There are a lot of liberal towns in MT that tend to rock the conservative boat. Thank you, TYT, for giving a shoutout to my large, yet lightly populatet state for doing the right thing.
Montana has a habit of telling the government to go fuck itself. I've been in 45+ of the 50 states and I can tell you...a lot of federal laws that other states need...doesn't apply to Montana...and is usually considered either nonsense and we don't want it....or common sense...and we don't need it. But whatever state you're in...you really shouldn't like this Citizens United anyways. Its rubbish.
The ulitimate problem here is that corporate entities have big bucks to donate and this results in politicians working for corporate leaders and not for citizens. All corporate donations should be illegal.
No, Citizens United was an excuse the 5 republican members oft the Supreme Court used to declare that corparations are people and that money equals speech, therefore it said Congress could not pass any laws prohibiting unlimited secret corporate donations to political candidates. Previously there were many limits and disclosure rules around the bribery of politicians.
LEGAL definition of person: "1) a human being. 2) a corporation treated as having the rights and obligations of a person. Counties and cities can be treated as a person in the same manner as a corporation. However, corporations, counties and cities cannot have the emotions of humans such as malice, and therefore are not liable for punitive damages unless there is a statute authorizing the award of punitive damages."
Corporations are not people... If they were, Rick Perry would have already executed one in Texas by now... God knows there are plenty of them who deserve the death penalty...
@norvman The thing is, when the FEC told Citizens United that they couldn't air an anti-Hillary Clinton documentary on television, it was not some walking, talking, bug-eyed, living logo that walked straight out of a School House Rocks infomercial and into the courtroom to defend its 1st Amendment rights; it was a person.
A Constitutional Amendment to get the money out of politics is needed, but the sloppy and vague wording of "corporations aren't people" is problematic because they kind of are
Look, it's just obscene in the first place to suggest that corporations are people. Of couse they are not. And if we are going to pretend they are then I want them paying tax rates on their revenue and at the same rates as I do. They will instantly claim they are not people. They are tools for business organization.
Barack Obama should nominate the entire Montana Supreme Court to the U.S. Supreme Court (as there are technically no limits on how many justices serve on the Supreme Court provided that the Senate confirms the nomination).
@safewaysecurity Because I know the founding father's did not anticipate the current election process. Because I believe the doctrine of one person one vote is much more important than trying to be a strict adherent to a document over 200 years old. Because I don't believe that corporations and unions deserve the same amount of protection in the political arena as an individual citizen. Also TYT, I appreciate the corporation bashing, but its not all about corporations.
@xXTheProRookieXx I'm confused. Do you support amending the first amendment or abolishing it and replacing it? That's fine even though I disagree but if that's the case then you should be advocating for a constitutional amendment and not bashing a decision which falls in line with the amendment and previous 1st amendment jurisprudence.
@july7nyc Well when I read the first amendment it starts with " Congress shall make no law " that's pretty clear. They can't make a law that deals with restricting speech. Corporations are not people but the first amendment does not say it's a right only for people it's says that congress has no right to restrict the listed activities. Also all a corporation is is essentially a group of people in legal writing. By denying them free speech you are infringing on freedom of assembly as well.
@safewaysecurity it depends on where you stand with corporate personhood. i don't happen to think corporations are people, therefore i don't think they deserve first amendment rights

Your first obvious error is that bribery and money are not speech. Your second is that I can start 40 corporations tomorrow and have no employee in any of them; so you think I just created 40 people. This is a simple construct to enable political bribery.
@dtorfleming Citizen's United wasn't really about contributions. They put out a documentary that dealt with Hillary Clinton. It took money to make that documentary. Are you saying that a documentary that exposes a candidate and puts out a point of view is not speech because it costs money to produce the video?
You mean the basis for Citizens United wasn't about donations. The case was supposed to be about the Hillary movie, but the court ruled significantly beyond that scope to invent new aspects that were completely unrelated.
And it may be a form of speech to make a movie, but it is not speech for Koch Industries to make secret donations through anonymous PACs in exchange for influence in that politicians agenda.
@dtorfleming Everything takes money. It takes money to produce a documentary it takes money to put out advertisements. You didn't answer my question. Should it be illegal for a group to put out a video about a candidate because it cost money?
