You know the party game, where one person whispers a phrase to their neighbor, and so on down the line, until it comes around full circle? Religions seem to be like that -- the overlap between the religions and some of the basic stories within them, like the great flood, are astounding.
So who's right? Probably everyone and no one. I just look at what little we do *know* and the gaps in between and feel there's a God. But it is beyond our comprehension, much like asking what color a sound is.
I think I will always believe in God, in some form or another. I've had my doubts, here and there, but I've never lost faith. I think he would be disappointed if we didn't question his existance at least once. Actually, I can't presume to know what God would think or feel about anything, but I hope he would feel that way.
Yes, I think it is like asking what color a sound is. Everyone would have a different answer.
I figure that if he was just concerned with having people obey and worship him, he's more than capable of compelling that -- voices from heaven, plagues or miracles. But I think it means more when we, with free will and no real evidence, come to our own conclusions and choose voluntarily to believe. Even if we end up being wrong about some of the details (and I think we will be!), how we got there and that we got there at all is what I think will matter in the end. Merry Christmas!
Sorry, no design. A cool summer breeze is nice, sure, but oxigen is just gas. It's a poison we learned how to tolerate and use, and now we need it so much and enjoy it so much we call it a miracle. It is gas.
There must be life on other planets (not in our solar system probably) the law of averages says so. If the universe is infinite there are infinite planets. It is inconcievable that only ONE out of infinite planets has life. And all those life forms have their own ideas of god. And we thought the Inquisition was bad - wait till the aliens impose their religion on us hahaha
Yes I'm sure other planets have religions that put ours to shame. I'm sure there are others that are beyond religions. Or maybe something else that we cannot even conceive.
When ever anyone comes out with the nonsense of "there must be a creator, look at the beauty and compexity of..." I cringe. That creator idea is only man's way of trying to put all the awesome comlexity of the universe into one simple conceptof "GOD". No one seems to ask why would god bother? What's in it for "Him"? If god made everything, why did he create evil? If he is all powerful why not clean up the mess and make us all happy? Why in spite of all the praying, is there so much suffering?
Personally, I think that our lives here are one of many we have had elsewhere. I think all our lives add up to a series of tests for our souls. Our lives here on earth are tests of faith and love. How better to test us, than with suffering? I think our souls are on a journey more important than any of us could ever know. I don't cringe at other people's beliefs. I simply agree to disagree. I am happy with my ever evolving thoughts and beliefs. Why should others not be happy with their own?
Sorry, but I don't believe in reincarnation either. That's just a way to deny the brutal fact of death. As for testing us with suffering, if I did that to my grandchildren I would go to jail!! It doesn't make sense. I don't think I have a soul. I don't even know what a soul is! Without going into religious talk, can someone explain to me what a soul is? I understand character, charm, presence, even spirit and aura - but not soul.
I think there is too much universe for ours to be the only planet with life. Who says all our lives have to be limited to a blink of an eye on earth? OMG! I USED TO BE AN ALIEN? WHAT? Ok, I know it probably sounds even more far fetched than the whole God thing. I think all religions have been arrogant in thinking that heaven is humans only. What about all the other countless worlds? So why have just one life on one planet? Seems too boring for an eternal being.
Thanks for all your replies. I've had fun. I subscribed and I hope you will accept my friend invite (but no offence taken if not) I'm off to bed now, good night.
How did I miss this vid? I have some catching up to do!
How's the incredible shrinking Diva? You look great... My diet has been a freakin' yo-yo..But, so long as I keep pluggin' at it.. Your REM vid is dynamite Rachel, I'll have a new music vid real soon, I'm working on an original.
GREAT video Rachel..I'm a Christian, and I definately don't tell others how they should live, or shove my beliefs on them..Live and let live, to each his/her own. My take on it as a Christian is with what the bible says. The 1st book of Genesis, "God created the heavens and the earth" and I agree with you, with all of the beauty and complexities, there must be an "Architect", a designer..Why are we here? Is it all just a big nothing? I don't think so..I believe there's a purpose, and a plan. :)
Einstein once said, "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind". I think that's a good take on the matter.
I don't think I'm on a path to atheism. I believe in God. It's the Bible I've been having problems with. Too many man's hands have tainted it over the years.
My idea is that lots of beings created the universe working together because I find it difficult to believe that one guy could do it all by himself. One guy could paint a picture but to create something like a building or a universe he would need other guys to help.
