  • that's good stuff right there!!!

  • Amazing take on Jerusalem Ridge. What a powerful sounding instrument!

  • Points taken, and I appreciate the corrections. I did think it was yours and didn't take into account your "enthusiasm" in strumming away. I always say the right hand is the one that controls your expression - the left just holds strings down.

I've shopped around a lot before buying my current equipment primarily because there is a severe overpricing of vintage instruments that aren't properly cared for. Shame on the dealers for treating instruments so poorly.

  • @slappappy1 In this case, the dealers know how to handle vintage instruments. In fact they had some repair done to this mandola shortly after acquiring it. Check out my other uploads, as I do have another video of this mandola on a calmer, sweeter sounding tune Our Great Savior. I recently bought a Flatiron Bouzouki, so I'll try to get some videos posted of it. It has a great resonant deep sound. Thanks.

  • OK, you probably spent a few grand on this really nice instrument, but I hear strings buzzing across the frets, which means the action is too low. I'd invest a few more on getting that fixed because it's really coming across as a bad sound. For the record I own a Trinity College mandola (paid probably a tenth of what yours is worth) but the action is correct and you can hear more resonance than string buzz on it.

The song is well executed, though. Congratulations!

  • @slappappy1 Thanks for the comment and insight. If you'll notice from the credits and description, I did not own this mandola, but borrowed it from a local guitar store. They have since sold it. But you are right in saying it probably could have used some attention as to setup. But then again, some of the buzzing is due to the way I aggressively played it. The instrument really has a nice deep, mellow, resonant tone. Thanks for enjoying my videos.

  • Wow! Just wow. Man oh man. That's got it.

  • Great style - chopy and rockin, thanks for sharing!

  • Very fucking great!!

I take off my hat for you!!

    Nice job!

    Keep Rocking!!

  • Sounds pretty awesome. I'm just starting to learn mandolin. Maybe someday I'll be that good. That mandola is sweet looking.

  • Thanks! Could be a combination of things. I used a digital camera with built in mic. This was shot in a bathroom and the mandola is really resonant, with a full woody sound. It really puts out the volume. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

  • The fuzz off the microphone (or is it my shit speakers?) really sounds great when you whack the strings. Beautiful instrument and really well played aye

  • You inspired me to give this a go on the mandola!

  • Hey, that was excellent. When they made this mandola back in the '20s they could hardly imagine you'd be playing this kind of music on it, could they? Sounds great, though!

  • Awesome, man. Lotta feeling and a great sounding instrument.

  • Oh man you do a GREAT job with JR! That mandola has a fine sound and somehow with it you seem to capture the feeling Monroe and Baker intended in this tune -- one so the best versions I've heard! (IMO)

  • great playing...sounds nice. I have a vintage as well, love it!

  • Very cool! That thing has a great sound. Are you selling it?
