I just listened to David G, talking about how they made that song and it's truly remarkable. Listening to the track backwards, Syd did ONE take with the guitar, turned it all around with guitar backwards and it worked perfectly. BTW this song just takes me to nice quiet place.
He was trying to shed EVERYTHING that reminded him at all of what was and what had happened. He also purposefully gained a ton of weight, just to be unrecognizable. His former fiance was in absolute shock as was everyone else. He apparently thought it all very amusing when people didn't recognize him but it's such a perfect reflection of how overwhelmingly depressed and confused he had become. Wonderful, beautiful, thoroughly misunderstood Syd. He was semi-self-destructing.
