Usul573 It's pretty cute that you just sidestep my comment by stating your opinion as fact, it's almost as if you have no better argument.

  • @SkellionPowalskiz

I didn't say my opinion was fact. And I just mean to add to your comment with my own views and thoughts.

  • @Usul573 You said "Eh, it looks better", not "Eh, I think it looks better".

Honest mistake, but seriously, there's a difference in how you state an opinion and how you state a fact. :P

I can appreciate "good" graphics, but I can also appreciate older games for what they were and still are. A lot of people act like every generation of games that came before are some sort of mistake to be forgotten, when they're anything but.

  • @SkellionPowalskiz

Yep, you can trip up, can't tell what kind of tone or meaning text has sometimes, sorry.

I have a lot of fond memories from the SNES era. Certainly it's smart to be able to enjoy games from any era. Sometimes they might feel a little odd or lose some appeal, but not always.

  • @Usul573 Well, I still can't stand people like the top poster that are glad to have the old days of gaming behind us. It's really disappointing when people can honestly say they would rather never play some of those games again, and could only play them if they had some sort of HD remake. It just goes to show what a bunch of spoiled brats modern gamers are.

  • @SkellionPowalskiz

    Some certainly are like that.

    Others are very wise.

I do feel gaming is hitting a bit of a wall of creativity these days, but who knows.

  • @SkellionPowalskiz on the contrary, it shows that we've matured and expect tech to expand, not regress for the sake of console wankers.

  • @TheKwod Yes, because calling someone that disagrees with you a "wanker" shows you've matured. Denial is an ugly thing, boyo.

Since when have PC games have to limit themselves because people still play console games? You do know they release different versions and port them from PCs to consoles, right? You argument is invalid, and actually the opposite of immature, seeing as how you can't accept different opinions.

Being a PC gamer makes your e-peen thiiiiiis big!

  • @SkellionPowalskiz i call fuckwits who do nothing but hype up crap "wankers"....and DX11 to me is a big wank.....it's like saying Dirt3 looks better than Crysis DX9 or 10.

The key to Crysis image quality is HIGH res textures....it's resolution not tesolution dummy.

  • @TheKwod Awwww, sounds like someone got angwy!

I'll tell you right now that I'm no tech nerd, I know barely anything about processors and widgets, but I know when a game looks like shit and when it doesn't.

Games like Crysis are garbage, simply because all they'll ever have to offer is more detail, more "realism", and little to no real artistic direction. If the only thing keeping you playing video games is how far technology can be pushed graphically, I feel sorry for you.

  • 2:05

    WACKY WAVING INFLATABLE ARM-FLAILING TUBE-MAAAAAN!!!!!

  • DirectX 20.

    DirectXXX.

  • LOL this is such bullshit. The images had different polygon counts obviously.

  • dang this thing helps alot.

  • I have Nvidia GT540M how can I turn on Tessellation

  • imo, unigine 2.0 heaven is the only one there a real difference

  • basicly, tesselation in games is incresed model quality, better shadows and more eye candy? Why the fuck are they implementing this if they don't know how to really use fucking tesselation....

  • Wow it's like everything is coming at me!! Please pardon my juvenile sense of humor

  • why pay 100's of $s for just smooth edges and shadows !??

  • @MyYTFolder Problems like those are because we're trying to go too fast too soon. It's neat to have these ideas and ideals, but I'd prefer they not realize them until they can make a card that doesn't weigh 10 pounds and cost a small fortune.

  • 101 people are directx 7 fans

  • basically...advanced AA and more geometry..doh...

  • There are two types of gamers: console and PC.

I prefer the latter, for obvious reasons. Not just for superficial minimalistic differences but for an immersive REAL gaming experience on high quality expensive machinery.

I love it, end of story.

  • Come on, is that all?!? It makes the game so heavy for some details that makes no difference in gameplay.

