  • 0:30 Haha, it's like he's saying in his head "Why the fuck am I playing this slow!!! I wanna play fast".

  • i came here for a sod cover :(

  • Is this from 1985 or what?

  • that was insane. also, was this dvd taken on a webcam?

  • Sounds like the bumblebee smoked a bit too much crack.

  • @FurbyParade226 Or Meth

  • I like how he looks progressively more bored throughout the video

  • It took 0:40 seconds to play it slow, and 0:14 seconds to play it fast. That's 2.8... times as quickly as I could play that if I practiced for a week. Fuck you, Rusty Cooley. I now feel inferior.

  • unhelpful showoff

  • well. he played it fast and clean. but i dont think his way of playing is healthy. his arm is very tense during the fast part. when he is showing slow he uses his wrist for picking, and when doing it fast he uses his arm and not moving fast. he uses strengh and muscle tension to play. MAB says in his video lesson that if u change ur picking hand technic when u play fast and slow its because its wrong and u have to slow it down to improve it. i agree with him.

  • @catapei Funny thing is though that MAB does not pick the same way slow as he does fast. Look at his right hand when he does slow demonstrations versus fast, it's different.

I think some people can use their elbow to pick without injury, but not everyone. Rusty's been doing this for many years now and it obviously works for him. However I'm sure that MAB's advice works for alot of people, it worked for me! I could never pick with my elbow.

  • what is the name of this scale?

  • i can see when he plays slow, he looks bored.... then when he speeds it up, his face makes an expretion of... finaly god dammit.... I Thought that slow part was never gonna end...

  • Way over-rated typewriter. He approaches music like it is a sport.

  • @shredder1965 oh really, did you ask him, is that what he told you?

  • fuck you rusty! your too good

  • He's bored and I'm bored. Scales suck.

  • He seems so bored

  • holy shit rusty cooley was my first guitar teacher like 10 years ago

  • Ok, now I feel lame... *ACTIVATE BEAST MODE* Ok, now it's fun.

  • flight of the bumble bee lol

  • Tornado mind fuck.

  • so desperate melody

    sucks

  • 0.29-0.38, rusty finds no joy in his scales

  • sounds funny fast

  • He seems bored

  • he's absolutely monster!

  • He looks SOOOOOO bored when hes playing it slow

  • he looks really bored with this.

  • super fag

  • 0:39 he looks very sad :(

  • he looks so bored

  • holy shitdeis

  • i know from experience, this is a boring excersize

  • I ca n easily play it that fast. Except for that bit towards the end of the vid........

  • It's just an exercise. My teacher told me to do the same thing.

  • I love how bored he looks doing it slow

  • nice 1234567894567823459.

  • Nice 1234556764363636!

  • that looks more painful than challenging

  • Gotta laugh at as many people still say about Yngwie "only plays fast, and duuuhh..." and then wow over this guy. Has he written any songs of note? (another BS claim against Yngwie, that he has no compositional skills and no soul.) There are also tons other, great guitarists who can look totally relaxed while playing at that fast speed, don't look all tensed up--owes to technique. Video lesson in his home office? must really be going places for such a big name. Nice speed in one position though.

  • Check out his Overworld stuff. It's not just a giant pile of shred.

  • Outworld...?

  • @screaminone, have you even attempted to listen to any of his songs from his solo album or Outworld at all? This is what is called an 'exercise'. Real musicians use them to become better and improve technique, including Malmsteen, exercises aren't meant to be played with you so called 'feel' or 'soul'

  • This is a bad video, 1: for Rusty to have distributed, and 2: for this person to have posted. I mean, if you're gonna MAKE a video, than show some damn interest in what you're doing, and not have a look on your face like, thinkin to himself: "hmmph, you sad motherfuckers watching this will NEVER play or write like ME..." He's not translating interest to me as a viewer. As regards Outworld, "WarCry" (Zema's AWESOME screamer!!) the solo is a bit disjointed. UnderTheInfluence is the same,2x as bad

  • 1: This is a clip from an instructional video NOT UPLOADED by Rusty himself.

2: So there for you have not seen the whole video, he is a guitar teacher, he doesnt just play the lick then do nothing, how about buying the dvd for yourself and find out.

And finally, stop being such a typical malmsteen fanboy, At least Rusty Cooley changes his key signatures from each song he plays unlike Yngwie "Eminor" Malmsteen.

  • 1: i'm aware of that.

2: if THIS video were used (as by the person that uploaded it) to promote Rusty, there's no way in hell i'd waste my money.

Ok, about YM: Perpetual Flame was better than his previous 2 or 3 cd's, which i liked only 2or3 songs off each; sometimes i wish he'd use a rhythm gtrst(will nevr happen) and play with more 'crunch;' he tends to overplay the acoustic live; I don't much like when he uses that pizzicato-(?)-sounding style of picking....

