I was also a skater, and not that it makes me or anyone an expert. But as you should know if you competed.. that run-thrus are a big part of training as is muscle memory. The more run-thrus the better your chances of putting out a clean program. Thus the benefit of steriods for recovery and stamina are undeniable... as is Witt drug taking. Don't understand why you are trying to make like it didn't happen (it is well documented) or it wouldn't help ?
i think all these requirements are a bunch of shit. If you want to win you would put in as much difficulty as possible. And have the freedom to do the hell you bloody well like!Like kissing your arse whilst spinning
Katerina (and some of the other esteemed skaters of the past like Ekaterina Gordeeva, Oksana Baiul etc) skates with such exuberance and soul. This is real artistry.
It is sad to look at the skaters of today with their triples and triple-triple combis...but there is no real soul. They have flat/fake expressions throughout the programs even through the highs and lows of the music, run though the motions like pre-programmed robots, and go through the spirals and footwork like it's a chore. Sad
@rickram1961 you are absolutely right... bisede this everyone tried to "forget" her role during the DDR aerea.she was definitelly sponsored by the regime and had a great live.much of the ddr people went to jail... kathi did just skating and living. well...... she was -so to say - honeckers darling. whatever this means, but i for myself think that she got the curve perfectly....
Such elegance & class. An unforgettable skater, one of the few to break out and become a real star on the world stage well-known to the general public, not just to skating fans. A real winner, on & off the ice.

I noticed Zayak was the only woman to show up for the US. Rosalynn Sumners didn't. Neither did her most biased booster, Peggy Fleming. I love Kati as a skater but thought Peggy as a commentator was disgraceful, being hard put in Sarajevo to say anything nice about Zayak. She made every kind of gracious remark @ Sumners-who choked-and even praised Witt but had a tied tongue when it came to Zayak. Shame on you Peggy.Zayak was a former World Champion. The USFSA & you screwed her over preferring Roz.
OK, I may be an idiot but I am not blind and for me it is absolutely outrageous that Katarina Witt was given 5.8 5.8 5.8 5.7 5.7 5.8 5.8 5.7 5.8 while Midori Ito (the same championships) was given 5.7 5.7 5.4 5.8 5.7 5.6 5.7 5.7 5.8 for the technical merit. Witt program was more mature and complete but it is the second mark to cover this (artistic impression does not mean waving your hands like some people think). Technically Witt's program was like Kindergarten when compared to Midori's.
@jokerwildest this thing that she was part of the "doping" program... where is your proof? She is obviously NOT on steroids here... her body shape is not that of a woman on steroids, c'mon. As for the jumps? Well, they weren't exactly spectacular - that and speed around the ice are the only things steroids would be useful for, otherwise they're utterly futile for figure skating.
@muscleboi4use You know nothing about figure skating ! Skater do run thrus... constantly and rely heavily on stamina (to complete these run thru's), also muscle memory to complete the program in competition... Her body shape is not that of a woman on steriods... you Must be kidding !!!! Yes everyone if you take steriods you look like a body builder ... NOt !!!!! Her drug taking is well know and documented !
@Marchjoy1963 Where is it documented? What was she on and when? No one on here has presented any proof she was on drugs... Please don't tell me I "know nothing about figure skating" when you don't even know me.
@Marchjoy1963 Well I'm a skater and I've been skating since 1974 and I can tell you that of all the sports you can think of, steroids would be of the least help in figure skating. How do steroids help with presentation and artistic impression? Plus back in 1984 30% of the marks were for compulsory figures. How on earth would steroids help with compulsory figures? Compulsory figures require concentration and precision not strength.
@jokerwildest bullshit! doping doenst give you anything here in this sport. doping is only relevant in sports who depend on muscular strength or duration. in figure-scating drugs are more harmful and completely useless.

Well Witt did all the jumps she tried cleanly. Ito had some amazing jumps but also some major mistakes on a few of the jumps. Women doing much harder jumps than the standard triple toes and triple sals were no so new they were not going to be that heavily rewarded. Plus Ito was at her first ever Worlds. Considering all that I would say Ito did well to get the scores she did.
Zayak did skate an excellent programme, but was sold out by the USFSA as the 3rd-THIRD!-woman going to Sarajevo and was a 1982 World champion. The US judges didn't hold her up, so the rest of International judges figured they didn't have to, either. They -USFSA-put all their eggs in Rosalynn Sumners basket, so Elaine was left twisting in the wind. And Sumners didn't even COME here. I would've come , given a last chance to defeat her and not have given up so easily.
you cannot compare mao asada to this. the technology has improved so much, the training, the knowledge of nutrition, etc. If mao asada was competing then, she'd be doing the same jumps as witt.

Though Katarina Witt is not one of favorite skaters due to her Prima Donna attitude, I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful program.
