I thought the movie was a better presentation of the Watchmen. For one it gives the characters more emotion and it shows a better example of what life would be like for vigilantes.
For anyone who hasn't. buy the director's cut, it has-Spoiler Alert-the death of the original Nite Owl. It's twenty minutes of extra footage. And they spread it out well they'd add a few seconds to scens here and there. Just add a few lines or if it's showing a room or city show a few extra signs. Like for instance when Dan Dreiberg iswalking back from Hollis Mason's house they added in a Nostalgia billboard
I think they left out Holis's death, but I'm not sure, it's been a while since I've seen it.
Personally, I don't care much for the movie, I believe it was a little overhyped, but not as much as TDK, but I like the comic, not enough to be a huge fan of it, though.
I thought the ending of the movie to be good I mean it works for a movie and if they used the comic book it wouldn't work becasue as Kev said it would destroy and credibility the movie had going for it
How? If Dr. Manhatten was the 'threat' to unify against then what's keeping them together after he leaves for another Galaxy? It makes NO sense. Also, at the time of the 'attack' he was on Mars, he made a point of telling people he was on Mars.
Protip: Dr. Manhatten can go anywhere instantly, he is an omnipotent threat to the people of earth. Furthermore the world leaders and the people do not know he has left the galaxy, only the remaining watchmen know. Did you watch the film?
Protip: The scope of Dr.Manhattens powers is never truely touched upon,I think after a while of not seeing him they'd get the fucking point. You can't unite against something that isn't there.
The ending of watchmen doesn't imply everlasting peace, however, in either the comic or the movie. All it does is prevent nuclear holocaust. So I guess we are both (partly) correct.
My toughts on the movie is that, it´s a goo movie but it´s not the best comic book movie of all-times, it doens´t trully amkes justice to it. It´s the best adaptation posible, yet it only shows it is an inadaptable comic. Don´t get me wrong i liked it, but it´s not what it should be.
The Watchmen is basically a character study of the interplay between various world views with the plot of a murder mystery/whodunit set in a world with a super-human and masked vigilantes running around changing history.
I actually got my hopes up about the movie after seeing the previews. They tried to make a movie adaptation with the same formula that worked so well for 300 and Sin City. That is, panel-by-panel, line-by-line. That worked great for the other two movies, which were short enough and simple enough, but here they cut out whole chunks of dialogue! (And newspaper clippings, The Black Freighter, etc.) This left me very disappointed, and my friends (who hadn't read the book) very confused.
because of the ending having no squid there was no reason for Bubastis to be there. the whole reason for his exsistance was that they could create the squid sucsesfully...
I agree. It was better that they decided to change the ending a bit in order to make it more plausible. A applaud them for the great adaptation, almost everything else in the movie is 100% accurate to the comic book down to the lines. Great effort. I don't know about the fanboys, but I was pleased with the film.
Hey Dcompose, one of your biggest fans here... I watched the movie, and thought it was great. My only beef though is that Silk Spectre, is basically depicted as a slut. She spent the entire movie screwing Nite Owl, and wishing she was screwing Dr. Manhattan. Other than that, it was a pretty good flick.
yea i was very surprised they came up with an ending that actually made sense to the story. i was very pleased with this movie and i am a HUGE fan of the book. i still would have liked to see the squid though. i think if they properly explained, it could have worked in the movie but i get wat u mean kev bout how it could hurt the ratings
A giant squid-like monster would've destroyed the movie's credibility?....Who are you to say what works and what doesn't work in a movie adaptation? It's purely conjecture. That's an arrogant, shallow thing to say... SoD is alive and well... If that's what you think then perhaps this movie shouldn't have made to begin with ... If you really think that this superhero movie era is immune to consequences in years yet to come b/c we're so great, then enjoy living in the world of flat
Sounds like you're the greatest expert in making a good adaptation in American Cinema buddy.....How about pitching Warner Bros for a Mutants and Masterminds movie? Who knows? It might be a box office triumph,,, you'll be envy of all your idols...including your lord and master Zack Snyder bowing down to your prescence. You'll have the power of a 'god' all these things considered in the realm of flats and shadows.
You have no evidence to support your statement on me being a fanboy. You are blatantly attacking me for stating how you seem to be going around stating that he doesn't know what works in an adaptation, which insinuates that you yourself does know in a complaining tone. Which means that you are a fanboy, not me.
i saw the movie the other day, i wasnt a fan of the book and i guess im immature but i busted out laughing every time i saw nixon,s nose or manhatton's dong. the guy who played rawrshack was a damn good actor and he was my fav character in the movie
