notice that when you ally with the papal states the popes reputation goes straight to the top. Realistically, the pope has no interest in military alliances. the pope rep on medieval 2 total war is actually relations twisted into "what the pope thinks of you" when it is really your relations with the papal states.That is the unrealistic thing about M2TW. Why dont total war stop being lazy and actually make it what the pope thinks of you, not a twisted relation!!!

milan are in bed with papal states all the way it gets gay and emtional when you attack milan papal states start acting like a boyfriend faction hating every time you attack milan its pure gayness after a while inquistor starts coming after you just to protect their boyfriend faction milan.

Gosh I hate the papacy in-game, but at least once you have enough cardinals you get some free conquests against fellow catholics until he excommunicates you, then with an army stationed right in Rome you kick his ass and kill him and rig another election for a pope from your faction and you keep doing it until there are no other Catholics left. :). My "man of the hour" general in Rome had 6-7 stars just from killing the popes over and over. XD

@pacomcl easy, just do missions successfully, do successful crusades, and dont go for glory attacking christian factions unless they are excommunicated. also you can donate money or assassinate him and vote for your own pope in there. the easiest way though is to build churches and cathedrals.

@Kanenkitten you can get inquistors but u need to download a mod to allow you to play as pala states, its amazing i'm trying it out now, i can burn muslim factions, orthdox factions and catholics 4 heresy! you can burn any agent even princess's BUT they have 2 be outside a city which sucks but still epic, u cnt recruit um, they appear in regions with low relgion or summin but its like 50% chance kil lrate n verytime they kill they get a betr chance next time,

you can bribe armies, but you have to pay a lot to get a result and yup the inquisitors are there BUT you cant set them on anyone, they decide where to go depending on certain conditions like being in poor favour with the pope or just plain excommunicated (well Ive never found a way of settng them on anyone at any rate)

You have to have the luck that a papal army is nearby, and those odds are very small

Just get yourself an alliance with Papal States (easy to do exept for HRE) and go to war with one of your neighbors. Then lock all your big armies in your cities and leave a weak army standing right next to the pope. Since Papal State always moves last you're pretty much guaranteed to get the pope into war with your enemy.

Then all you have to do is have the pope call a crusade against your enemys capital, and voilá: You've won yourself lots of cash, a highly developed city an experienced army, great retinue for your general and Papal favor up the arse.

It's cheating, but it sure is fun!

This was not a hotseat campaign. It was mere chance, the Papal army were just where I wanted them to be.

That wouldn't work. Playing as Papal States eliminate most of the elements of the papacy from the game (and pretty much fucks things up a great deal) If he was playing as Papal States, we wouldn't see excommunications at all. This is genuine, I've done it myself.

They just get turned off if you play them.

I don't think he will crusade against a catholic faction.

If you have general with at least 8 other units in its army, click on the button in the bottom right (you use this button to hire mercenaries and stuff), then when the scroll comes up to hire mercenaries, look at the bottom left of the scroll, one of the icons should say "join crusade". Reply back if you still cant find it.

it is more easier when you do the same thing on the sea..be close to an papal navy and enemy still attack you..

the pope had an army in one the reinforcement slots (the brown area around the city). so when he attacked the city the pope's army automatically participated as well because the game thought they were reinforcements

and because the pope, unwillingly, participated in the assault on genoa the AI interpreted that as a declaration of war from the pope and in turn had france declare war on the pope as well. and every catholic country at war with the pope is automatically excommunicated.
