  • a stump grinder is more effective tim

  • @flynnlandscaping This video was to show but *one* way to remove stumps. That's the bottom line.

  • @AsktheBuilder yeah ur right and the rental is easier i got a question can u do a vid showing the differences between compact tractors like Massey Ferguson and John Deere and Kubota im thinking about one for my business and just cant find the differences

  • @flynnlandscaping Yes, I can do that video. But you need to help. You contact all those companies, tell them about me, tell them they need to get the equipment to me, the model #s, etc. so it's a fair comparison and do all the logistics. When the tractors are up on my land at the same time, I'll show up with my video camera and create the video. Be sure you arrange for all the tractors to be picked up when I'm done.

  • stump grinders don't keep the roots from making suckers from sprouting.

  • @emigrantgap Roots will sprout only if you don't grind them with the stump.

  • well i guess if i wanna go to the moon i just rent a shuttle and with a few instructions i'll be there in no time

  • Great tips, thanks for the video. We have a large stump in our backyard we need to remove.

  • First, that's not a backhoe. It's an excavator. A backhoe has a bucket on the front and a backhoe attachment on the back, which is what is called a backhoe.

Second, excavators are made for excavation, which fits stump removal. Dig around the stump, break all the roots and then pull it out. Simple and effective.

  • 2 sticks of tovex and 1/2 sec works for me. Use the scraps for fire wood. Cost= $2.15 tovex $0.80 blasting cap

  • let's see... rent 2 large pieces of equipment and tear up everything in sight, and then deal with a bunch of huge, heavy, dirty stumps... OR rent or hire a stump grinding company and clean up the chips with a rale and shovel...

  • @murphy4trees Yes, we've already discussed this in other comments on this video. This video just shows another method.

  • @murphy4trees This isn't for removing 1 stump from your front yard... this is for removing stumps after you've cleared a patch of land.

  • Can't you just use KNO3 Stump Remover?

  • Take a water hose and soak stumps before you try to remove them by hand. It may take a long time for them to rot so leave the water on and dig around exposing the roots. Its an old fashion way but it works.

  • if u have a good bit of time u can use stump remover(potassium nitrate) to decompose the stump. obviously if u want it done in a day just rent a stump grinder and it completely get rid of it. that would be way to much work to rent that big machinery and go through the trouble to transport it and stuff.

  • @0.12 thats a spade not a shovel, ask a builder.

  • Grinding a stump with a professional stump grinder is a much more efficient way to remove a stump, especially in gardens, where damage needs to be kept to a minimum.

  • Think green, hire a bunch of termites...will work for food.

  • Calling a stump grinder is faster and cheaper, the only time I recommend digging up stumps, is if a pool is going where the stump was, or if the stump has grown into a metal fence post, or over a sidewalk, or drive way etc.

And digging up stumps makes a BIG MESS and a BIG HOLE in your yard and your wallet, and not to mention a BIG STUMP to haul off!!!

  • Sounds so easy, but it's not. Using a backhoe on large stumps is a real good way ruin a backhoe. Then you've got to get rid of the stump. That's not always easy to do, depending on the situation. I've been grinding stumps for 15 years with my Vermeer and it works by far better than a backhoe in most situations.

  • Grinding is a great alternative. No doubt about that. This just shows an alternative method. Disposing of the stumps is indeed problematic.

  • @AsktheBuilder how many acres have you got?

  • @eastonsteve shutup you complete idiot you dont have a clue

  • actually tha fastest way is get a super front loader insted of a bucket attach a levco 4 foot carbide 2ooo tooth drum grinder to it rev up the super japan diesel n your 20 foot redwood stump is gone in about 2 minutes at about half throttle..of course if you choose to use the largest hydro demo claw and a super tub grinder but either way chipping n grinding with the super right tool is the fastest...levco drums are the largest n fastest

  • all you need is a backhoe like a johndeere 310 no need for 2 pieces of equipment.

  • but who would own does tractors?

  • You rent them by the day.

  • C-4 or TNT would be more fun.

