Ermm .. Sorry but the pics were of Earnest Shackleton and the 28 men trapped on Elephant Island which did not leave the u.k. until 3 years after R.F.Scotts ill fated expedition to the South Pole in 1911 . ( 22 men actually, 6 inluding Shackleton navigated 800 miles to South Georgia to seek help)
Thanks for a very thoughtful video. Please have a look at
'SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC. Birdie the doctor and me'
It's a film that I made, using stock footage, to illustrate a song written and performed by my friend Pete HUNT. I would value your comment. If you have any trouble finding it, just enter KCAZYT.
do you think in 100 years people will talk of the astranauts that have died throughout the years as incompetent fools for going somewhere new and unknow being unprepared and ill-equiped. Captain Kirk will turn in his grave - Well if he was born yet!
@mjwquinn Not likely, because the astronauts who died did not die in vain, while Scott's death was avoidable with proper planning and use of the dogs. The lessons learned from the astronaut's deaths will remain. The lesson learned from Scott's death was: Take "dogs, dogs, and more dogs" if you want to run a Polar expedition and survive.
@TheMythOfRescue Amundsen relied on dogs. Scott relied on the historical friends of man, the horse... In normal conditions the horses would have won! Nobody at that time had any idea of the conditions of the Antarctic! Amundsen placed his money on dogs, whilst Scott's money went on horses! Amundsen won the bet! Simples!
@theluthier Normal conditions? The ponies barely even made it to the Beardmore under normal conditions. And for Amundsen, dogs proved to be his best friends. Plenty of others had experience of Antarctic conditions-Shackleton, Sverdrup, and Amundsen on the Belgica expedition, to name a few.
@TheMythOfRescue really! when Amudson first set out he had to return for bad weather immediately, so dogs made no difference, shackletons furthest south used ponies - so we know the only guy going that far with experience used ponies not dogs and where were these dogs proven like everyone keeps saying by amudsons stay in my country? also scottos experience with dogs - read about his first expedition. Then reference exped size, and goals you'll find scotts samples being used in modern science
@mjwquinn The dogs didn't make a difference? Then Amundsen shouldn't have made it out alive. With regards to your Shackleton reference-plenty of others had gone long distances in polar conditions with dogs and done well-Nansen, Sverdrup, and Nordenskiöld, to name a few. Scott didn't do well with dogs because: 1, he didn't know how to handle them, and 2, because he seemed to hate them. Enough has been said about science-namely Scott gets the credit for other's work in this field.
@TheMythOfRescue further more, astronauts didn't die in vain you say then scott did - then you give a lesson learned CONTRADICTION!!!!! should shackleton not have parked his ship there? Should Franklin have left 196 men at home - come on man use your own brain! Why didnt Amudson pack his PLANE full of quote "dogs dogs dogs dogs" he could have rode them out of antartica and SURVIVED!!!!!!!!!!! after all they were the proven method some say not planes oh well lesson learned!
@mjwquinn With the astronauts' fatal accidents, no one knew about the faults on spacecraft until they happened. Scott had seen every problem before, during the Discovery expedition, and did nothing to solve them. Given that he went with contaminated meat and drinking water, Franklin shouldn't have taken so many with him and should have learned from the Inuit. Amundsen, by contrast, with 7 other guys and a dinky 47 GRT second hand fishing boat, succeeded when Franklin failed.
@TheMythOfRescue Like I said Use your own Brain, the dogs comment was quite clearly a reference to scott being stuck during his last days where Amudson would, if he hit that weather, been in the same position. You do not need to quote facts like knowledge because ive seen all the videos and information you have so plagierism is not needed here. My point to you is explorers use there own personal experiences and technology advancement to decide how they conduct their expeditions - not hindsight!
@mjwquinn I am using my brain. If Amundsen had encountered that blizzard that kept Scott in his tent for 2-4 days (as per Solomon), the dogs would have enabled him to keep going. Amundsen was managing 13+ miles per days even in blizzards.
