Somehow... I dont believe Henry actually loved Jane. After Anne ... he just looked at Jane, and saw her kindness and her good heart.. and thought to him self, that she was exactly what he needed.
@The13blooddiamond Anne was pregnant when Henry married her. She was beheaded when Elizabeth was about 2 years old. If Jane had lived, Henry would've done anything for her because she gave him a son. She would've given him more sons.
I think Henry was really in love with his first wife, Catherine. She couldn't produce any sons, she was old, and probably "displeasing"(to him) and she knew about his Mistress'. AND he didn't kill her.
But I do think, that he was in love with Jane, but only because she gave him a son. The other's were just to keep him busy and give him more sons..

@raumarcel Well, I still think Anne was the greatest queen of all. You almost sound like Henry himself when you say that the most important thing is dat she gave him a son.
@raumarcel Anne's daughter went on to be the most successful monarch of English history. Jane's son went on to...pretty much do nothing and die. So the fact that her child happened to have a penis really didn't turn out to be the most important thing ever.
Not that I don't like Anne of Cleves or Catherine Parr, but I wish Jane hadn't died so young! One can only wonder at the course history would have taken had the only woman who gave Henry VIII everything he ever wanted lived.
I always feel bad about all the hate Jane gets because it's not her fault that Henry turned on Anne. I think she was a sweet girl that got pushed into a relationship with Henry because of an overly ambitious family.
I really love this scene, its so lovely and really shows the affection and love they have for one another. I really think, he truly loved Jane, although giving birth to a son may have helped, but he still had alot of love for her before she was pregnant.
I agree that I miss Natalie but I'm so glad that Anita got replaced I really hated her but Annabelle just has that kindness about her that you can imagine Jane having
Yuck! I am sorry but this is such a lie, which makes it worse. He acts so happy that she is pregnant, claims he is in love with her, but he is having sex with someone she has to spend everyday with. COME ON, this guy is horrible. This clip would have been cute and lovely if Henry wasn't such an .... well you know. I am glad he die fat and ugly and is only know for being a horrible human being.
Its not that they didnt care he was married, some of those women didn't have a choice, I mean think about it, he's the King, his word is law, if you displeased him your head is chopped, so the women were afraid to say no to the king. most of them, the others, yeah they wanted to be with him.
You seem to forget that women did not have any rights the only way for them, was to marry into a family who have money and power, so marrying the king was good for her but also for her family.
@biaco92 You would have no choice. Your live wasn't your own back then.
You were at the mercy of your family, and they decided your future. If the King took an interest in you, it meant position and prosperity for the whole family. You would not be in any position to refuse.
@forgottennunknowen: LOL---King Henry chops off Anne Boleyn's head...not Jane Seymour's (this is Jane). Jane will instead die something like 12 days after childbirth. :)
I love Ann Boleyn but ~sniffle~ This is a beautiful scene! It truly portrays Henry not as a cruel montser but of a tender man truly in love. I love Jane Seymour. She was so kind..... and sweet
I find it rather ironic that his precious son didn't live that long + do much during his rein, and is 'useless' daughter Elizabeth ruled for what, 40 years? And was one of the best monarchs... Yup, oh the irony.
sorry, shouldve said that Henry was not strong enough to defeat the rebellion, and couldnt trust the southern nobles to not join them thus he coudlve been overthrown, not that he wasnt strong enough to defeat the southern nobels LOL , sorry was fiddling with words to try to get it all in and deleated some by mistake - anyway the rest is as it should be.
.. would keep his pledges to them - but he , for someone so called besotted with her, then BETRAYED HER First he cancelled the coronation, then her tour, and then he killed its leaders and spiked thier heads - nice fellow and not as tender as the clip portrays - afer all, if he cared one jot for the mother of his much wanted unborn son, then he wouldve kept his word - yep, think thats it, - so yes he was happy, and yet not quite happy enough to keep his word to her - mmmm enough said
Yeas. I believe it was henry who promised the pple of the rebellion that JAne would be crowned queen in the North, right? He didnt give JAne a coronation. I think he wanted to wait and see if she was going to have a son. You are absolutely right!
yes, I think that was one reason, but after having watched that History doc on her and Henry, it also states that he cancelled it because of the troubles. It really was the most serious crisis of his riegn, and although it stayed North, apparently according to historians, he was most worried that if it came south, that he wouldnt be able to rely on the loyalty of his nobles in the south, and hence the threat to him was very real indeed.
Starkey puts it as "betrayal", ever the drama queen! But in reality is was b/c Jane had become pregnant, Henry wasn't about to parade Jane around when she was pregnant of all things. That's why he cancelled her coronation and tour. However, had she survived long after Edward's birth, you can bet she would've had the most grandiose coronation ever given to a Queen Consort. In fact before her pregnancy he had been planning an elaborate coronation for her.
Perhaps, but its one thing that we shall never know - I do understand from various things that Henry had no real intention of having her crowned until after he had gotten what he wanted from her, but these were perilous times, and Henry prone to changing his mind and his mood at the drop of a hat, He was allegedly reported to have recieved the news of Jane's death with some indifference .However, every historian will state the facts as they interpret them, which will vary from person to person
It has been theorized that Henry wasn't going to coronate Jane until she had given him a son, but pertaining to actual History it is an assumption with no basis, a simple observation that has been twisted into "fact".
Also, Henry was anything but indifferent to Jane's death, every Historian can tell you that, they may not like to admit, but Henry fell into depression, began to overeat, wore black constantly, and had to be pushed into remarrying.
Yes, he may have done so, but to be honest, he wasnt about to publically not show his grief, He probably did miss her, sure he did, and dont forget Henry loved attention, so there wouldve been a little of that too- he was very self seeking and re the over eating, well as the portriats of the time show, he was already on the very large side before he married Jane, he was not the handsome young man the series shows, in reality he was a fat old man with a leg that smelt from the infection .
me too LOL its nice to hear other views and opinions - and the fact that we dont always agree, well that just makes it all the more interesting - vive le difference as they say LOL
Okay, so, as a final remark to add, if Mr Filbofox is still reading here, I have seen on Youtube David Starkey on Jane Seymour - 2/2 - Now it does mention tht Henry was overjoyed at her pregnancy BUT BUT BUT, it also mentions tht as i pointed out he coudlnt trust his nobles in the south during the rebellion, and was NOT strong enough to defeat them, so he used their love of the Queen to get them to stand down and avert the GREATEST crisis of his reign and he also promised the Queen he would ....
Have done some revision - and a little more research, and have concluded, that whilst i do accept that Henry was happy when Jane found she was pregnant - I still feel that the acting was over the top - for my liking - and of course my view in that respect is coloured by experience - aswell as other things as already stated as for the rest, I can't find anything that says exactly what Henry did or felt re the news- have looked thruugh various articles perhaps you could tell me your sources ?

