Neither!, it is a Latin!, a language once spoken trouhg out the Roman Empire and from where the two most beatifull languages ever spoken evolved, The Spanish and the Italian languages.
speaking from experiance, the notes that the high winds and strings are playing during the choir's long note (that is bordering on too loud in my opinion) are a real challenge to play as fast as Mr. Orff wanted them. it was fun.
speaking from experiance, the notes the oboes in the orchestra are playing when the choir is holding out the long not (to the point that you cant hardly hear the accompaniment) are REALLY hard to play that fast. but it is a fun challenge =)

@65attila Really? When I listen to this music, I find that the O Fortuna is the only part approaching boring because it is supersaturated in our culture. It's everywhere. But I find the rest of the work to be very charming, devilish, powerful, fun and interesting. Even touching at times. But, that's just me.
I know this might sound odd, but the first time when I heard this song I thought it was a Buddhist chant, especially 0:1-0:10, the gong and the bells...
I guess I am not the only one who has the "weird" ear: a YouTube user tagged Perotin's "Beata Viscera" as Buddha. Amen/Amitabha. LOL
At 3:06 the second tenor was slightly off pitch and the 4th alto came in a fraction of a second early. How do I know? Because I'm better than all of you.

The early church sound of this music works for me only in small doses and 3 or
4 pieces at a time are sufficent as tedium sets in.

The text was medieval, but the music was written in the 20th century, in the thirties, I believe.
