  • 6 people did not take Kit's personality into consideration.

  • All I know is, I heard this piece after watching Badlands which I freakin' love. I have no enthusiasm nor do I have time to do an online research on the scale, chord, or whatever musical origins of this piece is just to prove to someone's youtube comment that my comment is "more" right. peace.

  • Do you have the mp3?! It's impossible to find this version.

  • What a great music for a great movie.

  • I have tracked down the 6 dislikes and wish to share there stories.

    6. This is so "not" cool. rip off!

    5. Martin Sheen is a friggin communist!

    4. Sounds kinda faggy to me.

    3. I hate myself, therefore I hate.

    2. Oops spilt bong and hit wrong button.

    1. How the hell does this help me book my trip to Wall Drug?

  • This has a "dreamier" feel to it than the album version.

I find the movie and the music hypnotic and addictive. There are a lot of strange messages in Badlands, some repeat often. I put it on just to listen to when building stuff or working on my house. An odd, beautiful movie from an odd, beautiful time in this country.

  • Is your so cool by Hans zimmer a cover of this

  • @mma4life23 sort of. It's an homage. Listen to the two, one after the other and you can spot differences. What makes them sound similar are the marimbas.

  • hi, thanks for your email. not sure who did it but it was an instrumental pop song, around the 60's - 70's. heard it quite a few times on the radio. if i find out any more, could let you know if you like.

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • During the late 60's early 70's, I went to the cinema alone quite often. I saw quite a few films "by accident" as it were, as I'd gone to see the "support feature" that was on with the main film. They did that in those days, 2 films for your money. Get Carter, Kes and this were all discovered purely by chance. This piece of music haunted me for years as I couldn't recall it's title and everyone I asked looked at me blank when I told them it was from Badlands. Now I have it on CD. Superb.

  • @AbeGrimes

i'm a kindred spirit and did much the same thing then, saw the same films and was a bit of a lost spirit in those days. there was also a pop song out about then called 'victorian serenade'. looked for on youtube but cant find it.

  • @youshite Do you mean Elizabethan Serenade by Ronald Binge or the reggae version by Boris Gardiner? Not heard of Victorian Serenade.

  • Terrence Malick is a genius, the movie "Badlands" is just one of the best I've seen so far !

  • Beautiful!

  • this wonderful piece of music is as addictive as The music for a found harmonium by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Luckily I found the Orff-CD and I'm playing it daily.

  • @jeanny1952, hi Jeanny, nah, I took your suggestion and listened to Found Harmonium, and didn't find it nearly as ethereal as Gassenhauer, interesting but a tiny bit grating when listened to more than once, you and I were born in the same year, its been a long life, and for me much of it difficult...............G

  • 5 people are sheriffs ...

  • superb

  • enough arguing.... can someone tell me what this piece of music is called please...

  • @gandelf1967 It is a version of "Musica Poetica" byCarl Orff and Gunild Keetman as credited in the film.

  • @Sedona007 thank you my friend......

  • this movie for me is the best just many things rolled into one martin sheen and sissy great actors , true filmaking 10/10 , and dont forget warren oates.

  • this was what my sister walked down the aisle to x lovely piece of music x

we also played it at my dads funeral because he loved it too

  • this was what my sister walked down the aisle to x lovely piece of music x

  • I Love this song! The best movie!

  • This is a pretty darn cool song!

  • all you old hippies it was used in the TV show Queer as Flok

  • This is move is so fucking good!!!!

  • Wonderful movie. Wonderful piece of music. Always reminds me of I Got You Babe.

  • One of the best movies ever. Anyone know where I can get a hold of the complete soundtrack? PM me if you do.

  • @DAkkermann No soundtrack was released in the US. :(

  • Why this has 555 251 354 less views than Justin Biebers Baby I will never know

  • This doesn't have enough views

  • i saw this movie back in 73 and it still kicks ass

  • I saw this film at SUNY Buffalo Cinema class (back in 2002). A great film

  • Music Massages The Soul....

  • Well, technically Zimmer didn't exactly 'rip this off', True Romance is in general sort of a homage to Badlands, along with the voiceover and overall story.

  • This is romantic.

  • sissy spacek yum yum

  • Terrible ripoff of the zimmertime. Try using the Mindtage.

  • @Mindtage are you referring to hans zimmer? because he ripped this off.... this is years before true romance and carl orff is hundreds of years before both hahaha

  • @blaiserfilms There can be only one.

  • @blaiserfilms Carl Orff died in 1982, not hundreds of years ago.

  • @robwalmsley72 that made me lol

  • @blaiserfilms

Carl Orff was only born in 1895...