While I appreciate your intention, your painting analogy is, in my opinion, not an apt one and "accident" sorta misses the mark, too.
Rachel, babe! You have absolutely NO REASON to apologize for having a belief in god - not in my opinion anyway!!! 8‹D I, personally, find NO consolation in the concept of god, heaven, eternity, etc.
The painting analogy was the best way for me to describe how I see the theories of creation, in my mind. God creating the universe, is him painting it, with purpose. Wouldn't it be more miraculous for the paint to be thrown at the canvas, and have it form the painting of the universe on its own? But miraculous isn't a word we can really use in this case. Since the later is without any divine intervention. However it happened, it's pretty amazing. =0)
Creation is the act in which something is created. Weather your using a canvis or not it still is a creation of a something. And then, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What is the question that your looking for the answer too?
Usally i don't answer but you seem to be asking a qestion that is never asked. State you question in a question form.
I'm not looking for an answer from anyone. That is the mistake that everyone is making in my comments section. The question I have asked is not answerable. We all have our own ideas on the answer, but none of us can know for sure. I really just wanted to hear other people's ideas on what they think. I don't want to be told what I should believe, or given list of scientific facts that I already know. I just want to hear ideas, and maybe have SOMEONE admit that they don't have all the answers. lol
You're just tossing a bunch of scientific answers at me, for questions I have not asked.
Instincts are not emotions. We may have evolved into emotional creatures, but why? We could be efficient without emotions. We wouldn't have war, if we were emotionless. Why has the world evolved into what it has?Monkeys kill each other all the time. Sometimes they go as far as cannibalism. It's all about insuring that their genes live on. Who said anything about war anyway?
The questions I have asked cannot be answered by anyone. We can come up with theories, but no one knows for sure. That is not to say that God is the answer. Maybe that's just a huge cop out. I don't know.
Albert Einstein once said, "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind."
Maybe these questions can be answered, but we just aren't evolved enough to understand the informtion. Maybe the answers aren't even within our Universe. Maybe we need to go beyond. Who knows?
"We could have easily been emotionless, colorless beings."
Not really. Color comes from how WHITE light reflects from materials. It has nothing to do with beauty. Black people are black because their skin doesn't reflect light as much as white people. Color only comes important when it's needed for survival. So green grasshoppers are green because they need to camouflage to environment, because grass is green. Not because it is nice color.
I'm saying why have aesthetics at all? Why have emotion at all, if there isn't some kind of purpose for it all besides us simply being here. Why do we have so much complexity to our lives, if it's all for nothing. I think that with infinite time and space, why would we be limited to existing such a short time on this one planet? I'm not really looking for answers, just ideas, and thoughts on the matter.
Actually we DO know why we have everything you mentioned after 5:00. Sun rises because earth spins and it goes under horizontal zone. Flowers are there because they do photosynthesis (make oxugen). Some people have darker skin because their race have lived long near equator. Beatufil is opinion(living in ugly looking world(without this worlds beauty) there still would be something to find appealing). These are 100% sure.
I still gave you 5 stars, cause you weren't pushing your belief. Peace.
My question is why are any of these things beautiful? And yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we all think SOMETHING is beautiful. So what is the point of any kind of beaty? What is the point of emotions? We could have easily been emotionless, colorless beings.
Is it a happy accident for a child born with a severe birth defect? Is it a happy accident that a tornado might come along and whisk your house and you away? The point is that not everything in this "creation" is all beauty and wonderfulness, is it? If you understand science at all, you'll realize how things can organize on their own. No god is needed. Learn some science. Google.
I never said that EVERYTHING is beautiful. Yes there are ugly things, people, and situations in the world, but that was not the focus of my video.
Yes, I understand science. Part of science is asking "why?". Things can organize on their own, but what is the purpose of things being aesthetically pleasing? In nature, some animals are colorful to attract the opposite sex. But WHY must they be colorful to attract the opposite sex? Why can't we all just be big gray blobs?
No, part of science is not asking "why?" That's the job of philosophy. Science only asks 'how?" Don't colorful things attract your attention? What's "aesthetically pleasing" is not a fact, but an opinion. You can write down a list of everything you find aesthetically pleasing and someone, somewhere could be found to disagree with everything on your list. Anyway, check out the series on the science channel "evolve," they explain individual species' traits like sex, and how it evolved.