I liked the ending because it remineded me of Einstein's discoveries of the atom being used for a tragic occurance (Hiroshia/Nagasaki) against his original intentions, in the name of 'peace'.
I saw the movie for the second time today and I have to say that I loved it and looked past certain graphic aspects of it. Rorshach was really my favorite character as probably was with most. I didn't read the comic book, and I did want to, but I understood the plot pretty well.
At the theater I went to, about three people left halfway through the film out of eight. This one guy couldn't stand the blood and really just stomped out. Didn't give it a chance.
Omg its like you read my mind everything you said is what i was thinking when i left the movie. Rorshach is my favorite. and i liked the acting except for sally jupiter as an old woman. it came off so exajerated.
I loved the film. And about Nixon's nose. When Nixon said "What are we going to do?" , A guy behind me sad, "He's gonna sniff everything up". I almost loled in the theatre, but kept myself from it.
The film went no where near as deep as the book did. Every scene was fast paced with the actor's dialogue coming out just as fast. Manhattan being made into a Bruce Banner character and having his scenes on Mars being cut to about 3 minutes long was the worst thing done to the movie. Come on director's cut.
both the watchmen and the dark knight were good in their own respective ways, they were both good at what they individualy were trying to accomplish,i personaly dont think i could say any one was better than the other
i saw film i enjoyed it it was even with the dark knight others would disagree but thats my opionion i liked the ending the film more than the book its self.
Couldn't agree more. This was a wonderful interpretation and the only people complaining evidentially have NO respect for what a large undertaking this was. Just imagine a giant squid showing up for the last 20 minutes, works in the book not on the screen.
haha yh i noticed the thing with nixon's nose, i thought it looked massive too. ive seen the film and liked it alot, i had read some of the book at the point when watched the film and saw the that the source material was almost directly taken to the screen which was awesome. im continuing to read the book and am seeing more similarities.
one line i missed at the end of the movie from the graphic novel is when ozymandaus asks dr.manhhattan "so i did it right,i brought about world peace, its over right?" to which dr.manhhattan responds "its over...nothing ever ends, goodbye adrian" to which a baffled adrian responds "what do you mean!"....instead this sequence is thrown in "subtly by silk specter to night owl which i dont think did the line justice...
one thing that was missing that wished was in there was the murder of hollis, the first night owl. but besides that this is one of my favourite movies.!!
i totally agree with you DCompose. I loved the comic book and i was super excited to see the movie. I went and saw it with some buddies who never read the book. and i told them you might not get, and they thought they were gonna be fine. they said they like dark knight so the would like this. So while i was sitting there getting my mind fucking blown. they were wondering who the hell the villian was. so when the movie was over i had to spend like 30 minutes explianing to them
i told agree with you kev on the ending of the watchmen. but what sucks was i wasn't able to read the comic before i saw the movie. but i saw the watchmen on friday and i understood everything. i found the watchmen to be better then the dark knight but that my opinon. i think the dark knight just had shit blowing up. unlike the watchmen where you got to know the charicters. so all i got to say is the watchmen was beast and this review was beast.
i'm not trying to say that the dark knight was all shirt blowing up. i got the messege from the movie. that all the good you do there will still be someone who hates you fo what you do. i'm just saying that i liked the watchmen more bc it show that not everyone is perfect not even superheros.
Agree on the ending adjustment, i didnt expect the movie to be so good, im glad the movie was long enough to tell the story and was not compressed like SM3.
I still don't know if i'm going to see this. It looks cool, but then again, i didn't like the original story. What do you guys think, should I, as a non fan of the original, give this a chance???
Great Posting!! I saw today after reading the book and I must say it was great. I totally agree with you on the ending, I thought it was way more fitting. The part that I wish they hadn't change was the way Roarshac kills the petophile. I never really approved of the squid in the story, but who am I to criticize Moores vision. The squid seem to come out of no where in the story. Other than that, the book is a wonderful read. TY
I read so much negative feedback about the ending, I walked in to the movie expecting to hate it. I did not hate the ending, and I agree with you, DCompse. The ending made sense for 2009. And again, the film makers did not change the ending, they just changed the way it happened. The comic is better, but the movie is enjoyable.