  • Poor way of getting rid of stumps. Pretty easy to tear up a backhoe digging out a stump when for $100-200 you can grind it out. But it all depends on the situation.

  • I agree that a grinder can be an effective tool.

  • $50 for 4 hours at home depot for a grinder. Not expensive. I did 6 in my yard and got it back in under 4 hrs.

  • i used a backhoe

  • I need to get me a digger!!

  • now i know u are not from the East Coast saying "digger"!!!

    Its an EXCAVATOR!

  • And some others call it a track hoe. It's absolutely can be a regional preference.

  • you are completely and utterly right my friend! New England operators call it an excavator but down south and out west is different termanology for certain heavy equipment.

  • i call it a back hoe actually, here in boston.

  • Its a digger excavator its a shovel WHAT EVER it digs holes why does it matter?

  • excavator/backhoe pulls towards machine a shovel digs away... think of a shovel... there you go. lmao

  • i was thinking the same thing!

  • You should have your own TV show Tim.

  • Thanks but no thanks. I prefer to lay in the weeds and stick my head up every now and then.

  • Why not just use a stick of dynamite?

  • You need a special permit to buy it.

  • i love that every video begins with him screaming, "Ugh, look how hard this is going to be!!!!!!"

  • Thanks! That's because often it's the truth. Just yesterday I taped a video about installing ceramic floor tile. After the camera was off I had the videographer try it. He struggled to spread the thinset and keep the spacing equal between the tiles. Digging a stump out by hand with a shovel would be extremely difficult as we all know.

  • I could well wreck everything in sight this way!

  • You know that grinding the stump is faster and cheaper, the only time I recommend digging up stumps, is if a pool is going where the stump was, and if the stump has grown into a metal fence post, or over a sidewalk, or drive way ect.

And digging up stumps makes a BIG MESS and a BIG HOLE to fill.

  • Black powder's more fun. ;-)

  • good day mate, type in redroo or red roo on the you tube url and watch what the red roo can do. Nice effort on your video.

  • Good day! We have those grinders here in the USA. Amazing tools they are! I just saw something even better I think. You take the bucket off the excavator I show in this video. In its place you install this giant single claw that is about 3-inches wide. Just like an animal claw. You take a swipe on either side of the stump, each action taking about 5 seconds. Then you grab the stump using the claw and thumb on the machine. Rips large stumps out in about 20 seconds.

  • A frost ripper does work well for stump removal but it can be awkward for the larger stumps. I clear a lot of land with a 22 tonne excavator and I almost exclusively use a 60" root rake. Like the pick it cuts the roots making the stump easy to grab, but it also has the added benefit of being able to gather up and sift out the cut roots as well. The 2 most useful attachments you need for stumping, is a digging bucket and a rake. Ripper tooth is useful too if you want to dig a hole and bury stumps

  • Thanks! That's a great tip. I became aware of the tool you're talking about two months ago. I intend to tape a video showing this wonderful single-claw tool ripping out stumps. It would be great if you could tape a video of what you're describing as well. We all would love to see your machine!

  • Actually, just look at my most recent video. It is not of stumping, but of the last stage of fencerow removal cleaning up the last of the roots and stones, but it shows the rake. I've never gotten around to filming me working in the bush ripping trees out. Guess that will have to wait for next year.

  • YNOT ! HAHA Gosh I luv the ideas on youtube LOL. Nice vid and nice landscaping.

  • That shovel would have done the job eventually.

  • Rent two machines?? Get real!! Then you have to pay for trucking, fuel prices, dumb!!

Stump grinder for 1/4 of the price!

  • It helps if you read the other comments. The machines were used for other things at the jobsite.

  • ya know something tim? You sure do catch a lot of crap from these know-it-alls.

  • Yep, it goes with the territory. When you put your neck on the line as I do in these videos, expect it to be chopped at. There are many who provide helpful comments, but the jealous faceless haters are the most frustrating. No worries as I have thick skin.