@safewaysecurity Huh? This is not about whether a video criticizing a politian is legal or not, it's about whether corporations can donate unlimited amount of money to politicians. Corporations are incredibly more powerful and influencial than any regular citizen, and financing a video is far from being similar to giving millions and millions of dollars to a bunch of politicians so that they pass laws or contracts that favor your business over competition.
The governor of Wisconsin will take a Koch brothers call at any hour or rush to their mansion to meet them. Will the governor take your call? Why is that? Is that what you want for American democracy? Is that democracy at all?

While I agree with cenk that CU must be overturn I can't help but realize the hyspocriy. Actually Cenk is not being hypocritical. The liberal/progessive position(my position too) is that individual freedoms are to be respected, whether it's thru the states and/or by federal action. We believe in a comprehensive approach when it comes to having a government that respects our freedom.
The liberal position is that abortion is the individual choice of a woman, because it's her body. Also the liberal position is that corporations CANNOT trump people.
"Corporations are people my friend." And normal people are machines that can be used and abused by corporations in the persute of happiness. Only in America.
A corporation is merely a group of people with a collective investment. Think of what a right is. It's something the government is barred from infringing on. Political speech is one of those guaranteed in the constitution. The government cannot prohibit groups of people from making political speech or paying for it any more than they can to individual people. If a corporation does not have the right than neither can a union or a political party. Or even the young Turks.
All of a sudden this guy is an advocate of state sovereig... excuse me, states' rights?
I don't understand how a person can continually contradict themselves w/out any apparent realization (& to be so blind to one's own hypocrisy to actually call out some one else). When people advocate states' rights concerning issues he is a proponent of, like abortion, he takes a completely opposite stance.
Guy forget conservatives, check yourself. Either you're in favor of state's rights or you aren't.
@mundie33 Cenk's opinion on this issue concerning state's rights is exactly opposite to Cenk's opinion concerning states' rights on the issue of abortion. You can easily verify this by viewing his comments on that issue by going through this channels video history.
So, sorry you thoughtless partisan fool, reality bites.
Cenk wants abortion to be legal in all 50. He believes every state should respect a woman's right to choose (as they should). If Roe v Wade were overturned he would applaud any state that challenged that.
Cenk wants Citizens United overturned. He wants any and all states to challenge Citizens United for the piece of shit decision it is.
I don't see the conflict. Sorry there troll, have you slapped yourself yet today?
@UtubeMyAccountName how is that hypocritical? the whole idea of 'states rights' is a conservative ploy to undermine social reform.
i see where you're coming from but ideologically he's totally 100% pure. roe v wade was one of the greatest scotus decisions - citizens united quite possibly the worst.
what you're failing to see is that he actually realizes how the scotus works and how laws are made and see this as a first step in overturning that terrible CU decision by constitutional amendme
He is supporting the idea of states' rights now ONLY because he agrees with these states on this issue, not because he actually believes in states rights. At best it's opportunistic, but in his case it's hypocritical, because he has actually spoken against states' rights (often) in the past.
Either Roe v Wade was just as bad a decision as Citizens United (and for the exact same reasons), or it was just as good. You can't have it both ways.
Wow, the GOP is going to be VERY supportive of Montana's Supreme Court to allow Montana to Govern by their own "State Laws"....
Oh wait... No that's not right, the GOP only wants "States Rights" when the States are doing exactly what the GOP wants them to do...
Montana, You Keep Fighting That Terrible Piece Of Legislature That Takes Away The Voices Of The American People And Gives It To The Highest Bidding Corporations & Their Lobbyist.
If it's a federal law, they can't opt out of it as a state, only as individuals. But it's great to have them join the fight to overturn Citizens United.
The Roman Republic started out as democratic and small. Over the next several hundred years their government grew and grew until it was much larger than what it was originally. Nearing the end it was controlled almost completely by the rich, and every politician was owned by someone rich. They turned into a Empire with single emperor that ruled their nation.
This is just one more reason and proof that big government and bureaucracy doesn't work to the people's best interest, and one more reason why you should give the middle finger to the establishment by voting for Ron Paul.
@toastm4n you really think the SIZE of the government has anything to do with this? ron paul might SAY he advocates small government which leaves people alone, and yet he's all for removing the right of choice for what a woman can do with her own uterus.
ron paul is a fucking hypocrite. he wants small government for the corporations and big government for the little people so he can spit on them and tell them how to live according to his bullshit ideology.