I cannot beleive how mushy this is. . "My Love" "My Queen" ...My Stomach - seriously over the top, What ,a load of rubbish - most blokes are dumbstruck , regardless as to whether or not its a expected - and personal experience has been one where mild indifference was the response - didnt stop me smiling to myself though.
And of course you are familiar with the Tudor ways of life and have lived in Tudor times so know exactly what their reactions would be...
Henry VIII was a king, his goal was to get a son and heir to the throne and news of this kind would have been fantastic for him, so much so that he would show even greater affection towards his queen... exactly as was shown here.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If I did live in Tudor times, then I am looking very very well for my age !! LOL Seriously, whilst I dont doubt that Henry was delighted, given that he was supposed to be less than virile at this time, I just think that this is a little over the top, You said it yourself, he was a King and the higher up the ranks you went, the less seemly it was to show to much emotion. but, maybe my view is coloured by my own personal experiences, more than 3 times , am a mum of a few, so know its not like this
But that is my point, you have absolutely no idea what it would have been like for Henry VIII... and basing your opinion on your 21st Century experiences really isn't much of a comparison.
As for him being a king, the news of his queen being pregnant would be the best thing he'd have heard in a LONG time so it is quite possible he'd have reacted like this.
And again, what your experiences of men have to do with the Tudors I really have no idea... people are completely different these days.
Not of men of life and a good few years of it. Point is, it is over the top. Catherine of Aragonhad many miscarriages and stillbirths or babes who didnt live long - so did they portray Anne Boleyn's pregnancy the same ? No, and yet Henry turned his country on its head because of it. Incidently - were you there too ? so you dont know that it was like this, not one bit, anymore than I know it was not - so there you go - neither of us knows one way or the other .and we never will.
They may not have portrayed Anne Boleyn's pregnancies in the same way, but then they had a LOT more to focus on in her time than with Jane Seymour's... and as you even said, the fact that Henry made such a big deal out of Jane's pregnancy around the country with special boats being made for her coronation and wine for all being handed out, would back up the idea that he was overjoyed at the fact she was pregnant and therefore this portrayal of the scene, which really wasn't that over the top.
As for me not being there, well that is a ridiculous statement in itself. I never claimed to be and I was merely commenting on how you seemed to be passing judgement on what you think might have happened based on your life experiences which, excuse me for sounding rude, is rather naive if you think that your life has any resemblance to a Tudor kings...
I am, and will continue, to merely point out widely accpeted theories and accounts of how the events unfolded. Theories which contradict yours.
I was not comparing my life to that of a tudor kings - do you honestly take the time to read anything or do you simply skim through stuff and just pick out what you what , and then put your own spin on it ? - and they are not widley held theories at all - I have done my reasearch - have you ? I have a university qualification in the field of social sciences - and what i say is also based on my studies in social developlment over the centruaries so please, dont insult my intelligence -
"... most blokes are dumbstruck , regardless as to whether or not its a expected - and personal experience has been one where mild indifference was the response..."
"... maybe my view is coloured by my own personal experiences, more than 3 times , am a mum of a few, so know its not like this..."
And you still say you're not comparing your experiences with this event in a Tudor kings lifetime... hmm...
Yes, why do you think he had all those plans, and the free wine etic? Because he was trying to keep the masses from rising up against him there was at this time the rebellion going on in the North and they were marching south and growing in numbers - Henry was terrified - as any tyrant would be of loosing power, so, to justify him breaking his promises for a parliament and pardon for those involved (he treated themappallingly) he used this to subdue the rising tide of discontent. a distraction
As for this 'research' you are supposed to have done, you clearly haven't done nearly enough then have you. Social sciences means absolutely nothing here as you cannot be sure of how people acted then and it is more down to pure historical evidence and facts to build a picture of how things took place. Hence where I come in with my widely accepted theories.
Historians and documentaries have even gone over Henry VIII hundreds of times and probably all claiming his joy at the news of the child...
Well if you had any knowledge of the area of Social Sceinces, then you would not make such an ingnorant remark - you really dont have a clue do you? social sciences is the study of not just society as it is, but also as it was, the whys the wherefores and how all these things have a bearing on things past present and indeed the fuuture - How do you think we got to be as we are ? Have you any concept why you yourself choose the identity you do - reflected by your comments here ? - think about it