  • ...for example, the opening to 'Be Careful What You Wish For' from new Perpetual Flame. Sounds neither aggressive nor nice, but flimsy. I'd like to hear him use pinch harmonics more, but his playing remains very fluid, not artificial-sounding, And, i think 25 yrs later, he remains, and quite possibly will remain an influence for many yrs to come. He wrote the book, laid the foundation, and planted the cornerstone for the genre....Call me a fanboy--how about these names:....

  • ...Tommy T. Baron. Metal Mike Clesciak. The guy from Amidst the Fallen. Jag Panzer. Dave Murray. Dream Evil. James Byrd...and others im sure.

  • lol whatever dude, i'm surprised you wasted your time replying to me. Maybe you should be practising guitar. Maybe one day you will be as good as beloved malmsteen.

  • well, okay. so much for discussing things. i find all those players much more well-rounded and pleasant to listen to than Rusty, who seems more focused purely on being faster than everybody else. With Yngwie, we know thats not the case, as he is more interested in stressing melody and composition. Keith Richards is a more loved and known guitarist, and yet so is Yngwie. Who knows Rusty outside of this community?...Whats it say about your opinions, if you felt it a waste to reply? Just askn. Out.

  • And would a pure fanboy offer up things he dislikes about one of his favorite guitarists, by giving an honest critique/critisism?

  • Perpetual Flame... More like Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn olol.

  • thats what you call practice kids :)

  • RC looks bored. He plays very nicely in one position on the fretboard, though.

  • yeah, i noticed that too

  • look at his fucking wrist, that's where 100 % of the movement is

  • nice demonstration! thanks!

  • my first thought was "he is gonna run out of time, he is just gonna show it slowly" my second thought was "dude....wtf"

  • haha i was thinking the same. +1

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • why does it look like he uses his elbow when he picks fast

  • because he does use his elbow

  • Isn't that bad for your elbow joint. I'm just asking cause I've heard and read. I'm trying to develop some speed picking. so i need as much info as i can get

  • it's bad for RSI's

  • I've never heard of that acronym.

  • repetitive strain injury

  • he also mentions in afew lessons that he moves his elbow to sweep and completely locks his wrist, he's got a weird picking style i can tell you that much.

  • @shreddakj he isn't really using his elbow for picking.

he uses his elbow hold his hand in the right position over the strings he wants to pick ;) and because he's pickin very fast and changing strings frequently, it looks like he uses his elbow

  • he actually only uses his elbow to move to the next string, hes 100% wrist picking, he mentions this on a few vids

  • @shreddakj actually thats an initialism.

  • @shreddakj So is masturbation

  • @TheRebel101

Use your fingers and wrist and listen to some lectures by Shawn Lane.

  • @TheRebel101 Chris Impellitteri uses his elbow. Just food for thought.

  • @TheRebel101 nah dude don't worry about it, paul gilbert plays a lot from the elbow, his joints are fine

  • @TheRebel101 that's not INFO, is commun knowledge dude, you sounded like a very ignorant person, only stupid people ask stupid questions, heard that one?

  • @TheRebel101 He's not solely using his elbow, he does a combination of the wrist and elbow. Different strokes for different folks as they say though I would recommend leaning towards picking with the wrist moreso.

  • @TheRebel101 it is much easier and less painful to use ur wrist... when u use ur elbow... ur using that joint as a fulcrum to move.. but at the same time ur straining a major muscle in ur body.. no 2 sorry.. the forarms and ur biceps.. when u use ur wrist ... it is mostly bone so nothing is strained.u can go for much longer with ur wrist than your elbow.. plus using ur elbow is somewhat unstable, because the range u have to swing is much bigger.. u have to really muscle up to get it to stay small

  • lol! not according to 'deepislandboy!' observing Yngwie's picking skill, it's very much confined to thumb and index-finger movement, he just kinda flexes 'em. THAT'S control, imo.

  • @shreddakj he does not pick from his elbow he just moves his forearm to adjust the level of his hand to the string he plays on. his picking comes all from the wrist.

  • @shreddakj also from the technique of picking he is using called chicken picking, it gives it a better tone you know.

  • @shreddakj lol obivously...lol

  • Because he wanks a lot!

  • @TheRebel101 well he doesnt use his elbow completely, its actually half his wrist with half his elbow which is ok but still could be bad, but when he sweep picks he uses his elbow completely

  • @TheRebel101 He uses his wrists more its just that he tenses up because he's going for a big run lots of the big shredders do it

  • Haha having the time of his life at the slow part, priceless face, love it.. RC rocks btw, but everybody allready knew that.

  • I'm pretty sure he just played that for 50 seconds, and then 15 seconds. Wow.