I haven't seen the film yet but I liked Johnathan Ross review on it. He enjoyed the film but some of the dialogue didnt really suite a live action film and should have stayed on the page. He mentions that it follows the graphic novel so much he would rather have seen a film that captured the spirit of it more, than seeing a graphic novel made word for word. .I hope Ill like the film though but I know where hes coming from when he said that.
At least they had the organization Ozymandias had to recreate Manhattan's power be called "SQUID". I thought the ending worked and the movie was very respectful to the comics.
I liked the movie... liked the new ending... But what I DIDN'T like was the lack of tension in the movie about nuclear war and the end of mankind! At no point did I feel as if New York was gonna be attacked soon, we didn't see anybody really in the streets talking and being nervous like in the comic book... So I think they should've had a lil' bit more of that! Other than that RORSCHACH was AWESOME =D!!!
Never knew about Watchmen until the announcement of the movie being made then got the Graphic Novel, which I consider one of the most engrossing reads ever, and the Movie emulated this perfectly albeit with a few changes but only the most anally retentive fanboys would take umbridge to that. Grow up boys. Zack Snyder nailed this adaption to be possibly THE best adaption ever put on screen in the history of cinema.
HEY Kevin after your review it made me wanna watch the Watchmen movie although i have never read about him in the DC comics well ive heard of him just that never really took him into place never got to know his character but i will so thanks xD and i like the way you said his nose is WAAAAAAAY TOO BIG haha
I agree with the ending of the movie - way more believable. Sadly, much back story was left out (obvious reasons). The entire setting (hypothetical world of the 70s 80s where vigilantes/heroes are a normal within society and the consequences of such) of the movie was quite under developed.
I watched the movie with my sister who hasn't read the comic. She said she understood it, but didn't really connect with the characters.
Veidt came-off as self-indulgent prick while NiteOwl was a bit flat.
I like this video. You're cool! Are you going to do a review on Wolverine origin (Xmen)? I heard many people say Wolverine is the best character in comic books. Any chance for a 101 on Wolverine? Thanks
No, the fight scene wasn't shown int he book, but it did happen, so it was logical to put it in the movie. The mobster thing was a cinematic way to summarize some of Jon's story and what his existence... this superman... would be like; so it still meshed with the book fine.
good review... haven't seen it yet but looking forward to seeing a different ending than whats in the book.
I fast-fwd'd thru the spoiler -- but was surprised there wasn't a mention of Dr. Manhattan's schlong... I've heard more mention of that than Nixon's nose.
dr manhattan's schlong isn't a big deal. It's not the focus of any scene, it's just there. Pretty much like going to an art museum and seeing a penis in a statue or painting. Anyone who made a big deal about it probably has some issues.
And the latex crap all over the face of the guy playing nixon was ridiculous. It wasn't just his nose, his entire face looked like it was covered in plastic and all out of proportion.
I like the movie the only things that Confess me is why the hell did they have their 10yr old kids in the dam theater. did nobody see the rating on this movie WTF? you know people are going to complain about because they did not read the rating and cause some trouble.
I know, right? I went here and I saw a family with 4 kids that were younger then 10, maybe 7 or 8. As soon as the violence and the sex scens came on I heard the parents say 'Close your eyes honey' and 'Don't look'. 1 of them even screamed. I though 'I did you bring them here! Its R not G.'
Rorschach's therapist sessions were cut into one short session and it made it hard for people to really soak up his character.
Nite-Owl find out about Rorschach's death and beats up Ozy. It feels out of character. In the book, he accepted what Ozy was doing and compromised with Laurie. Had he learned about R, he'd probably think "Oh no Rorschach, you should've given up" something like that and go on.
Other than that, Hollis Mason and the 2 Bernies, but they're in the Director's cut.
First of all, it's not like they substituted the squi for something completely different. The ending obviously fit better with the film and would minimize confusion of a monster squid. Plus, you wouldn't have to explain the whole story about the island and the artists if you leave out the squid.
However, I still wanted to see it. I felt like it represented absurdity in the novel and it should in the film too. But it wasn't a big deal and Watchmen was still great
3). The initial portrayal of Oxymandis. The film immediately made him out to be the "bad guy". In the novel I felt that he was initially portrayed as a bit egotistical, but also as a bit insecure and as someone who didn't want to get in the way of drama. Obviously, by process of elimination, you can figure out he's the "villain", but in the film, they make him out to be evil from the jump, in my opinion.
"Who watches the Watchmen? DCompose watches the Watchmen." Hell yeah buddy.

