Actually that's not right if you watch episodes 1-26 and put it all together in your head and think about it you'll see that it looks like it's a medieval age but it's not it's the future if you think about it you'll see that that place where the red blobs came from was that research lab or whatever it was because those red blobs were those scientists and that cannon was that holy beam (I forgot the name of it) that blew up the caste.

I figured it out the first time I watched the whole seriesXD.