As for this remark, I am perfectly well aware of what social sciences are thank you, but I fail to see how you can drag that into this debate. Yes, you may have studied societies of the past but they aren't based on anything other than theories or documented historical facts, hence why I was saying that it was more likely that this drama and the historians that have said that Henry was overjoyed are correct over your theory that he wasn't in fact as pleased as this show makes out...
It is relevent simply because in order to understand how we view things today, or our perceptions of how things may have been, we need to understand, a society's culture, economics, stretched social relations, politics, history of knowledge - etc and of course historians would document this even as being joytful to Henry, He was always aware that history would take account of what was written of him. - I just think this scene is over the top - is all i am saying - am entitled to my views too
and i have already stated that Henry was probably delighted at the news of the child, my argument was that I thought that was a little over the top and i did indeed draw upon my own experiences and studies too to pass comment -it appears that you and I will not see eye to eye on this, but that doesnt mean than either of us is wrong or right------- and so we go round again
And as for your historial knowledge, it seems rather lacking too.
Henry was most likely not at all 'terrified' as you put it considering the rebellion, by the time he was making those plans, was already defeated and those who had taken part were being made an example of, several hundred people being hung. He also only gave out wine to those in London, where no rebellion of the sort was taking place and he was in complete control.
to conclude - Henry held onto his throne through fear - there were many who would bring him down if the rebels managed to march south - he knew that they would gather many more to thier cause - so he exacted a most fearful revenge - he ruled through fear and not good judgement - he even made it treason to think of such things such as reblelling against him - just think, - he made a law to control peoples thoughts - now you dont do that if you are not worried about being overthorown -simple logic
The fact still remains however that in earlier posts you were comparing Henry's reaction to those of YOUR experience in the 21st Century. To make such a comparison is just foolish as the eras bare hardly any similarities whatsoever.
Unless you have carefully studied Henry VIII and his life, you cannot possibly say what his reaction would have been, and all I'm saying is that historians, documentaries and this drama are unlikely to have got it all wrong considering the importance of a son.
yes, however, society has not changed as much as you think. Given what I have studied, as much as things appear to be different , underneath the surface they are not all that different - its complicated and theres not the space to explain here. When people pass comments or views, we do so in relation to our experiences of our own life and our persepctive of that life and of things in general. and you said it yourself "drama" would you watch with such interest if there was no poetic licence ?
Well as you said, it would seem that we will just have to agree to disagree... you can think what you like but you certainly won't convince me about what Henry thought. As for London, he was never under threat of losing that, in fact, the rebellion never made it past the midlands. But fair enough, he did rule through being a tyrant. Does that mean he was scared? Not necessarily... but as you said, agree to disagree. :)
Footnote - all those who rule through fear , do so because thats the only way that they can hold onto thier power - if you look back over history, this is easy to see - And yes Henry was scared - of many things especially the rebellion which didnt reach London BECAUSE of what he did - he knew that it could was very very aware that it could , and he treated it as such - why else did he exact such dreadful revenge and punishements ? to deter anyone else , and thereby hold onto his power-
@falseelasheffect I didnt after a few. it was badly acted, which is why i didnt watch this season - it sucked - badly .lost some of its original spark - it was a complete let down after seasons 1 and 2, and just cos you dont like what i have said, does not give you the right to be rude - dont like it - well then dont read it - "Simples" .
@samsagitarias Don't like it, don't watch it. The thing is, im guessing you are a Anne Boleyn fan, fair enough but just because shes not in it anymore, does not mean it looses its spark. Yeah she brought alot to the show, but everybody knew she was going to be killed in the end, so you kind of have to make do. & yeah i liked series 1 and 2, but you have to follow the story, you can't just miss out a series, unless you have just given up on the whole thing.
@falseelasheffect Thing is , I like the story, am an avid enthusiast of this era in history, have read many factual historical novels aswell as historical novels too - one of my fave authors is Alison Wier - its just that the season seems to have lost momentum - am looking forward to season 4 - hope it picks itself up again - season 3 - it was very wishy washy , and the fact that is was is nothing whatsoever to do with history - not at all, love researching this era

