corn i know the actual ending did you have your game not cleaned before the final boss?
everyone i know who HAS this game accidently had their controller un-plugged when the ending sequence happens and the screen freezes but athena actually walks in the castle and then her FULLY ANIMATED FACE APPEARS! and then a black bar appears and say's "the end" on it so thats it just so YOU know...
@xdivax5 Can you, by any chance, prove any of this? I'm inclined to believe that this IS the actual ending because the programmers probably didn't expect anyone to actually make it through to the end. However, this is the ending I saw when I finished the game and it's the same ending I see on every other Athena YouTube video. It's definitely a let-down given how much time and effort it takes to get to the end. For years, I was expecting something really cool, or at least more interesting.
I lost hours as a kid trying to get past level 3. Years later I got the flu and decided to try and beat this game. It took me 2 days. I beat the final boss and... the game messed up!!!! I got mad and haven't played it since. I didn't know until I saw this video that that was the actual ending. Thanks for showing me I did succeed in beating this game.
I put a lot of hours into this game as a kid and it's one of the only ones I never beat :(. I don't remember the instruction manual (or if I even had it), but I'm guessing the harp/lamp collection info wasn't in there? I'm not sure how you're supposed to even figure that part out, it's where I got stuck though :)

The fiery red sword really looks like a guitar. And you didn't mention, but it actually reduces your health every time you use it.
Thanks for putting this video up, because I've never played it through and I've always wondered what it was like. Now I'm glad I didn't go through the trouble myself.
Thank goodness the sucking it isn't me. I was wondering if I had lost my nintendo game playing touch so I thought I'd go online to see what I was doing wrong on this game. Now that I realize it's just a sucky game, I will move on. P.S. I wonder how many little girls got deterred from playing videogames in the early days of nintendo because of this game... hmm...
@LeMandea Not me. When I was a little girl, I wanted this game because the cover art was really cool. Playing the game was a fun and sometimes frustrating experience, but the actual playing of it was better than many NES games of its day. Too bad the ending was so lousy! But at least I went on to play many other video games. But I do agree that many games that are targeted toward girls are terrible nowadays.
Wait a second. I got to the end Boss, and did everything you just did in your video. I hit the shield first with the fire sword, and the shield didnt disappear. Did I do something wrong O.o??? Please advide. Thanks
I really do love this game, sorry that so many ppl seem to hate it. Thanks for the VERY nice run. You have some good skills, how old are you? I still play my nes with my 2 kids and they have a blast honing their skills to play newer systems.
I agree, this game was alot of fun when I was a toddler. There were sometimes I got frustrated, and after seeing how you beat that boss, I have to say good job because me and my older brother could never figure out how to beat that jerk. Anyways, Great video! 10/10
I found something interesting. Apparently, this is a port of an arcade game, and the arcade version has a legitimate ending!