@TheMythOfRescue further more once again, I judge explorers by my own experience of living and working in northern canada with almost a 100 degree temperature change, i know what its like to have frostbite and be stuck in the middle of nowhere! And I say to you that if big oil cant get supply and transportation right today how do you by watching youtube videos and reading wikipedia earn any credibility to criticise early 20th century explorers.
@mjwquinn Where I live, the temperature over the course of a year can vary between 100F and -20F or lower. I've supported Amundsen since childhood. I've done a good deal of research as to Amundsen and Scott. Facts are, Amundsen knew what he was doing, Scott with equivalent experience didn't. To my knowledge, the Scott apologists are exclusively British. I may have found an exception.
@TheMythOfRescue PS scott did identify a problem "the dogs" which is why he didn't take them! and if i was leaving tomorrow id take my new bombardier not my old polaris and if i died id still be happier i left it at home because it really pisses me off! so there human nature
Scott was an incompetent fool. He's responsible for the death of his men. Compare Scott's expedition with Amundsen's (you can find it on wikipedia). And this guy became a hero! Amazing.
@1965Metalhead Actually, scag has a point. To be frank, Scott's planning was a mess. Taking ponies when dogs were proven=facepalm. Motor sledges+not bringing the mechanic who built them=facepalm. Man hauling most of the way with resupply from air not yet in service= massive facepalm.
It's amazing to think that no human stood at the south pole until December 14th, 1911......almost 100 years ago.
That was one of the last conquests of the planet by man, and the beginning of our stagnation. We need a new frontier, we need to go to Mars and beyond.
@theman1819 His decision to "man haul" as opposed to dogs doomed them all. A typical full of himself Englishman he reminds me of another half-wit---Montgomery.
Scott had the gall to blame Oates for slowing down the progress. He is a true asshole. Shame he had to take good men to their deaths.
@oysterjoe You could say that about a certain American leader going to war for oil, the dollar signs in his eyes. "He is a true asshole. Shame he had to take good men to their deaths."
Every member of Scott's expedition was there by choice, and for a noble and brave piece of exploration.
Typical vacuous American. Head out and get youself a doughnut.
@oysterjoe Being as you clearly are, a product of the dumbed-down late 20th century mamby-pamby pinko-liberal-loony-left, I don't suppose you have any idea about what Scott and his expedition went through in their race to the pole, just to have it all dashed when they found that the Norwegian, Amundsen, had beaten them to it by a matter of days!
I hope you are safe, sitting in your comfy 21st century lifestyle & that you never move from it, because it takes REAL men to do what they did!
@theluthier Well, guess what, I'm none of the above. Amundsen beat Scott by 5 weeks, I wouldn't call that merely a matter of days. It also took a real man like Amundsen to reach his goal first and bring all his men back alive.
@oysterjoe Yeah crazy idea man-hauling mind you he never spent time with the inuit on his way through the northwest passage learning the benefits of that. so i guess he's just pretty normal for his day really like most explorers who perished throughout the last thousand years. but you know best unlike him you would of had GPS!
@TheMythOfRescue Scott was an asshole who cared little for his men. Glory was his goal and, thanks to the fact the British are almost all assholes, he attained it.
In America the same phenomenon is at work on the myth of Ronald Reagan, a true traitor and criminal.
Are we any different than the pathetic [and barely human] Russians who re-write history constantly?
@TheMythOfRescue The British love debacles. They're still talking about Dunkirk. It's my opinion that they should concern themselves with the enemy they've imported. The next Dunkirk might be in Dover.
I was raised to hate the Russkies. That has faded to extreme dislike. They're asian in thought and deed.
Scott was an egotist convinced of his own infallability [much life Obama].
I prefer guys like Richard Francis Burton. His journal of his trip to Mecca is fascinating.

Those who have gotten all pissed off at Roland Huntford's expose of Scott can't take the truth. He busted a myth, a big myth. Good for him.