  • fucking awsom i wish i could make the chromatic scale sound that good

  • it sounds like bat man into he goes insane

  • Once the novelty factor wears off, this exercise is REALLY useful. For me at least.

Everyone should at least give this a go.

  • Wow. How depressing. I find an awesome video of Rusty ripping the shit out of an innocent fretboard using a scale that is (in my opinion) the single most important & single most ignored scale in metal, only to see that the comment page is flooded by a bunch of ass-backward fuckwits trying to out-insult each other, instead of discussing wether or not Rusty is the most awesome being alive. Which he is.

This demonstrates the guitarworld perfectly. Grow up, you effervescent 13-year-olds.

  • @BloedendeAppelflap They will grow up. Didn´t you know that?

  • @BloedendeAppelflap I remember Dave Weiner saying "There are three elements to music : 1 Rhythm 2 Repetition 3 Phrasing" Examine what this guy is doing and generally does and take what you will from that statement.

  • @stevegrierson Well, as the implication behind your statement is negative, I would just like to point out that this is a technique exercise, not an actual solo or piece of music. I don't know if that's relevant to the point you were making, but I felt it should be mentioned.

  • @BloedendeAppelflap Direct me to any of this guys videos anywhere on youtube that has all elements of what Dave Weiner describes as music and I will delete my comment

  • you all can talk some real shit, but let's see one of you little fucker's do this, post a video reply of YOURSELF, (not of someone who you think is better, but yourself....) & we'll see how much room you have to talk

  • Is that right? So glad you could share that with us. Now fuck off.

  • Go and exercise your little cock fuckhead.

  • Cooley exercises your sisters.

  • Wow, someone has an anger management problem much?

Why do I have no videos on my profile? Because I play guitar instead. Get a life, sonny boy.

  • ByJovi you fucking pansy go listen to the joonas bro's is this is to much for you

  • closedcoil you are obviously a brainless little prick. Why dont you fuckoff you little shit.

  • listen to paul gilbert if you want a comfortable medium between straight up super fast shred and feeling but yeah rusty is kickass if not a little lifeless

  • I'm certain you dont so fuckoff!

  • im sure you dont even play guitar.

  • ummm he's....practicing and teaching an excersize.....you fucking idiot. he's not composing. and what does " put some feel into it" supposed to mean...how the fuck do you know how he feels when he plays...playing fast doesn't mean the music means nothing infact there more thought put into his stuff than any "feely" guitarists put into thier music. so suck a big one learn how to play in his league then talk shit.

  • this is an exercise faggot

  • Miles Davis and Charlie Parker used do this exercise. So did Hendrix ...LOLZZZ

    Wanker.

  • The best exercise is to listen to some fucking music. Music ...these things teach you nothing except how to play shit like this fast. Get a finger gripper to exercise your finger play MUSIC on your fucking instrument. YouTube is full of fucking noobs like this with these crap videos.

  • i couldnt agree more. its all about originality

  • Fuckin' A Garbage!!!

  • technique opens up many more doors for your creativity i'm not shunning your opinion cause you're right musicality is more important than "shredding" but there are soulful shredders so stereotyping them all is completely stupid

  • VERY nicely said, thumbs up.

  • Faster never made anyone better than anyone else.

No feeling here. There is never a note or series of notes emphasized. No vibrato, no phrasing. Same old mindless noodling. Where are the melodic solos/songs. Can guys play with any emotion at any speed but fucking faster than fast anymore. It get so boring. Could you really listen to stuff like this for hours and be entertained?

  • thats the way you look at it,does not mean everyone does.I agree with you in a way,I cant listen to someone like Rusty Cooley for more than a song at a time, same as Michael Angelo Batio. Some people really enjoy it though and can listen to the entire album in a sitting and enjoy it, so why not?As a guitarist I tend to just search for these videos so I can see how ridiculously technical a lot of these guys are, a level Id never ever ever get close to without 20 hours a day practice for decades

  • Thats cool. I just wished some of these guys would focus more on songwriting, phrasing, tone, and vibrato rather than just scales and sheer speed. Scales are really meant to be played differently than what they show you guys. Classical musicians use them but in a very different way. Know what I mean. They have melody. Most of these guys lack it in about every video I have seen. Just back and forth up and down. Jesus give me a break. Jealous. No.

I'm jealous of guys like Schenker, Roth, Halen, ect

  • can just put it down to the style, if its what they write and enjoy playing then they shouldnt change for anyone, a lot of these guys do have really melodic songs...it just ends up sounding like a keyboard though since they play so fast. Just like a lot of people would say that all Halen does is tapping and a lof of the time he is pretty sloppy live, people would defend it saying well listen to these tracks and you will see what else he can do.these videos are popular for being so insane.