All this talk about Montana makes me want Spinach Dip. Montana's makes the best Spinach Dip, and they serve it with deep fried pita. You can get it baked too, but it's so much better deep fried. And you can get as many refills of pita as you want.
(For any Americans out there, Montana's is a restaurant in Canada. If you think it's weird that a Canadian restaurant would be named after a US state, look up Swiss Chalet and Boston Pizza)
@BrandonSchleifer Nice! I'm from Boston and I never knew that a chain called "Boston Pizza" existed. Thanks for dropping some knowledge from the north:p
@BrandonSchleifer You are one fuckin' weird dude. Either that or you are advertising for a company you have an interest in. WTF are you actually doing, just spanking it randomly? You should be ashamed you represent Canada.
Yay, Montana! This makes me sad that I'll be leaving my beloved home state in February for a conservative county in Minnesota. At least its not Bachman's district though. And MN is a sometimes blue state.
This is great news, but it's still not enough. 48 other states still support this bullshit court decision. Alot of people don't even know about citizens united, the word about this ruling needs to go out.
As long as union money is taken out of politics as well then Cenk is right. Can't believe I said that but I did. Still can't stand the fact he failed to mention union influence. FAIL
Let me tell you, as a citizen from Portugal, a country where not only elections are funded by the public BUT also where lobbying is illegal, that getting money out of politics will never happen. It's not a magic solution to anything, the corruption will still be there, democracy will still be something that happens to entertain the masses every 4 years.
Is it an improvement over the current system? All signs point to yes. Will it fix anything important? All signs point to no.
@RudyBeoulve I can't agree. Looking at the systemic corruption of the US political system, I think it's fairly obvious getting corporate money out of politics will have a significant effect on how the country is run. No one is saying it's a cure-all, no one thinks all political corruption will disappear, but if corporations like Goldman Sachs can't buy politicians, or employ them after a very friendly career, of course we've fixed something important.
@Fangtorn The problem is that everything you described still happens in countries (I speak for mine) where everything like that is illegal. If you don't mind, I'm going to send you a link by. It's in Portuguese, but I'll translate what matters, everything else is just numbers. Big numbers.
I'm not saying it's not a good change, I'm saying it won't stop Goldman Sachs from buying your politicians. You just won't know about it because they'll also have to pay to cover it up.
As long as you give other human beings power over the rest then they will be bought. So getting money out of politics is laughable. Thats why government if any should be local and small. Less to corrupt and less damage when it does corrupt.
I'll never in all my yearrs understand how the ACLU supported citizen's united. They're an organization i have imense respect for but i just can't understand why they'd stab the people in the back like that
Cenk, wolf-pac is forgetting the most important part of what needs to be changed. Check out the Berry Amendment: MONEY IS NOT SPEECH; corporations are not people.
The most important part of that amendment is money is not speech. Your amendment does not go far enough. Please, wolf-pac, adopt the Berry amendment: MONEY IS NOT SPEECH; corporations are not people.
Government should pay campaign expenses. Yes this would bring tax up but then you just tax the rich more (not the poor cause that's just stupid) and stop funding unnecessary wars. This would take money out of politics and essentially mean that if a politician accepts corporate money it is a bribe (which is unethical and illegal).
Citizens united. Is that the law where the united states supreme court basically committed treason by allowing unlimited political donations from corporations? That is treason in any democracy
Clarence Thomas needs to be investigated for ethics violations. He is very partisan and corrupt. He is always that fifth vote. How many times have you seen the SCOTUS vote 5 to 4? He is for the corporations not for the people.
@Sylinic You heard wrong, Ron's all for removing federal power to the states. BUT if a state decided to turn into a mini-fascist state, hey, that's up to the states, and there should be no recourse in the Federal system
@JasonCrowell Well he'd give the power to the states because that's what the constitution dictated, but he personally is vehemently opposed to it, and we both know you're not being rational and that won't / can't happen.
But enjoy your fallacy and voting for a blue warmonger who will fuck you in the ass for another four years.