Its not that they didnt care he was married, some of those women didn't have a choice, I mean think about it, he's the King, his word is law, if you displeased him your head is chopped, so the women were afraid to say no to the king. most of them, the others, yeah they wanted to be with him.

He cheated and the women didn't care that he was married...I love this show but ALL of them deserve what they get!

You seem to forget that women did not have any rights the only way for them, was to marry into a family who have money and power, so marrying the king was good for her but also for her family.
SuperNikki1 2 years ago 6
@biaco92 You would have no choice. Your live wasn't your own back then.
You were at the mercy of your family, and they decided your future. If the King took an interest in you, it meant position and prosperity for the whole family. You would not be in any position to refuse.

sorry, shouldve said that Henry was not strong enough to defeat the rebellion, and couldnt trust the southern nobles to not join them thus he coudlve been overthrown, not that he wasnt strong enough to defeat the southern nobels LOL , sorry was fiddling with words to try to get it all in and deleated some by mistake - anyway the rest is as it should be.
samsagitarias 2 years ago
.. would keep his pledges to them - but he , for someone so called besotted with her, then BETRAYED HER First he cancelled the coronation, then her tour, and then he killed its leaders and spiked thier heads - nice fellow and not as tender as the clip portrays - afer all, if he cared one jot for the mother of his much wanted unborn son, then he wouldve kept his word - yep, think thats it, - so yes he was happy, and yet not quite happy enough to keep his word to her - mmmm enough said
samsagitarias 2 years ago 2
I agree. He broke vows to his wives. Think he is going to keep a promise? You are more likely to lose your head waiting. :-D
DuttyGyal718 2 years ago 5
Yeas. I believe it was henry who promised the pple of the rebellion that JAne would be crowned queen in the North, right? He didnt give JAne a coronation. I think he wanted to wait and see if she was going to have a son. You are absolutely right!
DuttyGyal718 2 years ago 2
yes, I think that was one reason, but after having watched that History doc on her and Henry, it also states that he cancelled it because of the troubles.

Perhaps, but its one thing that we shall never know - I do understand from various things that Henry had no real intention of having her crowned until after he had gotten what he wanted from her, but these were perilous times, and Henry prone to changing his mind and his mood at the drop of a hat, He was allegedly reported to have recieved the news of Jane's death with some indifference .However, every historian will state the facts as they interpret them, which will vary from person to person
samsagitarias 2 years ago 2

It has been theorized that Henry wasn't going to coronate Jane until she had given him a son, but pertaining to actual History it is an assumption with no basis, a simple observation that has been twisted into "fact".
Also, Henry was anything but indifferent to Jane's death, every Historian can tell you that, they may not like to admit, but Henry fell into depression, began to overeat, wore black constantly, and had to be pushed into remarrying.

Henry himself said "Divine providence hath mingled my joy with grief of the loss of her who had brought me such happiness."
LNor19 2 years ago
Yes, he may have done so, but to be honest, he wasnt about to publically not show his grief, He probably did miss her, sure he did, and dont forget Henry loved attention, so there wouldve been a little of that too- he was very self seeking and re the over eating, well as the portriats of the time show, he was already on the very large side before he married Jane, he was not the handsome young man the series shows, in reality he was a fat old man with a leg that smelt from the infection .

And of course you are familiar with the Tudor ways of life and have lived in Tudor times so know exactly what their reactions would be...
Henry VIII was a king, his goal was to get a son and heir to the throne and news of this kind would have been fantastic for him, so much so that he would show even greater affection towards his queen... exactly as was shown here.