  • @blaiserfilms

Carl Orff isn't "hundreds of years before" Hans Zimmer. Orff only died in 1982 - hardly "hundreds of years" ago.

  • @blaiserfilms Um, no. Carl Orff was alive and well when Badlands was released. He lived from 1895-1982. Not all classical music is from the 17th century.

  • @DarkRider69 thanks i get it. my point was still made. carl orff did a version of oh fortuna and that was written in the 1500's so i got mixed up.

  • this music is by james taylor called migration !

  • @SIRSMITH08 No it isn;t, the end credits are misleading.

  • @Maxshard sorry your right , at the end of the movie it said theme migration by james taylor ! and of course it isnt . they tricked me lol.

  • @SIRSMITH08 Damn, my post went missing. Not sure if you are being a little sarcastic (in a lollable way I'm sure) but the title of the music is Music Poetica by Carl Orff, sometimes referred to as Gassanhauer which is German for 'popular song'. It''s a stunning piece which is why I'm sure so many of us search for it in its various versions.

  • @Maxshard no i wasnt being sarcastic , just agreeing with you ,im ok with being wrong ,i just want the facts and as u pointed out the end credits are misleading i worship those who take time to find out the facts , its a great piece of music that stays with u once heard ,ive been after it for ages, shame on james taylor ,as the credits tell us theme migration by JT ,so u look at JT albums and there is a track called migration but its not this track its a vocal track very confusing .

  • Carl Orff's musica poetica really fit the theme of the "Badlands" movie. More of a fit than most...

  • true romace is like a complete copy of this song. bit differnt though. both amazing though.

  • @marctheshark101

Hans Zimmer, the one who wrote the Song "Beach Song" from the MOVIE "True Romance" had full permission to rework parts of the score of this movie. What he did wasn't copying or plagiarizing-- It was a tribute.

  • @80storms yer i assumed it was a tribute. wasnt bashing hans zimmers version.

  • similar music? i love true romance and this and just married randomly has a nice similar song. does anyone know anymore. preferably with xylaphone like this.

  • Watched this last week on Turner Classic Moves. Great film!! Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen are wonderful in this film. Love the music.

  • @disneymom84 Just for your interest...if you liked the film you should check out the song "Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen. Not many people know that it was written as a ballad about the couple that went on a murder spree across the badlands, which the movie is based off as well. You should check it out, amazing song when you listen to the lyrics.

  • this is a strong film,i first saw in the late 70s just a great movie.this is one of my top 3 movies .ever . i cant say how much this film is great.10/10.

  • There is a weird childlike innocence in this movie, very unsettling

  • I loved this song when I first saw this movie many years ago. Kind ironic, considering the movies content, huh ? There was something very haunting about it, and and at the same time very beautiful. In fact, I'm watching the movie right now. It's on TCM - The Turner Classic Movie Channel.

  • Wonderful music

  • So simple yet so beautiful ...

  • If you don't like this you're dead inside...!!!

  • 5 people can't distinguish the difference between bad music and good music.

  • Excellent song, excellent film!

  • Where can I buy/find this song?

  • @MarsupialMasquerade

The song is called 'Gassenhauer' and it was written by the German composer Carl Orff. There was a 'Carl Orff's Greatest Hits' style compilation out a while ago in the UK, so it may be on there.

  • @thissy01 : "Gassenhauer" is a lute piece from the late Renaissance, arranged for percussion instruments and recorder (this version) by Gunild Keetman in the late 50's. She worked in close collaboration with C. Orff on developing the children music "method" known as "Orff Schulwerk", and was herself an accomplished composer.

  • TOTALY BRILLIANT

  • Amazing!!!

  • "I'll kiss you're ass if he don't look like James Dean!"

  • @campaz83 Malik, a genius...

  • Haunting movie, haunting theme. Thank you.

  • great tune!

  • Hello my dear son Elliott. Its 5 am in the morning and I couldn't sleep. I kept hearing this happy and yet haunting melody in my head. I can't say why It makes me think of you my child, but it does. Perhaps its because it was originnaly based on music by children who were just playing around on instruments. Anyway to see your happy glad smile in my minds eye is a good thing, but I am missing you so in my life. I dearly wish all this wasn't happening Elliott, but it is. I love you Elli. Daddy x

  • " fabulosa "

  • Anytime I hear this...wow. Every single time I watch that movie...wow. One of the best films ever made.

  • @CAFreeling - I was just thinking the same thing. I was watching True Romance and kept thinking the music reminded me of some soundtrack, until it hit me the film was Badlands.

  • boring

  • this is the first film were i actually rewind the credits in order to hear the theme for a second time, i think it has become my new favourite.

  • One of the most borderline perfect debut films ever made!