@Sylinic Who's being irrational? He'd give the power to the states, and then if they chose to become a fascist state, they could. He may be for personal rights, however, he's opposed to having a recourse to the Federal government if the State violates your rights. The Ron Paul theory of interpreting the Constitution more resembles the failed Articles of Confederation
This is why some white nationalist and xtian dominionists have latched on to Ron, to let them take control of states
@JasonCrowell (I do not, however, think he would be able to succeed at returning us to the Articles era, there are too many checks and balances against the devolution of the Federal state)
I'll vote for the "blue warmonger" who doesn't seem too mongerish, vs a guy that would be truly, spectacularly useless
@Sylinic Ron Paul big on personal freedoms? Like, say, abortion? Do your research into his view on abortion, as well as his voting record in the subject.
@criskity Lmao so dogmatic, dude. Personal freedoms stop at yourself. I'm pro-choice, but I respect his opinion, and he's right, but I don't value life as he does. In abortion you're killing another being, it's not a matter of "My body".
Corporations butcher "beings" on an industrial scale for hamburgers, do some critical thinking, a human featus is no different from a pig faetus during the period abortion is allowed.
Except for the fact that both are neither pig nor human but practically the same thing.
.
And I need not go into the outlandish hypocrisy of the War&Death Party to rant about individual rights' yet prohibiting this, about free market yet interfering in private abortion clinics and have the most deplorable policies towards people who actually live.
"..War&Death Party to rant about individual rights' yet prohibiting this, about free market yet interfering in private abortion clinics and have the most deplorable policies towards people who actually live."
what do free markets have to do with private abortion clinics? Free market societies can not be turned into free for all jungles, social standards must prevail
socialist Sweden has turned you into a far left monster, sad to say
The whole point of the free market is that it is a free for all jungle, oh you dumb little genie.
.
Alas I agree, social standards must prevail and hence no free market should exist on areas including health care, social services, law enforcement, defense, electricity supply etc.
"... a human featus is no different from a pig faetus during the period abortion is allowed."
obviously you speak for yourself! Too bad your mommy didn't abort you and turn you into a nice pork ham!!
it's easy to understand the mass killings of tens of millions by far left pigs such as Stalin and Mao, like you they saw their victims as mere pigs not humans!
You US pro lifers are a joke! Your Agent Orage crime part I+II are unpunished yet you dare to pose yourselfs as protectors of unborn life. You cannot process what an abominable joke you are.
@criskity I keep asking that same question of Ron Paul fans...they think its somehow better that he wants to take this power from the federal gov't and hand it over to the states.I'm saying I don't care whether its federal or state gov't, neither have any business making a decision in any woman's womb. The decision to bring new life into this world is an important one, & should be a woman's choice over her own body.
You twats are the most pathetic jokes that breath these days. PUNISH those who´re responsible for Agent Orange part I+II!
Oh forgot you´re too damn retarded to understand how US politics has caused this in the first place! Go prayin´and hope "god" holds a comfortable place for cynic hypocrits like you.
all this talk about my being a ...(gulp!!).. troll!! Where and when has it been established that "trolling" is bad?? You little hypocrite do it all the time to bash/smear right wingers!
I had a stupid far left clown even post a comment to my profile claiming that the internet would be a much safer place if trolling was outlawed!! haha,..just how stupid/delusional/perverted/deranged/out of touch with reality are far left assclowns?
all this crap from an ignorant citizen of a Country that started 2 world wars killing tens of millions innocent civilians including children, invented ovens to kill Jews by the millions, had numerous killing squads shooting civilians dumping them into mass graves, bombing numerous cities etc!
don't you dare talk about US politics, how about German politics that brought in the Nazis and supported them?
Using you dimwitted logic, are German people precluded from social views?
@genie0390 like the US is any better than Germany. the US slaughtered millions of native americans using total war tactics, the US has overthrown the governments of various countries just to install US friendly dictators with horrid human rights records, and finally the US fire bombed entire japanese cities of non military importance with the knowledge that most japanese buildings are "made of paper" and that the fire caused by the bombs made more damage than the bombs themselves.
the US slaughtered millions of natives? wonder how many millions Germanic tribes couple thousand yrs ago slaughtered for the territory they now occupy? How about the Germanic tribes that slaughtered ancient Romans, destroyed western Roman empire?
US installed the modern Governments of Germany and Japan, btw!
as for bombing of Japanese cities, US didn't start the war
@genie0390 the Germanic people were fleeing from the mongols who were in east Europe by 1279 and the Romans did not accept them as refugees, many of these tribes banded together in desperation and attacked the Romans yes, but they had good reason. besides the two of those tribes would settle in Britain ever heard of the anglos and the saxons? by your own logic white americans have blood on there hands.
