Not at all, he was just being Grammatically correct - if he was writing about any god he would of used a small `g`, as in - "I don't believe in any god" - however he was referring to the Christian god so used the name he is often referred to ,ie. God.
I don't believe in Santa Claus, but would never write it santa claus with small s & c.. think about it - although the swearing lets him down so your other comments are pretty much on the ball :)
