Three of my best friends in the world, and people in my life I really look up to in life are gay. I love them so much. Asking students to put themselves in others shoes is a common tool utilized by both educators and parents to teach their children empathy.The only difference between what these educators are doing and what is usually done is they are teaching the children to be empathetic towards ALL people, even homosexuals.

Clearly they aren't too young because when asked about the issues many of the children already have some fairly accurate ideas about what it means to be homosexual. "Being gay" can be explained in terms of love and relationships without mentioning the ideas of sex at all. So you can explain it to them whatever is age appropriate.

The educators simply talk about the issues. ASKING not TELLING the children how they feel about gays, what they know, etc. They also ASK them to put themselves in the homosexual's shoes and think of how they must feel. BUT MOST OF ALL fostering ideas of tolerance and understanding. We should be integrating positive gay role models in the curriculum, as well as being positive role models and no longer turning a blind eye to bullying related to homosexuality! Gays and lesbians should be afforded with the same rights as any other human beings but they will NOT be as long as the topic is avoided and the cycle of intolerance continues to be perpetuated.

Every individual who is involved in education needs to see these videos. Homosexuality is a topic that largely gets overlooked in public schools. By doing so, we are doing our students a disservice. Teaching children about homosexuality is about them being provided with the CORRECT information such as what homosexuality really is (not necessarily in terms of sex, but in terms of relationships and love), which terms that are incorrect and offensive, and dispelling the myths and stereotypes.