  • Srsly, no one will see a difference if you dont stop the game and look really carefully

  • I'll play games with tessellation in a few years when the price of the graphics cards comes down to a reasonable level, like 100 instead of 500. Hell, there's a few by some manufacturers that's over 800, like with every new generation. I have a GF 9800 GTX that I got for less than $150 over two years ago now I think, still runs most games at high. But like people are saying, as I've grown up I'm starting to care more about gameplay and not charcters that have shiny tits and bounce realistically.

  • What's the music please?

  • Finally I get what tessellation does. No wonder it makes my games lag so hard. :D

  • if the video has to point everything out then I don't think anyone will notice this.

  • @CoolGuyDaBest i notice low polygonal count and low resolutions everytime I play fallout 3?

  • @RyanMinaker You have got to be a real picky SOB to say the xbox and ps3 graphics are not good enough to be playable.

  • really glad i got my dx11 gpu's

  • @automobilejr sooooo, you came here to play minecraft?

  • Please, decrease the fps in my games by increasing the polygons on my screen!

  • wow

    what a huge diffrent!!

  • 100 ppl play their games on a console.

  • stop comparing hardware from 2011 to 2005 you pc idiots. also pc community is always crying about everything.

  • @Halo2fanBf2 *looks at name* lol. Explains your comment.

I'm the first to not care about graphics though, since over time they get better as technology becomes more accessible/cheap. But to go as far as to say we cry about everything? I'm pretty sure most of us enjoy being able to play games with mods.

  • @toolazytomakeoneup lets not forgett all the errors a pc have, Graphics driver issues, running out of memory, and games crashes and so on. I know mods are cool but they are a bigger reason that games crashes.

  • @Halo2fanBf2 only mod according to your equipment....u should see FO3 with HD texture pack 1080p on 26in LCD.....fuckin epic, unlike disgusting console.

  • @Halo2fanBf2 correct, we want progress, not console stagnation for mindless COD idiots.

  • I'm most impressed by the stonework and how tessellation really makes each individual stone pop

  • Only crysis utilizes dx11 well optimised for that game well, from what ive seen these are not things id care about.

  • i still like the unlimited detail stuff (btw it IS NOT FAKE)

  • Am I really going to notice the jaggies on a girls head in the audience while I'm racing by at 100mph?

  • @lowmax64 yeah it's not something you really care about... but let's be honest, i think we were all relieved when they invented Anti-Aliasing... those jagged edges were an eye-sore... but at least these developers are putting the little details into consideration... I just hope they don't forget that PLOT & STORY are the most important factors in a game. I have no problem with them perfecting 3d games into a more "ray-traced/rendered" environment, it's 2011 and it's about time.

  • @ClubBangerTV The algo is known for decades, so it was not invented for games. game devs just had to wait for hardware fast enough to apply it in realtime. you're right about the plot&story thing though.

  • @stell4you i know it was always available, but that's what i meant. it was finally applied for gaming back in 2005/2006 as soon as there was enough memory to process it.

  • Don't somebody think the "tessellation off" on Dirt 2 is better than with tessellation? They look "blocky", yeah, but they also look more real instead of some ugly blurry human-like creatures.

  • @215day there's no meaningful diff in D2/D3 with DX11/DX9....certainly not whilst driving....most important is GPU horsepower, ie, 1080p maxed.

  • @TheKwod

I was just saying, it seems Tesselation is only good on some games that support it or so.

  • ...The console vs PC argument is also so old and pathetic as hell. Get a grip, guys. Other side goes all "PC Masters race > everyone else", when many hardware requiring games are actually on console currently and there's complete lack of PC exclusive "hardcore" stuff, while the other side ignorantly thinks you can't use TV, controller, sound system and sofa with a PC.

  • Who cares... people forgot that game mechanics and depth make interesting games, not superficial factors, that take too much time and money to work on to actually make a good game. I can't relate with the graphic advancement hungry people. What is the rush to endlessly advance and get more and more eye-candy, instead of well designed games? Only few companies have the funds and manpower to create beautiful games, it's becoming harder and riskier for everyone else as the time goes...

  • @humppamonsteri lol thats like dating a girl because of her personality

  • @humppamonsteri we might as well just have kept tomb raider 1 graphics eh

  • @humppamonsteri

If your point is that better graphics leads to worse game play, then I strongly disagree. BatmanAC and BF3 are a couple of the most graphically advanced games out there, and I can tell you that the game play is amazing. They are my two favorite games right now.