If I did live in Tudor times, then I am looking very very well for my age !! LOL Seriously, whilst I dont doubt that Henry was delighted, given that he was supposed to be less than virile at this time, I just think that this is a little over the top, You said it yourself, he was a King and the higher up the ranks you went, the less seemly it was to show to much emotion. but, maybe my view is coloured by my own personal experiences, more than 3 times , am a mum of a few, so know its not like this
samsagitarias 2 years ago

Incidently - were you there too ? so you dont know that it was like this, not one bit, anymore than I know it was not - so there you go - neither of us knows one way or the other .and we never will.
samsagitarias 2 years ago
They may not have portrayed Anne Boleyn's pregnancies in the same way, but then they had a LOT more to focus on in her time than with Jane Seymour's... and as you even said, the fact that Henry made such a big deal out of Jane's pregnancy around the country with special boats being made for her coronation and wine for all being handed out, would back up the idea that he was overjoyed at the fact she was pregnant and therefore this portrayal of the scene, which really wasn't that over the top.
FilboFox 2 years ago
As for me not being there, well that is a ridiculous statement in itself. I never claimed to be and I was merely commenting on how you seemed to be passing judgement on what you think might have happened based on your life experiences which, excuse me for sounding rude, is rather naive if you think that your life has any resemblance to a Tudor kings...
I am, and will continue, to merely point out widely accpeted theories and accounts of how the events unfolded. Theories which contradict yours.
FilboFox 2 years ago
I was not comparing my life to that of a tudor kings - do you honestly take the time to read anything or do you simply skim through stuff and just pick out what you what , and then put your own spin on it ? - and they are not widley held theories at all - I have done my reasearch - have you ? I have a university qualification in the field of social sciences - and what i say is also based on my studies in social developlment over the centruaries so please, dont insult my intelligence -
samsagitarias 2 years ago
"... most blokes are dumbstruck , regardless as to whether or not its a expected - and personal experience has been one where mild indifference was the response..."
"... maybe my view is coloured by my own personal experiences, more than 3 times , am a mum of a few, so know its not like this..."
And you still say you're not comparing your experiences with this event in a Tudor kings lifetime... hmm...
FilboFox 2 years ago
Yes, why do you think he had all those plans, and the free wine etic? Because he was trying to keep the masses from rising up against him there was at this time the rebellion going on in the North and they were marching south and growing in numbers - Henry was terrified - as any tyrant would be of loosing power, so, to justify him breaking his promises for a parliament and pardon for those involved (he treated themappallingly) he used this to subdue the rising tide of discontent. a distraction
samsagitarias 2 years ago
As for this 'research' you are supposed to have done, you clearly haven't done nearly enough then have you. Social sciences means absolutely nothing here as you cannot be sure of how people acted then and it is more down to pure historical evidence and facts to build a picture of how things took place. Hence where I come in with my widely accepted theories.
Historians and documentaries have even gone over Henry VIII hundreds of times and probably all claiming his joy at the news of the child...
FilboFox 2 years ago
Well if you had any knowledge of the area of Social Sceinces, then you would not make such an ingnorant remark - you really dont have a clue do you? social sciences is the study of not just society as it is, but also as it was, the whys the wherefores and how all these things have a bearing on things past present and indeed the fuuture - How do you think we got to be as we are ? Have you any concept why you yourself choose the identity you do - reflected by your comments here ? - think about it
samsagitarias 2 years ago