  • My parents had some old cedar stumps on their property for years. I just dug out underneath the roots and packed the holes with charcoal briquettes and dried leaves. I then gave them a spray of charcoal lighter fluid and lit it on fire. It burnt about 24 hours and when it went out a clean hole about a foot deep was left. I packed it with dirt and seeded with grass seed.

  • lol i forgot everyone owns a backho, what was i thinking

  • Why make a huge mess and rent TWO machines?...why not rent a small 4 wheeled stump grinder and grind them down under the surface....your way:a waste of money+ a big mess.

But if you're handy with din-a-mite...........lol

  • That is indeed a decent option. In my case, we used the tracked excavator to move downed logs as well as dig some ditches. The skid-steer loader was used to help fill some holes and grade an access road.

  • Lol if you name was Tim Taylor then all the home improvent things you did would be destroyed.

  • or you could get a backhoe, then u only need 1 machine

  • That is true to a point. The largest stumps could not be scooped up by the skid-steer loader. They had to be dropped into the bucket. But I agree, a backhoe is a great machine. The loader in this situation was doing all sorts of other work while the trackhoe was digging. Nothing was ever idle.

  • Why not use a stump grinder ????

  • I had other uses for the equipment and wanted to show that way. A grinder is indeed another alternative.

  • i have and thats the point ... i'm a joiner/carpenter and use tradition methods of construction using hammer, hand saws and planes .....most people that view this are the DIY'ers ..do they really need to go and buy one of those concrete mixers for a 5 minute job .... do they really need to have one of those mobile workshops that need a V8 engine to move the weight .... reminds me of tim the toolman taylor where horse power is king of the hill and the enviroment is a distant thought.

  • oh yea --lets just kill off the entire rain forest - we all just happened to have $300 000 worth off earth moving equipment at hand.

  • Isn't that a little extreme? I am simply clearing some of my land to build a home....... And you need to realize that I am aggressively planting more trees. I plant ten for every one I cut down.

  • No...i've noticed that for almost every job you do ,you have some gas guzzling machine to do the job for you. (eg mixing concrete ??????)

  • You are being a little unreasonable. You need to watch more of my work. There are hundreds of videos where I use hand tools. Could you tell us more about yourself? I went to your channel and it is a vacuum. There is no information about who you are.

  • Hey, thanks for posting! I feel bad about all the unreal extreme environmentalist people bashing your videos and techniques. I'm sure most of them haven't actually spent much with nature. Anyway, great tips for stump removal! I know there is many other ways to get those stumps out, but using those mini excavators is sure a lot of fun! Have a good one!

  • Do you use gas when you drive? {your trailer)...

  • I suppose you live in a cave and walk around barefoot? Tell me, how do you power your mysterious cave computer? Heat from your bong turning a steam generator perhaps? Maybe there is a howto on joining the real world out there.

  • The guy had the equipment on hand making room for a house dumbass... In your other comment on gas, Don't you use gas in your car, I mean trailer?

  • " To trucked off, or decompose" In BC we burn them. With permit(Free). And we "hoe chuck" them in a pile. That way your Bobcat is not waiting for you to dig up roots. Secondly get a big machine that while rip it out without digging. Saves you money. Dont need the second machine.

Otherwise your video's are very good.

  • Great advice! Thanks for sharing.

  • Just like playing a video game.. =]

All your base are belong to us

  • Money well spent. It took me three hours last summer to dig out one Yew bush from my front yard! I think the blisters have finally healed :)

  • how much is it for the rent of those?

  • Call a local tool-rental shop.

  • Well how much did it cost you?

  • $200 US dollars per day in 2007 for each machine. The key is to work them 12-14 per day to make it really pay off.

  • That's great Tim. Around here (NJ) it's nearly that much just to rent a woodchipper for half a day.

    Thanks for the videos.

  • Show us how to do something usefull

  • Why don't you just hire a stump grinder?

  • We had other things we needed to do with that equipment. Removing stumps was just one aspect of what was done that week. Stump grinders do a magnificent job as well.

  • I am first to comment! :D

  • yeah!!!
