Budgie is the original 3 piece band with the bassist as the lead singer, Rush was the clone. Budgie was robbed by disco music. Metallica, Iron Maiden Van Halen etc covered Budgie songs... They never covered Rush songs. Get it right. Metallica got started playing Budgie covers.
@celticwitan just gotta say, saw budgie in the 70s with judas preist at bolton tec. wat a night, tony bourge doin "parents" is somat ill never forget. also kk downing throwin his V up in the air, just as the lights went out!! he didn't catch it. hit the stage with a wollop!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this band but the kinda seem to me like when you went to the chevy dealer in 1969 and you couldnt afford the SS Camero with the big block (Rush) and you had to buy the stripped down version with the slant 6 (Budgie). Its like Rush but without the horse power. None the less i like them alot
@SuperMrMalibog This bands first three albums were before Rush's debut in 1974... I seriously get sick and tired of people calling Budgie a rush clone when they predate rush! Jesus Christ, just because Budgie isn't in guitar hero or some shit doesn't mean they are not creadable. I am more then positive that Geddy Lee and the gang were paying close attention to what Budgie was doing....
@DoomMetalSludge Hold the phone there Sparky. I never called them a Rush clone. I called them a stripped down version of the great Rush. Also i never said they were NOT creadable. and once again I like them a bit myself.
@DoomMetalSludge Ow boy... First Rush formed in 1968 and put out a couple of singles before touring in 1974. Rush went on to be the mega band they are today. Why? cause they are Rush... the real deal. Budgie is a good band. I would say they were somewhat original sounding BUT they didint have the creativity and chops of the power trio. I never said they were a Rush clone. Get over it. They lack the true talent of a big time band.
@SuperMrMalibog "A couple of singles before 1974".... This is completely wrong. Budgie had three legitimate albums out before 1974. The self titled debut, Squawk, and Never Turn Your Back On a Friend. They definatly WERE touring before 1974.
I agree in general but this live version sounds awful (notwithstanding) video quality. The guitarist does a very poor song of the first solo in particular, which is when I had to turn off. Compared to the studio version this version isn't worth wiping my cock with. I think the image of the band is also very suspect. If this isn't the original guitarist why didn't they get someone in with hair who didn't look like the fat cunt that props up every boozer in England. Not impressed!
I have always loved this band and am thrilled to see them again. I saw this line-up at Lincoln Drill hall many years ago and although Burke was a bit of a knob on the mic they rocked and i will never forget that night,.
Tony Bourge does French polishing now and furniture restoring. He's retired from music.I remember back in the day when him and Ray phillips Had a band Called Tredegar
man i saw budgie in Sydney in 2008 and it was a great gig but i have to admit this is better than craig goldys work on the night , nothing personal .... hes a bloody good guitarist , but i like this better
I just wanted to point out that your wrong about some things toxicpizza. John Thomas din't die. He is still alive. Also Simon Lees didn't play on the Live In San Antonio record which was recorded in 2002. The guitarist who played on that record was Andy Hart. Simon Lees joined the band in 2003.
on the clip it`s the earlier George Hatcher guitarist "Big" John Thomas (Budgie 1979-2001,read that he died later..The original riff-shreding guitarist was Tony Bourge who got tired and left the band.(1968-1978),Tony was often seen playing on Gibson ES-335,345 & SG`s..After John Thomas left in 2001 Simon Lees took over, listen to the "Live in San Antonio" record,he`s a totally awesome guitarplayer, but left july 2007 because busy with guitarstudents..Craig Goldy from Dio is in at the moment!
Top notch. JT... go boy go! Good to see the old white boots again... and Burke with short locks! Seriously though folks, this is prime Budgie... shows what we're missing these days (no disrespect Mr Lees and Mr Goldie).

@SuperMrMalibog How can Budgie be a stripped down version of Rush when they were before them? Rush is clearly a stripped down version of Budgie!

Does he have to conform to your narrow minded image of a rock musician?
Get real.
Budgie produced some of the best heavy rock of the 1970's'
Now go off and watch Bon Jovi videos, he's a real rock musician isn't he?
