@DocterRictofenn If you want an animal that eats rodents, get snakes. They are not good for lizards. I recommend sticking to healthy crickets or dubia roaches. The sacrifice of nutrition for the "coolness" of a lizard eating a pinkie is not worth it, trust me. Get a snake if you want to feed rodents to an animal.

@comanderkuddles -- they can go quite a while without eating -- if their tail is fat, which is where they store fat, they'll be fine. One of mine went almost a month without eating and still going strong. When I go on long trips, I give them one pinky just before so they can last a while.

@comanderkuddles Your gecko probably will be fine, but there may be an underlying problem. Do you have a thermometer to check the hot and cool ends of the enclosure? If the hot side doesn't exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the cool side doesn't stay at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, then this could cause a lack of digestion, causing your pet not to eat. If there is sand in the enclosure, this can cause "impaction" which blocks the Gastrointestinal tract which causes an animal not to eat.
@dragongirl413 yea they are both fine now; i reently moved them into a 20 long with an exoterra self waterer and vines and stuff to walk on, i will upload a vid soon of it, so subscribe if you wan to know when its up. theterrarium was to cold because the uth was not sticking anymore, but i got a new uth and i use a heat lamp too, so now they are eating fine

Iv found that its fine to put them on sand, as long as you dont feed them in there tanks. Iv had mine for 9 years and its still perfectly find. shes happy and healthy. And shes always been on sand. But i do agree you shouldnt feed them on sand because of it getting inpacted in there tummys. And id never put a baby gecko on sand ether.
@horsesoccergirl22 -- I didn't know about this issue then, but learned it shortly after. Though I think Baseera has an iron gut as sometimes there may be a little sand that gets on her thawed out crickets and she's never had any impaction issues (she's 7 now).

@WolfNGecko theres no particular age just make sure the pinky is smaller enough for the leo to eat, leopard geckos have week jaws so i dont think they could chew a very big pinky, and you should feed pinkys to females that are gunna lay eggs pinkys probly weekly so they can build up more fat

Its mean to have them eat a pinkie cause its a cute little baby mouse rat ect but crickets they will just throw in no prob and think nothing of it.. Kinda dumb way of thinking if you ask me right? Things gotta eat!

@ZephyrsBell thats the way i think if the mouse is alive, if its a thawed one, then its ok, but baby mice are much more sensitive to pain than crickets or any other feeder insect, thats probably the reasoning behind all the complaints

There's no wrong when an animal eats another animal. Animals have no comprehension of right and wrong, no morals, no ethics. They just eat, or die.

@deektedrgg yea, but geckos eat insects and arachnids not rodents, some species might eat rodents, but thi species does, now dont get me wrong, feeding them pinkies is good to put on some weight and for a good treat, but since htey dont ea them in the wild, then i prefer using frozen ones

Iv found that its fine to put them on sand, as long as you dont feed them in there tanks. Iv had mine for 9 years and its still perfectly find. shes happy and healthy. And shes always been on sand. But i do agree you shouldnt feed them on sand because of it getting inpacted in there tummys. And id never put a baby gecko on sand ether.

@horsesoccergirl22 -- I didn't know about this issue then, but learned it shortly after. Though I think Baseera has an iron gut as sometimes there may be a little sand that gets on her thawed out crickets and she's never had any impaction issues (she's 7 now).

@extjerry actually no it isnt to big if it were to big it would have spit it out already, the reason it was taking so long and chewing so much is so that it breaks up the bones so it can swallow the mouse easier and digest it easier

@Reptyler14 There's too many stupid stubborn people in the world. You tell them something and no matter how true it is, they would rather keep their animal on sand because it looks nice. Another not on calcium sand though... it's calcium carbonate, something we humans use as an antacid but aren't supposed to take for more than 2 weeks. If humans can't ingest it repeatedly then why the hell should our pets be kept on it for years? Pets are living beings, not decorations.

all of these comments saying "geckos should only eat dead food in captivity, but can eat whatever live food they want in the wild" sounds a lot like this argument:"people cant eat cow in the house, but if they stumble upon a cow in the woods, theyre free to eat it."
You all need to chill, he can feed the gecko whatever he wants, and pet stores sell (and recommend, i might add) the occasional feeding of LIVE pinkies (in addition to live insects. pre killed, freezedried, and frozen lose nutrition

@WolfNGecko theres no particular age just make sure the pinky is smaller enough for the leo to eat, leopard geckos have week jaws so i dont think they could chew a very big pinky, and you should feed pinkys to females that are gunna lay eggs pinkys probly weekly so they can build up more fat

@monkeyman410, @WolfNGecko, i have read that if you want to be sure you can feed your leopard gecko something look at its head. if the food is smaller than the head its usually ok to feed it but if not i would be careful.

@ccwe23 I'm getting sick of the "it happens in the wild" bullshit there is nothing natural about terrarium life, in the wild the pinkie would have a mother defending it, and the gecko would be at risk every day from predators itself. Most designer morphs would be easy pickings in the wild. and I didn't see anything in the title about a live pinky, it's not like frozen ones are a scarce commodity

i have my gecko on sand to..But i always put him in a seperate pin to feed...And there has never been anything proven that sand kills geckos...They live on it in the wild. They are already in captivity, and now you want them to have nothing to do with where they came from..Well your cool...Its fine to have them on sand...
