  • Wow, this is just days after I was born. Pretty cool to see the styles people were wearing and tv alone from the actual week of my birth.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • That was a great announcing crew; By Saam, Ashburn and Harry Calas.

  • Great stuff. This one is particularly interesting to me as being a four year old in1975 this was in essence the last year that occurred prior to the Phillies entering my consciousness. I have vague remembrances of the 1976 team and my earliest memories of the team involve my family agonizing over Greg Luzinski and Gary Maddox mishandling those fly balls against the Dodgers in the 1977 and 78 playoffs respectively. Harry's voice here had a strange sense of optimism about the coming 76 season. hmm

  • I was in grade school in the 70's. Hearing Harry's voice on the radio and tv meant summer vacation was right around the corner... great memories! Very sad that is he gone... he died WAY too young!

  • I know for a fact that AMC sponsored the Phillies in 1975, I was hoping to see AMC mentioned with the other sponsors towards the end of this clip, or maybe see an AMC commercial as part of the clip.... I have a "Phillies '75" bumper sticker with the AMC logo and the theme "Set the Pace" written on it... cool clip

  • This takes me wayyyyyy back!!!

  • Thanks for uploading this video. Sure is Classic and appreciated.

  • This rules. Do you have any clips from this game?

  • CLASSIC! Nice upload!

  • I love this. Just love it.

  • The Phils "next year" would be them winning the NL East!! They finished 2nd in '75 to Pittsburgh

  • It's weird for me to hear him so young. I didn't start watching the Phillies on a regular basis until about 02 or 03. Wow, ithe show was weird back then lol.

  • i would love to get a hold of more videos of this time period of the phillies if anyone knows how to get them.

  • This is an awesome upload! From the long lost days where every team had an over the air network instead of all games on cable! I may be a Mariner fan, but my top 5 great baseball announcers of my generation are:

    1. Harry Kalas

    2. Vin Scully

    3. Dave Niehaus

    4. Harry Caray

    5. Ernie Harwell

Harry was the best at baseball and as the "Voice of the Fan" for all those NFL Films highlights!

  • @markofly76 You are dead on with Kalas. He had the "IT" factor. That voice was and still is timeless. Man I miss his broadcasting...

  • The Phils were on the upswing when this aired; they were only a year removed from winning the first of three consecutive NL East Division titles in the late 70s. And those sponsors - Girard Bank, Schmidt's Beer - what blasts from the past. Thanks for posting!

  • I miss Harry Kalas, and I'm a Cardinals' fan.

  • I was a Pirate fan at that time. That was their last division title in a run of 5 out of 6 years. After that, it was 8 years in a row of second place (or a little worse) with one world series in the middle. We now are on our 18th losing season in a row and 24 out of 27 years of noncontention. Thank you Marvin Miller. Mission accomplished.

  • This was also By Saam's last game as well, I do believe. Let's not forget about him. Andy Musser came onto the scene in 1976. Andy always got a bad rap. I didn't realize how good Andy Musser was until he was gone. Andy Musser just gave you the information that you needed on a loop. You don't always get that from these guys today due to the nonstop blathering. At least on the TV side.

  • god luv ya harry!

  • This clip is priceless. Man, I was 3 yrs old in 1975. Anyway, Harry sure looked fly in that leisure suit. I'm sure they will honor him in some way when the season starts.

  • Thank you so much for this! :) The next year the Phillies went on a 3 year run of consecutive division titles. They showed a lot of growth in 1975 from 1974 and going into 1976 they were contenders. People always talk about how great the Big Red Machine was and that's true, but the Phillies had 1 less win than the Reds that year. That Philadelphia team of the late 1970s was great and Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn were along for the ride and what a great ride it was!

  • RIP Hary Kalas,we miss you so very much!

  • I love this. I was a huge Pirates fan as a 16-year-old in 1975. The Phils were always the big rivals. I listened to Kalas, Ashburn and Saam, as well as my Bob Prince and Nellie King. Free agency ruined small-market teams like the Pirates. I quit going in the early 90s, because after that point, the best players always went to the highest bidder. The Pirates are now a farm team supplying good players for other teams. But I loved baseball then. Thanks for bringing 1975 back again!

