Haha! I've been in service in the Bundeswehr until like 7 years ago. I am still laughing hardly, when remembering a visit from US comrades. Half the the guys were walking around with a black eye the next day after firing the MG 3. The kick indeed is quite strong if you're not uesd to it.

Yep we are. Its a slightly altered version of the MG42, they changed the caliber to 7,62 x 51 mm NATO and decreased the rate of fire from 1500 rpm to 1200 rpm to increase its accuracy :)

After 500 shots the barrel glows... With 1200 in sustained fire you wouldn't hit anything, but destroy the barrel and your weapon...

@Aniki1609 Actually the MG3 like most modern machine guns fires from an open bolt. For this reason to have a cook off in and MG3 (or an FN minimi, or an FN Mag) the feed tray would have to be hot enough to ignite the primer and in such case it would just blow up in the feed tray likely disabling the gun. Any runaway guns in these MG's would have to be due to mechanical failure and not overheating. Also firing 2500 rounds without a barrel change is possible but definitely not advisable.

If it was not for that we would have won that war in a matter of months. Besides the only reason they used Russian tech is because it was cheap and it was what was avalable.

The one thing that set them apart was that the U.S. had the second best equipped army of WWII, where as Russia just pumped troops in. Look up statistics on the different German SS divisions.
