@13thfloor18 Yes, he doesn't give rave reviews to many musicians-- one compliment from Pete is worth a convention of music critics giving a standing ovation!
The Kinks were a legendary band .. right up there, & not far at all behind The Beatles in terms of exposure & popularity. As a music talent & a singer / song-writer .. I personally rank Ray Davies at least as good as Lennon / McCartney. At least. He really had the gift. These commentators are correct about "Waterloo Sunset".. I can't figure out why it took so damn long to put em in the Hall of Fame .. way too late in coming ..
@colindominy I think that Pete and Ray outdo the Beatles in terms of their musical compositions. Not to disparage the Beatles, but the sheer guts, grittiness, and thundering output from the Kinks and the Who is, IMO, unsurpassed by anyone. I think Ray has written over 500 songs!!!
@alabhaois : Pete and Ray are great. Not better than The Beatles. The Beatles created, changed and innovated so much in the space of 7 years. The Kinks have made music from 64-90s and their work from 1971-onwards is mostly awful. The only good Kinks album I can think off is VGPS, which itself has it's lows, maybe Face to Face as well. The Beatles have Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper and the White Album which all trump VGPS.
@PredatorFilmsInc : Nonsense. For starters, Lola Versus Powerman & the Money-Go-Round is utterly brilliant (Lola, Apeman, Top of the Pops, Strangers, Rats, Powerman).. honestly? Do u have ears & any sensibility? Muswell Hillbillies is also, perhaps the absolute PEAK of Ray's songwriting. And while there are inconsistencies, albums like Misfits & Showbiz also have amazong moments and are must owns. Low Budget is a good record. There are bits of genius on even the Preservations & Schoolboys.
@mdaltonwhite : Arthur is also a great album, dunno why I didn't put that on my comment all those months ago haha, Lola is a good album, but it came out 1970, I said the band were pretty crap from 1971 onwards, despite having moments of genius here and there, one of the best songs they produced in post-71 was actually a Dave Davies number called Living on a Thin Line
There never was a band better than them, and there never will be..same for Ray as a songwriter, he was my hero and to this day still is, and always will be.
I think it's great that Ray and Pete inducted one another into the UK Rock Hall of fame. The Beatles may have opened the door, but the Kinks and The Who kicked it down, and gave it attitude!
I loved The Kinks since I was a kid, and collected and knew all of their albums/songs by age 15 - their influence on rock is immeasurable - in pop, punk, metal and rock genres, including the popular indie music of today. Recommend most their albums from 60s and early/late 70s, 80s - masterpieces. More influential than Beatles because they were together for 35 years and You Really Got Me was the first real "rock" song ever. Also "Waterloo Sunset" is best pop song ever
One of the true blessings of being born in England in 1960 was being able to grow up, from a VERY early age, listening to the Kinks.... For that alone, I can live with the wrinkles, the greying hair, the aches and pains... I grew up listening to, and LOVING, the Kinks.... Thank you God! - Thank you Dave and Ray Davies! - God Bless the Kinks.
I don't really know their history, but indeed, she and her band did perform "Waterloo Sunset" at the induction ceremony, and it was beautiful. Cameras showed Ray looking delighted in the audience.
I'm a huge Kinks fan from their first album... I remember when I first heard Celluloid Heroes and couldn't believe it...as well as where I was when I heard the rest but I excitedly took my wife and brother to a Kinks concert in NYC and Ray was drunk and sung in a slurred voice, showed his ass and we ended up leaving halfway into the disappointing show. Still love their CDs.
The KinKs are second to none...my favorite band of all time from day one in 1964 right until the end in 1996..and the solo careers of Ray and Dave too. God save the KinKs, Ray Davies, Dave and ll their fans that have supported them through the years, through the highs and lows, - I remain the Dan the Fan.
kinks fans are the best - so passionate, but how can you not be ? better than the beatles by a mile thats my opinion anyway, they make me wish i was around in the 60's
I have read a lot of British music magazines, bemoan the fact that America left the Kinks behind after the musical union ban. (specifically MOJO, in all its delusion) But, the truth is anything but. While there were always the early stuff, songs like Victoria, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, See My Friend, Sunny Afternoon, were all big hits. In my secondary school, if you couldn't sing "Destroyer," all the way through, you weren't cool. Look at Pixies, Pretenders and even Van Halen as proof.
This makes me want to get a British passport. I'm American, but I've loved British bands my whole life without even thinking about why that was so. Documentaries like this help me understand it better.
@jennyconn1 I have always loved the Brits as well-- what IS it about their music that catches the ear and wont let go? The Kinks are phenomenal and deserve all the accolades... GSTK!!
The Kinks, greatest historically English. narrative-writing band. I mean, I'm American, and I can just close my eyes and wish I were somewhere in their songs!!
I still remember hearing the Kinks for the first time, when 'You Really Got Me' got airplay. Noone else had ever sounded like that and it was something that just made you stop and listen. This was during the heyday of the 'British Invasion' but even then they were a cut above, very raw and completely original. Ray Davies is also one of the funniest people you'll ever see. His Storybook concerts are full of anecdotes about the 60's. Yep, they were/are great!
The true originals and we can thank Dave for starting the harder style of rock with You Really Got Me. When that song was released, rock music changed forever. God Save the KinKs!
abyss908, thank you very very much for that, fuckin loved it. To here Pete Townsend waxing lyrical about Rays genius as a songwritercand Dave's innovation as a guitarist made my day!
I love how Townshend sees rock and roll, really sees it for the art that it is.

Really, Chrissie Hynde performed at a ceremony honoring the Kinks. I thought she and Ray had a big falling out after their child was born.

Mmm, the Kinks were far better than the Beatles [though the Beatles are still in my top five]
Unfortunately, the Beatles were commercial and much more marketable.
Paul and John were great, but there's nothing quite like Ray.

Ray Davies took british rock n' roll..and roughed it up...gave it some balls.
Yet his ballads and softer pop have influenced every songwriter since.
As for staying true to himself as an artist and no selling out..he's up there with Neil Young!
As for reflecting his English culture..he's up there with Bob dylan!
Maybe the inventer of power-chord rock and distorsion. he intentional played with a busted speaker, fuzz was not yet invented!
I first saw these guys on Ed Sullivan and Shindig.