Love how this is used in the film.

  • THIS FILM FOR ME, IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS YOU CAN SEE , AND. WARREN OATS.A TOTAL GREAT .FILM LOOK AND UNDERSTAND

  • Great composition! Loves how "humble" & slow it starts and continually gains force. Music at its best!

  • Sublime...saw Badlands...for the first time in decades...I now remember: film used to actually be good (that is, before the explosions, noise, brainless computer special effects, cliche's, cardboard characters, ad nauseum of today's cinema garbage...this piece of music is lovely

  • A man and his gun...and his (stolen) car...in the sundown...with a woman at his feet...protecting her...or, maybe conquering the continent ?

Don´t misunderstand me - it´s a wonderful film by Malick.

    But it is also Hardcore-Kitsch.

  • I read, or heard once. That this piece was created to played using the box of musical instruments that all primary schools have, triangles, xylophone, shakers, blocs drums ect...

  • This music is actually by Carl Orff, not George Aliceson Tipton.

  • co's your a monkey and it in the genesis fuck wit

  • One of the greats words in the bible is freedom god wants you too be your self

    Not what

Some one else wants you to be not bond in your emotions

And memories but free to live now and look a head with confidence

He wants you to find out what you are and enjoy being you he wants you to be free

Love him love your self love all

  • @alixz777 Tell me please: what qualifies you to tell people what God wants? Do you speak Arabic or Chinese or Japanese or Yohimbo or Comanche? Exactly which God is it that tells you what he wants?

  • co's your a monkey

  • thank you so much. you are such a good person for putting this up. you really are. what a beautiful piece of music. and what a fantastic film. for me it is one of those perfect little films that makes me want to watch more film. it is a pity that films do not live up to the quality and original vision of this film.

The feeling of it has a great impact, but there is something in the characterisations that blows me away on repeated viewing. So flawed so real.

  • quasi 1500

  • This song goes back to around the 1500s.

  • this score is great and for me one of the best american films ever.

  • This music is amazing. And Terence Malick is some kind of genius for choosing it for "Badlands."

  • isnt every tarantino film a homeage?

  • I have searched for this piece of music for over 10 years! I have just been going through old HSBC Adverts because I remembered I heard it on an HSBC advert in 2007! I love it!

  • I love this version!! Great film Badlands and great song.

  • This is a tune for the ages!!

  • @Macroptiliummosaic - Grow up u have anything else better to do in life than argue and get pissed over a song.

Besides that the piece is amazing. Heard Hans on "To Train a Dragon" Trailer. Cool to know where the original came from.

  • Thank you 2Big. You are however a day late, and I hope NEVER a dollar short.

  • Every time I hear this music I think of calvary riding against machine guns. Some so brutal yet beautiful.

  • Amazing Song & film even though its messed up lol saw it 4 the first time on sky the other night its left a lasting imprestion on me lol

  • Hans Zimmer really ripped this song off with his True Romance theme.

  • Just what I was thinking

  • i thought it was the song?

  • Actually Mr. Zimmer applied what intellegent people recognize as homage.

  • Oh, I guess I'm not intelligent then. It wasn't an homage you nerdy little faggot, it was a rip off. Zimmer assumed people wouldn't recognize it. So go fuck yourself.

  • First, If you get into a name calling contest with me, you will lose.

Second, Does your mother know you talk like that?

  • Do you know that I fuck your mother up the ass every night? You jew nigger faggot.

  • Its OK Macro. I fuck her in the ass too. She says I'm the best. Oh, so does your Mom, but I do her in her twat.

  • Do you have any friends Macro that aren't in the KKK or the Aryan Brotherhood?

  • I'm done then. Jesus may forgive you, but I don't want anything to do with people like you.

  • @Macroptiliummosaic Not to interrupt your whole 15 year old skinhead rant there but the movie True Romance itself was directly influenced by Badlands, Tarantino (The writer of True Roamnce) and Tony Scott (The director for those playing the home game) have both said this, so, and is everyone paying attention, Zimmer intionally based You're So Cool (The Theme from True Romance) Of of this work which was itself influenced by Gassenhauer by Carl Orff, Asshat

  • @Professorchaos907 Superb that someone else knows the true facts. I made the same points a couple of years ago , but just got the usual abuse from idiots ! ....

May I add a couple of other points that some folk may not be aware of but may find interesting. Carl Orff used to work with fellow composer and arranger Gunild Keetman . Who also had some input on this piece. Carl Orff also said that his influence for Gassenhauer came from a peice by Hans Neusielder , a Lute player , in 1536.

  • @Professorchaos907 well said.

  • Fabulous lost but now found

  • I loveeeeeeeeeeee this song! :D

  • Thanks to TubeYouSter for the LP info.

