I used to live in the Bronx, as a Chicago native, I can say if you get some subway maps, you can find any place in NY you want to go. The maps show subway routes as well as street routes. They are fantastic for navigating around NY, and if all else fails cabs are a great if slightly expensive way to get around. I wouldn't recommend driving anywhere in the city, but that's just me. Driving in NY is way more insane than even Chicago! Hope that helps a bit!