  • the 70's were great times for the small market teams the oakland a's from 72-74 winning the world series the rise of the kc royals the cincinnati reds and the pirates

  • I love old stuff like this. RIP HARRY AND WHITEY. Thank you to whoever found this. awesome! Remember this one - 'if it's Franks, nice..' Think it was a soda commercial. Dementia setting in... ha. only 41

  • I once owned a 1974 Frank's soda machine (my boss gave it to me when I worked in a gas station in the 1980s).

I definitely remember their slogan, "Is it Frank's? Thanks!"

    That Choice-Vend CVC-180 became a back-yard beer machine!

Drop 75 cents into it (that's the highest it could be set) and you could get a Miller, a Bud, a Genny Cream Ale, a Pabst or a Yuengling (before they became a big brewer).

Coors cans were odd-sized and wouldn't fit.

It went to a NJ shore house in 2006 when I moved.

  • Oops - my beer machine was a CVC-168!

  • Genny Cream Ale!!! Wow. I haven't heard about that beer in over 25 yrs. Is it still on the market? Also, I miss spoke... you were right, "Is it Frank's? Thanks!" That machine sounds awesome. I miss the good ol' days when you can watch a commercial and it actually meant something. Not this crap of today... Constant health commercials about who can't breathe, can't s***t, can't get it up, etc. It's disgusting.

What happened to the good old cereal, coffee, etc commercials???

  • Genny's still around. I agree with you about all the drug ads that infest TV today.

Could it be because of commercials like "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should"?? ;-)

An old chestnut of a local commercial is back after about 20 years - Jimmie's Auto Parts.

Ideal Clothing of Hammonton, NJ is thinking about bringing back their "Take the wheel of your automobile" commercials.

  • "If you've got a passion for fashion, and you've got a craving for saving, take the wheel of your automobile, and swing on down to Ideal."

HA! Classic. That is as good as "Ancient Chinese Secret!"

And let's not forget - "TWO ALL BEEF PATTIES, SPECIAL SAUCE, LETTUCE, CHEESE, PICKLES, ONION, ON A SESAME SEED BUN"

I remember when BK had a contest and if you could say it right, you got a free burger. Of course when I did it, the contest was over. I was devastated. I think I was 8 yrs old.

  • That was a Big Mac commercial!

  • Boy, I keep getting it wrong. lol. I thought BK was the one who had sesame seed buns???

  • Girard BankAmericard? That brings back memories!

BankAmericard is now known as Visa.

Girard was swallowed up by Mellon Bank, which in turn was swallowed up by Citizens Bank. Its headquarters still stands at Broad & Chestnut.

Rest in peace, Harry & Whitey!!

  • The "True Grit" theme was a great theme for Phillies baseball.

  • R.I.P. Harry, the Phillies and NFL Films will miss ya!!

  • where on earth did you get these old channel 17 clips Rollo?...did they even have VCR's in 1975? Regardless, thank you for your posts. They're great!

  • As I mentioned in the blurb, this clip (and the other one from 1980) were on YouTube previously. I wish I remembered who uploaded them first so I can give credit. I don't think that person is on YT anymore.

BTW, I'm not from the Delaware Valley, and I wasn't even born in 1975. I'm just a baseball fan who understands the connection a team and its fans have to their announcers.

  • I am the original uploader of the video - "DCPlus" - now known as "Retrodan5". I also uploaded game 5 of the '80 NLCS from Oct 12,1980. I was kicked out of You Tube for these clips and any thing else MLB and NFL related, but somehow they continue to exist under other accounts. Doesn't seem right.

  • I had a similar issue with some NY Mets stuff I once uploaded, and MLB claimed copyright and the clips got pulled. The two you put up shouldn't ba problems because there is no game action on either.

I'll give you the proper credit. However, if you wish for both of the clips to be taken down, just let me know. Otherwise, I'll keep them up.