True that. Manhattan knows much more about consequences than anyone else. That's his most important line and they gave it away.

one thing that was missing that wished was in there was the murder of hollis, the first night owl. but besides that this is one of my favourite movies.!!

i totally agree with you DCompose.

I agree about the ending. The alien wouldn't have worked.

i forgot to say that im read the comic now

i told agree with you kev on the ending of the watchmen. but what sucks was i wasn't able to read the comic before i saw the movie. but i saw the watchmen on friday and i understood everything. i found the watchmen to be better then the dark knight but that my opinon. i think the dark knight just had shit blowing up. unlike the watchmen where you got to know the charicters. so all i got to say is the watchmen was beast and this review was beast.
StHeaglesfan 3 years ago
if you thought that all the dark knight was is "sh*t blowing up,you totaly missed the message behind the movie...
DARQUEknight07 3 years ago
i'm not trying to say that the dark knight was all shirt blowing up. i got the messege from the movie. that all the good you do there will still be someone who hates you fo what you do. i'm just saying that i liked the watchmen more bc it show that not everyone is perfect not even superheros.
StHeaglesfan 3 years ago
to rite man. Im a fan, i read the comic book ages ago and this film is amazin with the real super hero situation
cmdusty01 3 years ago
yah the watchmen brings you into the world and it feels like you are really there

Agree on the ending adjustment, i didnt expect the movie to be so good, im glad the movie was long enough to tell the story and was not compressed like SM3.
only complaint was the music in the movie.

only 1 complaint about the movie:DR. MANHATTEN NEEDS TO PUT ON SOME PANTS! lol

I still don't know if i'm going to see this. It looks cool, but then again, i didn't like the original story. What do you guys think, should I, as a non fan of the original, give this a chance???
Spideyfan117 3 years ago
Probably not, as it stays pretty close to the source material.

TY

happyface4444 3 years ago
I read so much negative feedback about the ending, I walked in to the movie expecting to hate it. I did not hate the ending, and I agree with you, DCompse. The ending made sense for 2009. And again, the film makers did not change the ending, they just changed the way it happened. The comic is better, but the movie is enjoyable.

I think directors try to please fan boys too much rather than create a film than copy it word for word off the page.
nukem11 3 years ago

When I heard you say "DCompose watches the Watchmen", it made me lol. Great review, man! :)
Eric032289 3 years ago
Great Fucking Movie man....just great.
Alan Moore is an ass for dissing it.

kinda dissapointed with the 'no pirate story' thing, but ive heard its gonna be an extra on the dvd or something so im happy.
oh yea, if you look closely you can see the cameo of the black kid reading the pirate story and the newspaper guy. that put a smile on my face :)
lmao at the nixon nose thing, yea i was like that too.

the pirate story is in animation and it's out on dvd now.