  • @humppamonsteri It's because that advancement in graphics not only creates more "eye candy".. It immerses you further into the experience.. Not only that, it allows for developers to do more (if they can afford to) and create games they otherwise could not without the power.. I remember opinions like yours back in the sprite days, when polygons first hit the scene.. I'm glad nobody listened to them, because I LOVE me some 3d games!!!

  • @bliglum

I do agree with the immersion factor, but "do more" and create games they couldn't without the power, I'm not sure about that.

Certainly DX11 adds some nice new features for them to play with, but it's just nothing so far that seems worth getting all that excited about, it's good though.

We shouldn't ever think about this being "IT" for technology I feel.

  • @bliglum Some people need Advanced 3D Graphics to immerse themselves. These people have no imagination. Look at Minecraft! It's demanding people like you who take away from making the game good, and instead you like to paint your fricking fingernails to make them look pretty. (btw Why the f*** would you want "Smooth" heads of people in Dirt 2.....)

  • @thewowcreators Oh jeez.. Getting all preachy and self righteous now are we?.. People who like 3d graphics lack imagination? Give me a break.. Look man.. They are called VIDEO games.. which means the graphics are, in fact, the single most important component.. And advancement in graphics is natural. If you want to keep a closed mind, and play ugly games, fine. but it's not going to change things. And you want "smooth" heads because heads are not blocky, they are smooth!!!

  • @bliglum

No point to sticking to the past because only then things would not be able to improve or advance

  • @bliglum Russian heads are actually all blocky..hehehe....

  • @bliglum im still happy with my n64 games ...a lot more fun these new games ..prime example battle field 3 suffers badly in consoles or or so called AAA games that lack any replay value other then the cheap multiplayer

  • @skylinmegas9290 Yeah, that's a prime example of progess!! N64 was/is AWESOME!! It was so far ahead of its time. Ran fsaa WAY before it was cool!! Plus texture filtering, etc.. Made ps1 and especially saturn look old hat, by comparison..And yeah, many of the so called AAA titles are shitty.. So I stick to the better ones.

  • @bliglum so true ...man Nintendo makes the best games to bad they say family games but in the end they only cater to kids 12 and under

  • @skylinmegas9290 Yeah, like with the wii.. There are a few great games for hardcore gamers (like zelda and mario galaxy)... But most of it is just forgettable, family (kid) friendly shovel-ware rubbish.. kindof like most of the titles available for the x360 kinect :)

  • @bliglum Spot on:D People always accuse PC gamers of being focused only on the graphics, but its not just the graphics, its the capability of developers to create new and innovative experiences that can be enjoyed by gamers everywhere.

  • @humppamonsteri but we are gonna die in 2012!! joking

  • @humppamonsteri like skyrim for an example

  • @humppamonsteri im with you on this subjrct man ....the best thing to due is support real games that show some effort in there game like error handling or npc usefulness ...(brink im looking at you) man the list goes on

  • MUST. GET. NEW. CARD.

  • damn I already preordered skyrim for xbox...! When will MS combine the xbox games and pc games???? XBox 3?

  • @Shaby18

Actually there are rumors that Windows 8 may play xbox games. We shall see!

  • look at the difference in fps.

  • tesselation is just fancy talk for "more polygons and harder to run" :)

  • @zoomerzrewl no, it's a more efficient way to render millions of polygon. The GPU can easily render all the geometry, but the bandwidth between the CPU and GPU is too weak to support it. Tesselation means the GPU creates all the polygons, which eliminates the bottleneck and thus better performance (and memory usage).

  • @MouthofSaurons but also means that we need to buy 2 high end video cards just to try and get a stable framerate

  • @zoomerzrewl No it doesn't. As I said, it's a more efficient way to render polygons - and how many it draws can dynamically be adjusted. It doesn't have to be some crazy number. It's completely optional, nobody forces you to play at either zero tesselation or 50 million polygons only - that's what's so great about it.

