I'm not sure if I watched the official version, but mine lasted like two hours and a half. Way too long. The movie would've been great if they shaved an hour off. There were a lot of irrelevant scenes, as well.
This was a mid matinee for me because, while Sandler and Rogen were amazing and funny, the third act dragged on and took the momentum out of the movie's sails.

It is a terrible shame because this film could have been fantastic! It could have been Apatow's masterpiece! But it seems to me that he just didn't care and was blinded by his own success and the admiration critics and audiences have for him. In closing, I am not trying to be spiteful or anything but I was just angry after seeing this film in the theatres! If I hadn't paid money, I might be a little more forgiving towards Apatow. It's one thing to be full of yourself as a filmmaker and still know how to make an engaging film, but it's another thing when you're full of yourself and are blinded by how full of yourself you really are.
Now, I know that some to a lot of you reading this will want to attack me for hating on Apatow's "personal project". No matter what, every film, no matter how personal or non-personal, must have extremely ultra-hard work and tough discipline combined with acute sharpness and awareness of its audience in tact. This film had none of that. It seemed as if Apatow relied too much on a general idea but he never fleshed that general idea out to engaging three-dimensionality.
I have never seen a filmmaker have such disregard for his audience while becoming so obsessed with himself and his desire to make his "personal film" by trying to copy (and failing miserably) the narrative and aesthetic style and substance of James L. Brooks.
Concerning the dramatic aspects in "Funny People", the drama is so uninteresting, boring, pointless, worthless, disconnecting, and unrelatable. Beyond that, it wasn't even good drama. Let's face it: it was terrible drama. Not only was it terribly written drama it was also terribly directed drama. Then again, every single aspect of this film, both dramatic and comedic, was terribly written and directed!
In Apatow's failure with "Funny People", the comedy is so unfunny, inappropriate, out of place, dull, and most of all, contrived. (SPOILER!) Even the jokes that Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen told during the scenes involving their stand-up routines were just awful and painful to watch when they are supposed to be funny.
It's a shame because with "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up" I could see the modesty yet boldness and fresh originality Apatow had with his material and direction. But with "Funny People" the modesty was gone and it showed in the awfulness of its final cut.
I was soooo excited for this film though as it was being obnoxiously and arrogantly advertised as "the third film by Judd Apatow", thus deriving the notion that Apatow finally realized what a golden god he is to the comedy genre after the release of "Knocked Up" which resulted him to become one of the most seemingly arrogant, care-free, and undisicplined filmmakers in Hollywood since M. Night Shyamalan made "Lady in the Water".
Now, a lot of you are going to hate me and will want to attack me for what I am about to say…but screw it. I will say it. This movie was more about what stand-up is not. I couldn't sympathize w/ Adam Sandler's character. Even after he was cured he was a dick. I'm so sick of him always finding a way to relate his jokes back to his crotch. Seth Green and Seth Rogen were the only 2 characters that represented stand-up comedy. They were funny, Sandler was pathetic.
Jonah Hill. I goofed. Cut me some slack. Actually watching this movie was not a rental for Adam Sandler fans. This is some ol' bullsh*t all around. I just think this movie makes me think that this guy turns this guy into a unlikable jackass.
The best thing about Funny People is how much you could talk about it afterwards. They spent most of the time talking about the plot, but once you get into the theme, thats when it really becomes fascinating. Aside from the human fallibility aspect, I don't think any other movie has said so much about comedy.
i'm getting a bit tired of Appatow movies...they're 20 mins to long everytime and it just kills it for me. Every one of his movies near the end i'm yelling at the screen "CAN SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE ME LAUGH NOW?!!!!" they're still funny, but way to gushy and long.

This movie was good, but it did drag out way too much. Kept waiting for it...is it bout to end...no...another story, alright.....has to end now...no...just never came. Also, a penis joke or two, fine, but ffs this went overboard. That said, it was still alright and worth seein.
I loved the film, but I can definitely understand why a lot of people didn't like it. This was really different from anything Apatow's ever done and Adam Sandler wasn't the actor the mainstream audience thought he was going to be (another reason why I loved the film). The movie was 75% realistic and human and 25% raunchy Apatow comedy, rather than the other way around.

I had some doubts at first cause recently Adam has done some bad movies and once Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill became more famous they seemed a little less flexible than they were when they were rising stars, and just the fact that we've gotten some real bad comedy attempts recently, but from the sound of it I'm very interested in seeing this. I saw those parts they showed on T.V. and they were hilarious. It looks like alot of fun.
I was talking about the ending to the review its second to only Terminator as being the most funny one I they did. Terminator the movie was fucked as soon as they tried to have war and a PG-13 rating. Then they brought batman in as Connor... not gonna work.
The reviews are recorded without video and the animated characters are more visually stimulating than standard video would be, and it makes for better editing too.

I think most people who didn't like it was people who loved adam movies that are only stupid silly. This movie is more dry humor. I like those movies alot too but I thought this movie was fantatstic. I really enjoyed it. Full Price maybe better then sex not sure

This was a surprisingly good movie. I had fun watching it and didn't know what to expect. The funniest part is when Eric Bana's wife (Leslie Mann) goes off on him, mockingly in his Australian voice, she is stupid for that one! "Hair...from her pussy" Thanks for including that clip Spill

This movie was more about what stand-up is not. I couldn't sympathize w/ Adam Sandler's character. Even after he was cured he was a dick. I'm so sick of him always finding a way to relate his jokes back to his crotch. Seth Green and Seth Rogen were the only 2 characters that represented stand-up comedy. They were funny, Sandler was pathetic.
If your an Adam Sandler fan. Rental.

The best thing about Funny People is how much you could talk about it afterwards. They spent most of the time talking about the plot, but once you get into the theme, thats when it really becomes fascinating. Aside from the human fallibility aspect, I don't think any other movie has said so much about comedy.

i'm getting a bit tired of Appatow movies...they're 20 mins to long everytime and it just kills it for me. Every one of his movies near the end i'm yelling at the screen "CAN SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE ME LAUGH NOW?!!!!" they're still funny, but way to gushy and long.

This movie was good, but it did drag out way too much. Kept waiting for it...is it bout to end...no...another story, alright.....has to end now...no...just never came. Also, a penis joke or two, fine, but ffs this went overboard. That said, it was still alright and worth seein.

I loved the film, but I can definitely understand why a lot of people didn't like it. This was really different from anything Apatow's ever done and Adam Sandler wasn't the actor the mainstream audience thought he was going to be (another reason why I loved the film). The movie was 75% realistic and human and 25% raunchy Apatow comedy, rather than the other way around.

I had some doubts at first cause recently Adam has done some bad movies and once Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill became more famous they seemed a little less flexible than they were when they were rising stars, and just the fact that we've gotten some real bad comedy attempts recently, but from the sound of it I'm very interested in seeing this. I saw those parts they showed on T.V. and they were hilarious. It looks like alot of fun.

The reviews are recorded without video and the animated characters are more visually stimulating than standard video would be, and it makes for better editing too.
