Well, "insanesage", first, I live in Singapore. I've lived in Asia for 5 years, I'd say I know a bit about the Culture here. This "class" thing you refer to as an innocent thing is just the kind of racism that someone with your lack of cultural subtly would never notice. So called "dusky" women (it affects men too) are treated like inferiors because of their dark skin. This is the most insideous type of racism. Sadly, it isn't exclusive to Ponds. Tons of whitener exists in India, including back alley treatments. Indian media considers darker women to be too sultry and impure. There's a huge problem, likely stemming from colonialism and there are aggressive ad campaigns everywhere. There are even clinics with real doctors bleaching girl's skin.