  • jesus christ man its a chromatic excercise used to practice picking technique what were you expecting

  • I see the same thing in EVERY single video. Back and forth, up and down. No melody. If you like this "music". Good for you. I think it is a very limiting way of playing stuff that is limitless.

Yes I have seen his "songs", same damn thing. You guys will grow up outgrow this phase someday. A lot like kids in the early 80's who used to breakdance. It's nice and flashy, but it is not music to listen to seriously. If you can sit and listen to this for hours. You might need rehab.

  • I never said anything about liking boring lifeless shredding, rusty cooley has some pretty good riffs n things with outworld but his solo stuff is generally pretty dull. I don't see why you have to be so condescending about it

  • Just trying to talk a little sense into you guys. You seem to understand what I'm saying. Cheers.

  • yea I see what you mean, I think one of the best things about learning guitar is when you first hear all these cray shredders playing impossible stuff and want to see how close you can get to that, but even while doing this most guitarists with any creative potential should realise that its kinda missing the point

  • that's your opinion dudes like frank gambale and shawn lane can shred harder than anyone else but they had/have soul and can express more in one note than most musicians in an entire song maybe even album

  • My point is. His "songs" are just like his "excercise's".

  • Some of them are. The thing is. This is a chromatic exercise. His songs, while utilizing a lot of his techniques, are in actual scales. Besides that, you obviously haven't heard his album all the way through... There are a lot of parts with geat feel and "slow" bits. To say that all his songs are exercises is asenine.

  • All the ones I have seen on youtube are just alike.

  • ...Because on youtube his lessons and example songs get posted a lot. Don't complain until you hear his album or OUTWORLD's album.

  • @ yngvaibucketrucci: dig that username!

  • its a chromatic exercise

not supposed to have any binds or phazing

    Feeling is not important

you can play melodies without it

  • You do know this is a lesson... Right?

  • Yeah I know. Have you seen his "songs". Trouble is they don't know how to separate the two.

  • you learn dude's techniques on Fret12's media page. take a look!

  • Rusty Owns Govan Harsh!

  • he looks bored when he's playing it slow lol.

  • and constipated while playign fast lol

  • Rusty crushes all!!!!

  • rusty cooley is too much haha

  • i hope no1 is picking like this besides him, you'll all get carpel tunnel in ur wrists I sware to whatever god you believe in

  • what? how what

  • This guy is a shred GOD! They are so fucking clean and neat!!!!!!

  • HOLY CRAP rusty allways impress me!

  • Rusty's thinking in his mind, "Man, what am I going to have for dinner.....I hope pizza......Did I leave the sink on again?......"

  • fucking awesome

  • He looks bored as shit.

  • By the way you must be really good cuz my guitar teacher is amazing and he recemmended i check your videos out. Nice work.

  • As far as technique goes, you can't really go past Rusty Cooley in my opinion, He's amazing.

  • well there is al di meola, Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane.

  • without going into some of the Jazz/Fusion stuff (like Lane, Holdsworth, McLaughlin, etc.) you are correct, Cooley has mastered everything technique-wise up to that point. but there is another level above Rusty that includes such players as Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Marshall Harrison, Al Di Meola, Guthrie Govan, and a few more.

  • Shawn Lane and Holdsworth yes, but I wouldn't say the rest.

  • You do know who john Mclaughlin is don't you? He's freaking amazing.

  • OK, you got me. I haven't listened to McLaughlin or Marshall Harrison. But I stand by my claim that RC can play nearly everything GG or Di Meola can, and can probably play some things that the others can't.

  • Lol you're saying Rusty is better then Guthrie Govan?

    Hahaha

  • No, I'm saying their both roughly on the same technical level. Musically, I like GG much more, but I don't think there are many things that GG can play that Rusty can't, and vice versa.

  • Oh right, I agree with you on that one..

  • Oh god, I confused they're and their. FUCK.

  • You guys are morons and talk about completly irrelevent topics. A topic that would be relevent however is to compliment Rusty's skill.

  • its funny how he looks while playing fast

  • Er, it's not supposed to be, it's a chromatic lesson, when will people get that. Not everything you play on an instrument is a melodic song.

  • Er its from Chromatic Death which I do believe is a Colley Song and a song should be melodic. Wanker

  • Chromatic Death is a guitar lesson by Cooley as far as I know, not a song.

  • u forgot the Er

  • ER...........

  • lol dude, thats not a song. haha

  • funny hahaahahahaha

  • Although, that sounds like it would be a bad ass Cooley song.

  • Nope, a chromatic scale is a scale with all of the notes usually ranging in octaves. And this isn't a song you dumbass, it's a LESSON from an instuctional dvd.

  • chromatic means all the notes, if it were meant to be melodic it wouldn't be chromatic

  • ur a fag
