AND THERE'S THE GREAT, FANTASTIC, GENIUS, TOMMY TEDESCO. CHECK OUT HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY. I DON'T KNOW WHEN HE STOPPED DOING HIS COLUMN FOR GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE BUT HE OFFERED HIS INCREDIBLE INSIGHT TO BEING A SESSION MUSICIAN.
I had always thought that this was played on either a Danelectro 6-string bass or a Danelectro Baritone guitar, but I recently learned that it was, infact, an early Fender Bass VI which explains the tone.
When our family lived in No. Santa Barbara Co., as a kid, my oldest sister dated a guy, my idol, who surfed. One day everyone packed up the family wagon and my mom took us all up to Avila... this reminds me so of those times.... thanx!!!
fbenenati, glad to know I wasn't the only guy who failed to make the "perfect wave." Still, had tons of fun lugging that giant board around during college, grad school, and through my 30s. Abandoned it after that and took up golf. However, whenever I'm near a beach, my memories harken back to that zany, innocent time when making fools of ourselves was normal. Actually surfed at Venice once...water was much nicer than home. Do you still surf?
You Tube you never fail to amaze me! Everyday I extol your virtues to anyone who will listen to me! I have always loved this instrumental, although it received minor airplay in Des Moines on KIOA, you Iowans know what I'm talkin' about, anyway I dug the excrement out of this tune. And it has stayed with me over the years, praise be to the person responsible for posting this classic that out twangs Duane Eddy! And oh yes, Rock On SHINDIGGERS!
Was a high school sophomore living a few miles from Santa Cruz when this came out. Bleached my hair, got a cheap surfboard and listened to this song constantly. Never could surf...
You are the same age as I am. I was a bit south of you in Venice and Santa Monica and Playa del Rey. I got a cheap board too and like you, I dabbled at surfing but never got good at it. Had fun trying and loved the beach.
I went to school with Jack in Howard City Mi. he was old and was the same age as my sister he rode the same bus so as it goes I had made my mother a paper and Jack the person he was riped it up just a little story about the guy they would try to get him to play the piano bin school but would never do it he was very shy. Later it has been great listening to what he did over the years great musician.
Very profound sound here. Almost existential in its conveyance. What a trip. I remember being sixteen years old when this came out and it blew me away. Sometimes I surfed alone too, so it was identifiable from that standpoint.

Who played electric bass on this track? Normally, legendary session musician
CAROL KAYE would have. However,I heard that JACK NITSCHE himself did....?

So true. I guess that's what's so great about Jack Nitzsche.

This is one of my all-time favorite surf songs. Who would have thought that strings and French horns would fit well in a surf song?

The greatest instrumental of all-time.

This song reminds me of "The Endless Summer"
film...about surfing...
And I could swear that somebody did a VOCAL
version of "The Lonely Surfer"...but with a
different title...