  • @MouthofSaurons so if what you're saying is correct, a single high end card should produce higher framerates with dx11 and tessellation when compared to the same card running dx10 without tessellation. so the hardware companies are giving us better performance for less money???!!! WOW i never thought i'd see the day! lol what a joke

  • I have a EVGA GTX 470 graphics card running with intel core i 7 950, 12 gigs of ram in tripple channel, and i can play battlefield 3 in ultra settings on a samsung 27inch monitor at a resolution of 1920x1080, i get frame rates of between 28-36fps. I think i should upgrade my video card to GTX 580.

  • @rtshchand you should wait for the next cards to come out and get one that won't have trouble running every new game on the market

  • isn't this like ATI Truform?

  • Yes console players..

    Eat your heart out!

  • @mistervanderveer

Most console players are having too much fun actually playing their games to care about this..........

  • @Usul573 Console players, erm, you mean kids and fat retards that still live at home and cant hold a job?

Well, have a great time playing in low resolution with dumbed down graphics, being confined to a CONTROLLER with a whopping 15 buttons, or so. I mean, Jesus, what gamer still plays consoles? Like I said, its just for casuals and dummies, and everyone knows this and has known for the past 5 years since it became blatantly obvious consoles have failed in every way shape or form compared to PC

  • @mistervanderveer don't generalize.. many adults that grow up with the atari's and nes we prefer the consoles over pc's and there's something about playing in a "DEDICATED MACHINE FOR GAMING" that separates consoles over pc's imagine if i was saying that all the pc gamers are nerds and graphic whores that prefer losing a lot of games that you can only play on consoles just to have good graphics, you can't play dark souls, gran turismo, god of war, halo, metal gear solid 4...

  • @mistervanderveer you keep your graphics that i prefer sitting in my couch with degraded graphics but with my user friendly cheap console that has moe games

  • @karlvinland You really do sound like some spineless loser that simply does not know when he is overwhelmed and when to give up.

NO ONE thinks consoles are better than PC's, because of the impossibility. Guess what, console games are made on PC's. PC's have unrivaled hardware AND software. The PC is the most customizationable object in this universe, quite literally. Only simple being like yourself like to be tied to the back and have 0 options and play on a OUTDATED piece of generic shit.

  • Comment removed

  • @karlvinland you can hook up a computer to a tv simply by plugin the HDMI cord in you fool.

  • @mistervanderveer and what gamer still play consoles haha you re a joke? pc gaming is dying by now multiplatform games sells like shit, piracy is rampant, and many once important pc developers(like id software) are jumping to the console bandwagon, its otherwise welcome to the reality

  • @karlvinland Millions do. BTW, Valve and Blizzard are developers that are highly centered around PC development. Oh, and they are BOTH considered among the top developers in the industry and many gamers consider them to be the best at their respective genres of games that they make. Seeing as how Half-Life 2 has a 96 rating on PC, Portal 2 has a 95 on PC, TF2 has a 92 on PC, Starcraft 2 has 93 on PC and we are set to get CS:GO, Diablo 3 and SC2: HotS in 2012 which will all be amazing games.

  • @RH00D2 no man..less and less games are exclusive to pc nowadays and games like dark souls, demon's souls, red dead redemption that are truly gems are console only, valve USED to focus on pc but not anymore, left 4 dead, portal 1 2,etc. and you can bet that half life episode 3 and diablo 3 are coming for consoles as minecraft and the witcher 2, my point is: that pc has little to no exclusive games, in consoles you can play almost all the pc games and the exclusives like uncharted, mario or halo

  • @RH00D2 i can play half life 2 on my ps3(actually i finished it)team fortress2, and i don't give a shit about graphics on this ports, starcraft is an exception, portal 2 is on consoles too, counter strike is outdated, HotS is an expansion..

  • @karlvinland And also, the sales figures only show boxed retail sales. Consoles are still outdated and actually buy games in boxes. Almost all PC gamers buy games through digital distribution which is not included in the sales stats.

