@lionheartabidh not just paki punjabis, but muhajirs too as sadly, many muslims in india do practice this style of dowry as well. not all do, but many do sadly. for the record my family does not practice this, we follow the shariah, for example, my brother in law paid only 300 rupees for my sister's dowry 22 years ago, but its not uncommon for many brides families among muslims to make huge dowry demands as well, which obviously has nothing to do with alimony.

@xgotfiveonitx of course i dont deny that we had ancestors who were once hindus either. many of those foreign men arrived from far away lands and took up local hindu women as wives and converted them. and while i dont deny that many muslims do practice the dowry system in this manner, many do not, as per muslim custom the groom is supposed to pay the bride's family a dowry as a form of pre-nup alimony. money set aside for her maintaince in case of divorce.

our country should make a rule that if a women gets pregnant then its husband responsible for every care for the mother and child if any thing happens to child or mother the husband should be held responsible for it and a cases should be filed for murder or attempt for murder. i am an Indian and i know that no religion say's that u should kill a child if its a girl where is the old rule the child is the gift of god and if god has given u a girl accept it. killing a child is denying god

This is a case of Domestic Violence. There was severe physical battery and emotional/psychological abuse of a pregnant woman. India has both criminal (498 A) and civil laws against DV (PWDVA 2005).

In the second trimister when the signs of physical abuse and malnutrition were visible the attending gyneacologist should have reported it to the police. A late case can be initiated of neglect and abandonment of spouse and child.