- I just think this scene is over the top - is all i am saying - am entitled to my views too
samsagitarias 2 years ago
and i have already stated that Henry was probably delighted at the news of the child, my argument was that I thought that was a little over the top and i did indeed draw upon my own experiences and studies too to pass comment -it appears that you and I will not see eye to eye on this, but that doesnt mean than either of us is wrong or right------- and so we go round again
samsagitarias 2 years ago
And as for your historial knowledge, it seems rather lacking too.
Henry was most likely not at all 'terrified' as you put it considering the rebellion, by the time he was making those plans, was already defeated and those who had taken part were being made an example of, several hundred people being hung. He also only gave out wine to those in London, where no rebellion of the sort was taking place and he was in complete control.
FilboFox 2 years ago

samsagitarias 2 years ago
to conclude - Henry held onto his throne through fear - there were many who would bring him down if the rebels managed to march south - he knew that they would gather many more to thier cause - so he exacted a most fearful revenge - he ruled through fear and not good judgement - he even made it treason to think of such things such as reblelling against him - just think, - he made a law to control peoples thoughts - now you dont do that if you are not worried about being overthorown -simple logic
samsagitarias 2 years ago
The fact still remains however that in earlier posts you were comparing Henry's reaction to those of YOUR experience in the 21st Century. To make such a comparison is just foolish as the eras bare hardly any similarities whatsoever.
Unless you have carefully studied Henry VIII and his life, you cannot possibly say what his reaction would have been, and all I'm saying is that historians, documentaries and this drama are unlikely to have got it all wrong considering the importance of a son.
FilboFox 2 years ago
yes, however, society has not changed as much as you think. Given what I have studied, as much as things appear to be different , underneath the surface they are not all that different - its complicated and theres not the space to explain here. When people pass comments or views, we do so in relation to our experiences of our own life and our persepctive of that life and of things in general. and you said it yourself "drama" would you watch with such interest if there was no poetic licence ?
samsagitarias 2 years ago
Well as you said, it would seem that we will just have to agree to disagree... you can think what you like but you certainly won't convince me about what Henry thought. As for London, he was never under threat of losing that, in fact, the rebellion never made it past the midlands. But fair enough, he did rule through being a tyrant. Does that mean he was scared? Not necessarily... but as you said, agree to disagree. :)
FilboFox 2 years ago
Footnote - all those who rule through fear , do so because thats the only way that they can hold onto thier power - if you look back over history, this is easy to see - And yes Henry was scared - of many things especially the rebellion which didnt reach London BECAUSE of what he did - he knew that it could was very very aware that it could , and he treated it as such - why else did he exact such dreadful revenge and punishements ? to deter anyone else , and thereby hold onto his power-
