Each performance of this opera is a creation of its own. If you don't like it then don't watch. I love this performance because it doesn't rely on just expensive costumes and scenery. It requires that the performers actually sing, and I will add that they do a very good job. The austerity complements the beautiful singing.
I usually am a fan of Kent Nagano. However, he plays this too fast and too dryly, the singers are crap and the stage director should be fired (or fired at).
So is the black lady supposed to be another prostitute and he water puddle he splashes in supposed to be Venician canals? Or is the black lady gone mad b/c she thinks she tries to be part of a higher class?
don't know as the others, but I always felt that something is not so simple as it seems in ofenbach's barcarole. it has always seemed to me a bit more tragic and a bit more profound than it is used to be put on the stage.
in this context I found this performance (even a part of it) concordant with my feelings to offenbach's perusal of the 'tales'.
i would have gladly seen it in a full version, to understand the very idea of the director. may be he understood the genius of maestro offenbach.
Nice singing, but I'm sorry, this looks like the work of a director on drugs having a bad dream or some severe withdrawal hallucinations. I HATE when they do crap like this and ruin the opera by trying to put their idiotic stamp on it! Argh!!!!!
Had someone filmed my face while I was watching this, it probably would have made a perfect scene in a comedy! I became progressively puzzled, confused, finally complete bewildered! Your description of the director having a bad trip on drugs can't be beat.
you're SO right, this kind of crap production not ruins ruins the opera for sure but wastes great singers. What they say about critics "those who can - do, those who can't become critics" is true for some directors: those who can compose those who can't direct. Trying to "create" their own opera but dismally failing and ruining it for the audience in the process - unclean - unclean ........
me recuerdo de mis años de escuela en chile y de mi profesor de musica el sr. meza es increible como me trasporte al pasado . todo tiempo pasado fue mejor.
Yeah, honestly what DID just happen? I was under the impression from the Olympia act clips that that lady was an asylum attendant but all of a sudden now she's Giulietta?! This production is so out there, I love it! But will no one upload the Antonia act?
Singing is respectable, but the rest of the production is horrible.

Pourquoi tenter d'actualiser les grands opéras du XIXe siècle? Ces chefs-d'œuvre méritent beaucoup mieux. Dommage...

If the director wanted to transform Offenbach to a moribund composer he unfortunately achieved his goal.

Is not Agnes Baltsa one of those mezzosoprano?

Why is Nicklausse dressed as a woman? Is the director unaware of what a trouser role is?

No. The pair seems to be Isabelle Vernet and Brigitte Balleys. Both are mezzos.

Our tender caresses for ever!
Time flies far from this happy oasis
And does not return
Burning zephyrs
Embrace us with your caresses!

Give us your kisses!

Is that a skylight, or are they singing under a large trash chute?
Great singing, sensuous choreography, but the direction was like watching your grandmother dance in hotpants at your graduation. A very bad trip!

Je lis les commentaires. J'ai le sentiment que celles et ceux qui commentent n'entendent rien à la musique ni à la mise en scène nouvelle sans excès.