Heh, the story of Montana reminds me of that one Brad Pitt movie.

What would be the best case scenario here would be for the other 48 State Supreme Courts to band together to issue a challenge to this decision.
At a minimum make them OWN it - make them DEFEND it and MAKE IT PUBLIC. Expose them for the partisan hacks that they are.

UtubeMyAccountName 2 months ago
@UtubeMyAccountName Cenk's opinion is ironic and relates to the hypocrisy of conservative views.
Sorry troll you lose
mundie33 2 months ago
@mundie33 Cenk's opinion on this issue concerning state's rights is exactly opposite to Cenk's opinion concerning states' rights on the issue of abortion. You can easily verify this by viewing his comments on that issue by going through this channels video history.
So, sorry you thoughtless partisan fool, reality bites.
UtubeMyAccountName 2 months ago
@UtubeMyAccountName i've seen just about every TYT video there is
Cenk wants abortion to be legal in all 50.
Sorry there troll, have you slapped yourself yet today?
mundie33 2 months ago
@mundie33 ??? Are you dumb or something?
The argument you just made proves my point. Roe v Wade & Citizens United are the same thing. SCOTUS decisions.
That he supports states' rights on one issue, and opposes states' rights on the other is the very hypocrisy I am referring to.
UtubeMyAccountName 2 months ago
@UtubeMyAccountName how is that hypocritical? the whole idea of 'states rights' is a conservative ploy to undermine social reform.
i see where you're coming from but ideologically he's totally 100% pure. roe v wade was one of the greatest scotus decisions - citizens united quite possibly the worst.
what you're failing to see is that he actually realizes how the scotus works and how laws are made and see this as a first step in overturning that terrible CU decision by constitutional amendme
mundie33 2 months ago
@mundie33 How is he ideologically pure?
He is supporting the idea of states' rights now ONLY because he agrees with these states on this issue, not because he actually believes in states rights. At best it's opportunistic, but in his case it's hypocritical, because he has actually spoken against states' rights (often) in the past.
Either Roe v Wade was just as bad a decision as Citizens United (and for the exact same reasons), or it was just as good. You can't have it both ways.

The Roman Republic started out as democratic and small. Over the next several hundred years their government grew and grew until it was much larger than what it was originally. Nearing the end it was controlled almost completely by the rich, and every politician was owned by someone rich. They turned into a Empire with single emperor that ruled their nation.

RudyBeoulve 2 months ago
@RudyBeoulve I can't agree. Looking at the systemic corruption of the US political system, I think it's fairly obvious getting corporate money out of politics will have a significant effect on how the country is run. No one is saying it's a cure-all, no one thinks all political corruption will disappear, but if corporations like Goldman Sachs can't buy politicians, or employ them after a very friendly career, of course we've fixed something important.

I'm not saying it's not a good change, I'm saying it won't stop Goldman Sachs from buying your politicians. You just won't know about it because they'll also have to pay to cover it up.

@Sylinic You heard wrong, Ron's all for removing federal power to the states. BUT if a state decided to turn into a mini-fascist state, hey, that's up to the states, and there should be no recourse in the Federal system
JasonCrowell 2 months ago
@JasonCrowell Well he'd give the power to the states because that's what the constitution dictated, but he personally is vehemently opposed to it, and we both know you're not being rational and that won't / can't happen.
But enjoy your fallacy and voting for a blue warmonger who will fuck you in the ass for another four years.
Sylinic 2 months ago
@Sylinic Who's being irrational? He'd give the power to the states, and then if they chose to become a fascist state, they could. He may be for personal rights, however, he's opposed to having a recourse to the Federal government if the State violates your rights. The Ron Paul theory of interpreting the Constitution more resembles the failed Articles of Confederation
This is why some white nationalist and xtian dominionists have latched on to Ron, to let them take control of states
JasonCrowell 2 months ago
@JasonCrowell (I do not, however, think he would be able to succeed at returning us to the Articles era, there are too many checks and balances against the devolution of the Federal state)
I'll vote for the "blue warmonger" who doesn't seem too mongerish, vs a guy that would be truly, spectacularly useless
