After any metal be it a coin, belt plate, or whatever has been in the ground for a long period of time, it's metal properties become unstable (on the surface). The "halo" created around the object comes from the metal leaching into the surounding soil. The surface of the coin can be softer than the core. That's the bases for my comment.
Wow, a few minutes of searching and you found a silver barber half from 1894. That´s awesome.
Often the best find of the day is the first one! Once I was searching on an old field here in Cologne/Germany and after 10 minutes of searching I found a medieval silver coin from the 13th century....an so called Cologne silver penny, minted under archbishop Conrad von Hochstaden in the year 1244 in nearly mint condition. That was the find of the day ;)
i'm guilty of rubbing my coins and i need to stop lol...lucky for me i just started detecting and havent found a good coin yet lol, my first day out and first thing i ever found was a 1936 wheat penny, and now i'm hooked lol
Iam no pro at metal detecting by a long shot. But the key to finding old coins is knowing what type of areas to look in! Your not going to find old coins at your local modern school yards in most cases. Do some research and history of what and where old inhabitants places long forgot and such !
I'm not being negative when I say this but why scratch the heck out of a coin with a dirt rub? Not for the dollar value, but for the historical value. Those coins wait for you for a long time. Be nice to them....
find anything out about that good luck token? It seems similar to others from the 40's i have seen. Appears to have been a persons name on it. From what i understand a machine would stamp the persons name surrounding the center "good luck".
do you think a ace 250 is a good one to use to find old coins? ive been hunting now for 8 months now and the oldest coin ive found was i belive 1950 penny, no such luck on silver or gold yet mostly just junk
Congratulations on your awesome hunt and cool finds. You certainly had some fantastic luck that day. Thanks for sharing and Good hunting for your next search :D
You can call it "dumb luck" or whatever you want. Congratulations. Who knows, maybe I just might get that lucky sometime. But an 1894 Barber Half is awesome to say the least.
You know, it does make sense to find more than 1 coin near the same spot. Imagine someone sitting in the grass, they have loose pants on or a hole in their pocket, boom out falls both of their coins.
my house was made in the 1700's. once when i was metal detecting around my house, i just looked on the ground because something caught my eye.then i relized it was a large cent.
It's very exciting to find old coins while metal detecting, but please carry an old toothbrush with you to field clean your coins and a squirt bottle with water will help too. By rubbing the old coins your scratching the shit out of them and killing the value of a potential rare coin. Your first reaction is to rub the coin to check type and year.
@jkoelj I have a Minelab SE Pro with the attached little detector is calld a "SunRay Inline Probe" (its broke though) so my buddy let me use his hand held detector called "Garrett Pinointer"
@TreasureFiend Sometimes long forgotten homesteads stand out from surrounding terrain by certain types of trees planted for shade or produce and tend to be in area where natural drainage and may not be any surviving evidence of structures. Homesteads also would have been located close to roads and of course some old country dirt roads were abandoned and became grown over and indistinguishable from surroundings Did you have any method for determining promising search area .
I can see both side to this. Most guys I know arn't fussed about the value of the coins they find. Its more about the hunt and finding cool things. But it is painful to see sometimes. Great Video's by the way treasure fiend. Thanks
@marxplastic2011 I carry some olive oil in a little jar with me for old coppers and buttons when I detect - stops all the surface from flaking off as soon as it hits the air - I dont sell anything either, but no reason to have stuff in worse shape than when I found it - doesn't always work but usually helps - great bunch of coins - better than some of my month totals....heh
@infinityhaze No. The plastic bristles don't scratch the surface and they don't push down the dirt and grind it into the coin. When you use a cloth or your thumb you are turning that cloth or your thumb into sand paper.
@marxplastic2011 hello Its been in the woods for how long and pounded byu the elements for how long? LOL Rubbing some dirt off the coin isnt gonna hurt it any!