  • @RH00D2 i don't know about you but i've never buy digital games i like having physical copies of my games.. that way i can sell it or do whatever i want with the game.. the problem are not the digital sales, the problem is the rampant piracy, bioshock sold 5 to 1 in consoles vs pc and call of duty 4 was 10 to 1..4.1 million illegal copies of mw 2 were downloaded in 2009 for pc and why? fucking torrents, developers feel safe in consoles that's why you always see higher sales of games in consoles

  • @karlvinland You're just stuck in the past still. Digital downloads are way more convenient and I don't have to worry about ever losing my games or them getting destroyed by a screwed up disc drive. (Xbox 360, anyone?) Now, prove to me that those figures are real not made up. And oh yeah, piracy still happens all the time on console. The games even get leaked out before release. Killzone 3 leaked before release. Gears of War 3 leaked before release. Need more examples?

  • @karlvinland Hahahahahaha.

Dude, youre pathetic. You make NO sense, have NO valid points, and are clearly a poor loser that CANT AFFORD A GOOD PC.

Its so blatantly obvious. Jesus christ, look at your reasoning: "you keep your graphics that i prefer sitting in my couch with degraded graphics but with my user friendly cheap console that has moe games" HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Somebody get this idiot off the internet.

Seriously man, fuck you, youre just trolling and you deserve to be burned. PC > All

  • @mistervanderveer and i can afford a good pc with the latest graphic card or whatever, but as i said CONSOLES HAS MORE GAMES and have waaaay more support than the pc, you miss a lot of good games only to have better graphics! what a pathetic loser, do i want to spend like 1000 dls just to play with "awesome graphics" fuck that.. i have more important things to spend my money, you are nerd and a graphic whore ... sorry but that is the truth

  • @karlvinland Want more?

  • @mistervanderveer any time :)

  • @Usul573 Plus, the differences are GIGANTIC, not just huge.

Why buy a new console then if you can just play the NES or gameboy black and white? Technology is MEANT to evolve. VHS<DVD<BLUray anyone? Oh right, I bet youre still watching all your shit on Betamax..

Your logic makes no sense at all.

  • @mistervanderveer you stll use BLUray, thats like 3 years ago, mass storage mode on phones is the newest thing

  • @mistervanderveer

Don't look so gigantic to me.

Of course, the PC game will do better resolutions, and some more technologies, but this video shows how DX11 does pretty subtle upgrades.

It's not like I think all technology should stand still, or that there was no reason to upgrade past a NES, but let's just talk about the Xbox 360 here.

Considering all it's capabilities, how it can do any type of game, very detailed characters and so on, some people would be happy for maybe five more years.

  • @mistervanderveer or save $900.

  • @mistervanderveer i'd say eat your shit and thats that! lol

  • @blaze909 Enjoy your shitty low quality small definition boring 6 year old outdated casual console.

I will be laughing at you like I am now.

  • @mistervanderveer r u tard? i got no console dumbass

  • @blaze909 What the FUCK are you talking about? Why the fuck do you comment on my comment anyway? Eat your own shit and thats that.

Are you fucking stoned or drunk or something? No one cares about you, go away.

  • @blaze909 And learn to TYPE you fucking illiterate dipshit. You look like an idiot and a fool.

    "r u tard" Jesus Christ.....

  • @mistervanderveer eat my shorts kid

  • @blaze909 Wow, what a surprise, another KID that thinks hes tough.

Youre pathetic, you make no sense, you write as if youre a caveman: youre a child.

Pathetic little child. Go eat shit. Youre blatantly jealous of someone who actually has a thumb up arent you. Typical childish behaviour.

Eat shit and die, please. No one cares about you, go away.

  • @blaze909 No one cares about little kids, go away.

  • @blaze909 Utterly pathetic.

  • @mistervanderveer Who gives a shit about graphics? I'm satisfied with my Ps3.

  • @MrCrazydooker Hahahahah.

Enjoy your shitty outdated 6 year old piece of shit. No one with a beast of a PC cares about you and your little console world.

    Stop boring me.

  • @MrCrazydooker go play ps1 hater

  • @RyanMinaker I didn't hate I said I don't care.