  • Beautiful piece of music from what is quite possibly one of the most bordeline flawless film debuts ever!

  • This is the greatest piece of music ever.

  • @AWESOME90002

    No, it's not.

  • Hello virgin

    It's called sarcasm.

  • Does anyone know the precise recording of "Gassenhauer" that is used in this video? It's not digitally recorded but it has more "guts" than the other versions on You Tube. I'd really like to find this recording on a CD, or online, somewhere. Who are the performers? Label?

  • im looking for it too, if you find it could you tell me where, ill do the same. Thanks.

  • @mac231208 (3 weeks ago)

"Does anyone know the precise recording of "Gassenhauer" that is used in this video? ... Label?"

See on eB@y "QUINTESSENCE PMC 7127 CARL ORFF Street Song stereo LP!" - (190363789010)

  • Just noticed that the video poster ElMiusikman

has erroneously identified this piece of music as

"Music by George Aliceson Tipton", although the film "Badlands" (1973) by Terrence Malick is correct - the film credits has "Musica Poetica - Carl Orff & Gunild Keetman" that is the source of the song "Gassenhauer" (Street Song), which was arranged by Keetman based on a 16th century piece for lute.

  • I absolutely love this song. I wish I could get ahold of this rendition of the song (from the Badlands soundtrack).

  • Memorable tune from a top notch film

  • quality tune and film

  • Y después está la versión de Hans Zimmer en Amor a Quemarropa!

  • Totally forgotten and underrated film! Fantastic soundtrack to boot. Thanks mate

  • I don't think it's underrated, but it was certainly forgotten, seeing as it came out the same year as Mean Streets, which, I might add, isn't anywhere near as good as Badlands

  • I read somewhere when this was shown at the same festival (Tribeca) as Scorsese's "Mean Streets" , it was Badlands that got most of the buzz!

  • "Badlands" and "Mean Streets" are both great films. But it's like comparing steak to ice cream. They're both delicious, but have 2 totally different tastes.

  • What if you're a vegan, tlibber? Or your teeth hurt with cold food?

But as you correctly say, two fantastic movies.

  • Music is also in Ratcatcher

  • It's also used in 'Finding Forrester' with Sean Connery.

  • Gran bel film, e che bella colonna sonora.

  • The events that inspired the brilliant film Badlands.

Charles Starkweather (age 19 )and Caril Fugate (age 14) In 1958 started an 8 day murder spree in Nebraska , killing 8 people. Badlands fictionalised the crime on film. Quentin Tarrentino's film True Romance copies the 'love story' aspect of the Badlands , and the real event. Tarrentino claims he was paying homage to Mallicks brilliant film by coppying it so closely , to the point of reworking and using Carl Orff's tune; Gassenhaur .

  • He/they (depending on which story you believe) killed 11 people.

  • Lyrical Wax -

Yes . That is absolutely correct . It was 11 people. When I wrote " 8 day murder spree" .. I wrote the 8 , again by accident.

I'm afraid I hadn't got round to correcting it.

  • @TheOctastar Tarantino only wrote the script. Hans Zimmer did the music witch he admitted where a version of gassenhauer. Probably as a homage to this film

  • @TheOctastar Gassenhauer was not created by Carl Orff, it was written in 1536

  • @FuckWorkdays Yes that's correct. It was reputedly written by Hans Neusielder as you say in 1536. Many people believe that even Neusielder may have re-arranged it from an even earlier piece still. I was only refering to Carl Orff's arrangement of it for this film . Thanks for taking an interest :)

  • @TheOctastar True Romance indeed, but Natural Born Killers (written by Tarantino as well) and Wild at Heart (probably inspired by Badlands and certainly an inspiration for Tarantino) are quite similar in tone, plot, characters and their relationships.

  • @MrKohlenstoff Despite the resemblence in theme with Badlands, I think Wild at heart is highly original, and whereas Badlans is a realist exercise, I think Wild at heart portrays some incredible surrealistic scenes. Both movies are great!

  • I'm surprised that it wasn't nominated for an academy award.

  • this film is fantastic. i took a film class and studied this movie in and out. its great. the soundtrack is beautiful. i really appreciate everything about this film.

  • love the big contrast between the music and the movie, the music is light, happy, playful and refreshing, whilst the movie depicts the worst of humanity and all its sordidness - yet they both blend wonderfully

  • I wish you'd change the description to allow due credits to the REAL composer and arranger: the music is more than 400 years old anyway, but the arrangement for percussion instruments is by GUNILD KEETMAN!! Not, C. Orff or that fraud of a composer known as H. Zimmer or anyone else.