That's true. What I think is beautiful, could be considered ugly by someone else. But everyone finds SOMETHING to be beautiful.
Why do we perceive anything as beautiful at all? Why do we have emotions? Why do we live such complex lives? If science can explain all of this, without saying, "It's coincidence", then SWEET! I just don't think these questions can be answered at all. I don't think any theist, or scientist can answer these questions definitively. The problem is, people think they can.
Saying that the aesthetic qualities of the universe are simply scientific coincidences, is not an answer. Ok, I guess it's AN answer, but not one that actually explains piddly shit. That's as big a cop out as "God just waved his magic wand and POOF it was made".
again, why the need for anyone to perceive anything as beautiful or ugly? Why do we have music? Why do we have art? Why do we have emotions? Why do we do anything besides eat, sleep, shit, and fuck? Why do we do anything at all? These are questions without answers. We can come up with something that sounds good, but that doesn't make it fact.
Believe me, I have some thoughts on this. Like you, I'm a musician, in fact, I have my Master's degree in conducting and I teach music. I think where you're going with this though is to make an argument from ignorance, to say, "We don't know where aesthetic appreciation came from, so it must have come from god." So, even if I, or anyone else, had flat out no idea where man's penchant for aesthetic experiences come from, you cannot argue they come from god, because you have no evidence for this.
I'm not trying to push any beliefs on anyone. Maybe you should watch my video again. I'm simply sharing my inner turmoil. Part of me wants to just believe what I was taught since childhood...God Made the universe. Then I think that, that is the easy answer. A cop out of ages. We can't explain it, so we invent a supernatual being to have created it.
But I find it even more miraculous for it all to be some scientific coincidence. Maybe there's just a bunch of Q's out there fucking with us?
I don't claim to know the answer. I can't even answer these questions for myself, let alone anyone else. I wasn't really looking for anyone to try to answer these questions for me. Or tell me what to believe. I was just looking for ideas. I would love to hear what other people believe. Hell, make something up. That seems to be what man has done for thousands of years anyway. lol. I just find it interesting to know what people think.
I completely know what you mean. I wish I had a camera so I could make a vlog because everything I want to say won't fit in this box lol. Anyways, I'm the same as you. I believe in God, but not religion. I mean there's thousands of religions and they can't all be right. I've been thinking about God and how everything was created for 6 years now and sometimes it gives me a headache haha. I really don't know where we'll go or if we'll stay here as spirits when we die. Hopefully we'll all find out.
Exactly! All these religions claim to be the only one with the truth about it all. None of them REALLY know though. They are putting all their chips in for books that other men wrote thousands of years ago. I don't need any kind of church to tellme what to believe, and how to prove to others that I'm a good believer. My relationship with God is very personal. If he turns out to be my imaginary friend, in the end, then I'm just glad to have had him all these years.
I don't know. I think it's ok to believe in something. It's all in how seriously we take ourselves. I think we should be open to other people's ideas. Even if we don't agree, it's good to know what other ideas there are out there. I think it's important not to tell others what to believe.
i used to feel this way- live and let live. no more. 911 schaivo alito 41 and 43, are turning the country into a church. a theocracy.
i like hitchens' description of the refrigerator full of gold, buried in the yard. if your neighbor told you he had one, would you respect him? even if he just believed it was buried and had only read about it in ancient old books?
we only respect zany harmful ideas when they are religious. in all other areas of life, we call em on it.
The problem is there are too many people that don't live and let live. They want to force their beliefs on others, even if it means war. This has happened for thousands of years.
Adding to that will not make it go away. All I can do, is be open minded, teach my children to do the same, and hope that the minds stay open in the future generations of my family. My beliefs have changed hugely in the past decade. I expect my thoughts will continue to evolve.

no1funkydiva 3 years ago
So strongest argument that there is creator is cause of emotions?
Emotions are at the same basic level as insticts. Same basic instincts tell you to draw your hand out of flames and eat to not starve.
It's there because it's part of our survival to tell right from wrong. I don't see monkeys going killing each others because they don't have religion.

Hopefully we'll all find out.

time to get a camera! =0)
If he turns out to be my imaginary friend, in the end, then I'm just glad to have had him all these years.

why not just bless the beauty itself, in and of itself by and for itself?
that is pantheism. appreciating the beauty without any of the supernatural baggage of organized religion.
and most important, dance! but dance with the questions, not the answers. having no belief at all in something is a good thing.