  • name do programa

  • is direct x 11 working on Vista?

  • @berzu21 Depends if you have a GPU that supports DX11.

  • Metro gains the most out of any of the games listed here by using DX11, it looks almost like a whole new game

  • So basically better walls and barely noticeable shadow upgrades.

The fact that they have to actually pause the video and add arrows so people can notice the "improvements" says a lot about it.

Now, I'm going to upgrade to Crossfired HD6950s soon as part of my usual end of the year upgrade, but Tessallation is in no way the reason I'm doing it. Still hoping developers come up with something that makes me glad I have Tessalation capable cards, because so far so far it's just not worth it.

  • @Raydeus

Even professional reviewers do admit that tessellation is mostly a subtle effect so far.

I do notice the lack of it sometimes now though.

A shoe or face or head or something having some edges.

  • sorry to continue my rant but: if this was such a must have feature so drastically awesome, why does the video have to explain what changed? shouldn't we be able to just see it right off the bat? or did everyone see the exact same alien in both shots at 1:39 like i did? :P i know im a hater, and im a hater with dx11 not feeling more special than someone who only has dx10 :P

  • so tessellation just makes stuff fatter? this to me is like the difference between 720p and 1080p most people don't care. if this is what people are basing their PC gaming being better than consoles on, lol @ you :P Enjoy your fat and more rounded polygons I will stick with the slim rigid ones :P even on this pc...it rips through stuff and I do play games with Dx11 on, but never would have noticed a damn thing without this video :P List ur best games a child, bet the graphics didn't matter then.

  • Not bad but there is not to much difference...Only in crysis 2 dx 11...

  • I would never notice difference... To see it u have to make a screenshot and to examine it hardly.... WTF?

  • dx11 on the next xbox?

  • @Cpillin425 nope but on the ps3 yes!!

  • @PockyWord The PS3's GPU is a modified Nvidia 7800 which is a DX9 card. No DX11 to be seen there.

  • This is the answer to: what "next generation" consoles will look like? = DirectX11. Obviously not a huge leap like ps2 from ps3...Hearts broken everywhere (especially ps and xbox fans) LOL

  • Seriously shadows? who gives a fuck

  • @nadsjaya if you don't like ultimate graphics, what did you come to do?

  • how do you turn tessellation on?

  • The girl doesn't get a bigger butt with DX11 in Dirt 2. Do not want.

  • Respond to this video...

  • I noticed one of the stairs required tessellation to draw, that does not appear to be a correct representation of tessellation.

  • @bwrightau

I believe that was the displacement mapping

  • Is tessellation just a kind of optimization?

  • tesselation got 120 fps off.

  • Nice but mostly useless thing

  • Lol at the focus on the round surfaces not actually being round. Better to show people the how than just the what. Since you had the Heaven demo running, you could've shown a glimpse of the framewires.

That said, this is a much better video to get a good grasp of what tessellation is:

    /watch?v=4G9anRoYGko

  • All that hardware tessellation does if I understand correctly is to make it simpler to scale to differently powerful hardware, since the model quality can be changed from the same base model. Plus that it might save space since the models can be lower resolution. The improved quality could just as easily been achieved with higher resolution models.

  • @FreeScience

    At the expense of performance.

  • @AnonRanGER01 Why would the performance be worse assuming the tessellation is at full detail? Because it can lower the detail when frame rate is dropping? The raw "requires computation" should be equal when both objects are loaded into memory, while loading and unloading a static higher resoltution mesh would introduce latency.

  • what's so wrong having a few things not being perfectly round weither it's done by high end video cards or high processing speed. I admit still play some under 16 bit colour depth and low resolution if it's readable that is.

  • @pilebomber what do you mean by wrong? Nobody is saying "ALL OBJECTS MUST BE ROUND!" This technology allows engines to make more realistic spaces, giving game designers more tools to make their games look and play how they want. If they want a chunky, cartoonish visual style (TF2) they can still do that.

  • @snowpdx

So if this technology is inside the hardware there's no need for the pc to make the CPU render any of the graphics like it had formally done completely back in the 90s?
