Well, you do have to realize that the Jedi had believed that the Sith had been extinct for a thousand years. They never expected to meet one in battle, so training to fight them must have fallen out of practice in the Order. Jedi were never very good at fight Sith in the first place, as seen in the Jedi Civil War, where hundreds of Jedi died, or fell to the Dark side by the hand of simple Dark Jedi trained by Sith.