Dr. Manhattan had to do it so Rorschach wouldn't mess up all of the world coming together to do something about it.

true but still rorschach & comedian are my favorite
randomfilmsTV 3 years ago
I agree with the ending of the movie - way more believable. Sadly, much back story was left out (obvious reasons). The entire setting (hypothetical world of the 70s 80s where vigilantes/heroes are a normal within society and the consequences of such) of the movie was quite under developed.
I watched the movie with my sister who hasn't read the comic. She said she understood it, but didn't really connect with the characters.
Veidt came-off as self-indulgent prick while NiteOwl was a bit flat.
arachnid15 3 years ago
I like this video. You're cool! Are you going to do a review on Wolverine origin (Xmen)? I heard many people say Wolverine is the best character in comic books. Any chance for a 101 on Wolverine? Thanks

question for you kev. I saw the movie and i have never read the comic. I'm wondeirng ifthe comic was as violent with blood as the movie was.
CockyPotocky 3 years ago
no. not really. like that part where dan splits that guy's elbow open... didn't happen. same with the 2 mobsters that jon blows up. u should read it.
BestDamnThing254 3 years ago
No, the fight scene wasn't shown int he book, but it did happen, so it was logical to put it in the movie. The mobster thing was a cinematic way to summarize some of Jon's story and what his existence... this superman... would be like; so it still meshed with the book fine.
lolasdmf 3 years ago
good review... haven't seen it yet but looking forward to seeing a different ending than whats in the book.
I fast-fwd'd thru the spoiler -- but was surprised there wasn't a mention of Dr. Manhattan's schlong... I've heard more mention of that than Nixon's nose.
you2449 3 years ago
Wow, I thought I was the only one that noticed how F'ED up Nixon's nose looked...
What the hell was up with that honker?
VenomProject 3 years ago 2
dr manhattan's schlong isn't a big deal. It's not the focus of any scene, it's just there. Pretty much like going to an art museum and seeing a penis in a statue or painting. Anyone who made a big deal about it probably has some issues.
And the latex crap all over the face of the guy playing nixon was ridiculous. It wasn't just his nose, his entire face looked like it was covered in plastic and all out of proportion.
prisoner1138 3 years ago
Edward Fox as Oz would have been perfect. That was the only miscast in the movie in my opinion.
jeffwads 3 years ago
One of the best flicks in my opinion. 4 viewings only strengthens that view. It has some questionable scenes, but nothing is perfect.

I like the movie the only things that Confess me is why the hell did they have their 10yr old kids in the dam theater. did nobody see the rating on this movie WTF? you know people are going to complain about because they did not read the rating and cause some trouble.
Kmation 3 years ago 2
I know, right? I went here and I saw a family with 4 kids that were younger then 10, maybe 7 or 8. As soon as the violence and the sex scens came on I heard the parents say 'Close your eyes honey' and 'Don't look'. 1 of them even screamed. I though 'I did you bring them here! Its R not G.'
ss3kid 3 years ago
Rorschach's therapist sessions were cut into one short session and it made it hard for people to really soak up his character.
Nite-Owl find out about Rorschach's death and beats up Ozy. It feels out of character. In the book, he accepted what Ozy was doing and compromised with Laurie. Had he learned about R, he'd probably think "Oh no Rorschach, you should've given up" something like that and go on.
Other than that, Hollis Mason and the 2 Bernies, but they're in the Director's cut.
JoeNostalgiaReturns 3 years ago
HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE ENDING
First of all, it's not like they substituted the squi for something completely different. The ending obviously fit better with the film and would minimize confusion of a monster squid. Plus, you wouldn't have to explain the whole story about the island and the artists if you leave out the squid.
However, I still wanted to see it. I felt like it represented absurdity in the novel and it should in the film too. But it wasn't a big deal and Watchmen was still great
Yanirakarola 3 years ago
MY BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH THE FILM
