He was physically there right in the midst of the fighting and the killing covered with his loin cloth, unarmed, no police protection despite Nehru's fervent appeals and with that long staff in his hand.. It was just his presence which did which millions of pounds or weapons of mass destruction could not. A modern day miracle, again in the words of Earl Mountbatten. Why I surrender to Gandhi or "Bapu" and go into silent prayer is when my intellect travels back to Noakhali in East Bengal during the days of India's independence, this "half-naked fakir" (words of Sir Winston Churchill) could stop thousands from being maimed or killed in the riots which a 100000 hand-picked troops could not accomplish in the Punjab in the very words of Lord Mountbatten in the height of his ascendancy. There is so much analyzing... so many people so quick to judge.. Gandhi was modest not just because it's good quality, but to avoid things such as this. He never stood and said, " I am the greatest man who ever lived" or put himself high on the pedastool. So many people respect him for the self that lives in him. People try to equate there judgements based on their own egos, and wonder why anyone would follow him. If they would look inward as much as they look outward, they'd discover a lot more

M.K Gandhi, the reason why people hate him is because he always appeased the Muslims. Did he ever get respect from Muslims? Never!! He supported the khilafat movement which had nothing to do with our independence. Why did Gandhi object the decision of cabinet and insisted that Somnath temple should be reconstructed out of public funds,not government funds? Ironically in 1948 he pressurized Nehru and Patel to carrying renovations of mosques in Delhi out of government expenses?

I'm reading Ghandi's Autobiography right now, it's really good. Inspiring. We seem to have a lot of the same values, although he was much much smarter than I am! Still kind of cool to identify with a lot of what he believed. He hated injustice so much, but didn't hate anyone personally.