Awesome find on that Barber TF. I probably would have tried to roll that log over to see if anything was under there but that's just me. Looking forward to your next video, MM2
I would love there to be a show on T.V. with the following people detecting for different things each week. (In no particular order) Yuelelah, Nugget noggin, TreasureFiend and roadkillscjim. That would make a great show and you all have personalities I love to watch all of you guys on youtube.
u can get about 30 bucks for tht half...nice job! if you have any questions about how much money a coin is worth just message me the facts and ill let u know...ryan
@Lookn4Seated REALLY??? lol jk. Ive always wondered cause I am a certified welder and it take a harder metal to scratch another metal and dirt isnt harder than metal so Ive always wondered if it even really mattered.
I've been enjoying your videos, they make me want to go out more and more. I found my first gold yesterday - a school class ring and a sterling ring in the same park. I have only been hunting for two months and your videos give me the fever! When i pulled the ring yesterday I went alone and had to share all that exitement with myself I think you know the feeling---this is addicting stuff! Keep up the good work with the videos we enjoy watching.
Way to go TF!! I recently dug one of those good luck tokens and immediately after found my first silver (merc) and the next day found a seated dime and both were in my yard! I found out the grandchildren of the guy that created the token still live in my area and I gave it to them as a keepsake as he had long since passed. Great vid and HH!!

Wow Treasure!!! Im very glad you found some very interesting coins!!! May God bless you!!! This is one of my best detecting videos I've ever seen!!! Congrats buddy!!!
Hey great finds ! I was wondering how you pick these spots in the woods to detect. Do you do some research first or just see an area while driving and go for it? Congrats again and thanks in advance for any input you might have.
Fantastic coin spill, congrats on some great coins! How the heck does the half stay on top of the ground and the nickel and dime sink in! lol This hobby surprises me all the time. HH
HUGE Congratulations to ya TF!!! Great video. You've just inspired many, many people to get out and swing this weekend!!! My hat's off to ya buddy!!! Did DDub get skunked???
There are coin spills and then there are COIN SPILLS! Needless to say that was one of "capital" proportions, thanks for the video, I shared your excitement too!
Looking for info on the token find. Got one myself, looking to see what it is etc. Posted video response, if you have any info on it please let me know! Thanks you guys!!!
Good job, kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what you have found.so far this year i have found a 36 wash 52 rosie 76 ken half, still trying to find the old stuff it gives us hope when we see you guys finding things like that happy hunting stuman 61
@infector101 Well most people say it is 10 percent research, 90% perspiration. Good indicators are old bottles on the surface, old track ways, collection of stones, possibly indicating a structure.
What a day! That was hilarious to find a good luck token after you had already hit the motherlode! Now it's about time for another contest and maybe that half could be the prize! LOL!!!!
@Daddydigger1 Thanks Daddydigger! My girlfriend actually bought that for me for my birthday last year. She also got me a coffee mug that says, "Addicted to Metal Detecting". Little does she know the mug is spot on! What a gal, huh?
Big time hunt, congrats,,,I thought my 37 walking half, buff nickel, and 6 wheat's was a once in a life time coin spill..and you had to go and top that,,,great video.i could;not be more happy for you....R.D.D.
@REDDIRTDIGGER Up until now I never found a half of any kind in a pocket spill and this is my 3rd half ever found while MD'ng (others were 2 Franklins) - I LOVE THIS HOBBY!
@Ardenwolfe Yea thats the 1st surface find that I found (that wasn't because of roots) The only thing I can think of is that area flooded out a few weeks ago and the dirt was removed but that still doesn't explain why the dime and nickle were down a few inches from the half. One 1 hand the half has more surface area but on thye other it has more weight than the others. Weird but I'll take them however I can get them!!! hahaha
Congrats again on a spectacular hunt. Need to get myself out of the dry spell. I guess it would help if I checked the sensitivity setting on the detector once in a while. Doh! Maybe next time.
Awesome video and hunt ! Man alive you tore it up today in the woods. Big Congrats on the Barber half and all your finds. Good luck on your next hunt !

Isn't that strange? How some coins stay on the surface for years and years. And how others manage to be so deep into the ground?
Mad congratulations! ;)
Ardenwolfe 11 months ago
