@friendsrocket Maybe you're talking about Vanilla Fudge's version, that was on their self-named debut, not sure but I think it was from 1968. A great version and an excelent album!
Why, why is the top comment on those posers? EVEN HERE ...
I didn`t even know who the kid was until, like, 5 months ago, when I saw a spoof of his silly vid. And the tranny, I only heard about him when they`ve discovered he`s no woman and he tried to cover it up, saying he`s a hermaphrodite and that he doesn`t mind his small penis. Well, that thing ain`t small! I believe there`s nothing more to say about those 2.
I`m not saying today`s kids gotta hear this, but why can`t they make better music?
The Zombies WERE and ARE awesome....they held their own on the charts....and that was tough to do in the mid-60's. Smoother than the Beatles and moodier than the Beach Boys. A nice switch from Motown.....just cool! I was there.
Yeah, but the best music then was 10 times better than the music now. I blame it on the producers who can't afford to allow groups to be creative like before.
this song is about music nowadays...the girl hes talking of is the past great music industry. if yu go searching for great music today its not there....
This music is the good stuff. You don't see these guys dressing up in "meat dresses" like the crazy ass Lady Gaga. They don't have to because they have talent.
I was 15 in '65 & yes I have to admit with crocetti 1984 that yes, they were saying that the music was noise & didn't make any sense & I remember getting so irritated. I now understand their position of wanting the good of the past, & actually only the good in the past is what should survive of the past; however, I wish I could be as positive as crocetti 1984 that what is not good in talent today will not survive, just like what was not good in '65 didn't survive.
Oops! S'okay. Sometimes I do things like that too. I can't help getting a little psycho over Colin. Just wish he still looked like he did in the 70s and 80s!
I never said hello in the first place. If you don't like my favorite group, you don't need to comment on anything related to the Zombies at all. Go listen to your Lady Gaga or whatever it is you kiddies do.
I'm 63. I grew up with this music. There is not much like it now. I know I'm an old bastard, yet I do like some new stuff. But the radio doesn't even play anything good, if it is there. If the same situation existed back then, we probably would have never heard of the Kinks, Zombies and maybe even the Beatles, Stones ... and definitely Bob Dylan. They all would have been considered too weird. I feel for young people today, they have to search out music.
Amen! I love this music, so don't let my handle fool you. Was in my teens and 20s during the 80s, but like the 60s and 70s a lot more. You were lucky to remember these groups in their heyday!
@ both of you. Totally agree. I love music from classics, via the 60's and even Punk but today is just total dross. The majority of good bands are "banned" to the indie scene. You only have to watch TV to see the kind of programmes that bring the "dross" of today into your homes. Fücking sad :(
Great band ...great singer Colin Blunstone .......super Rod Argent.........Remember meeting and playing on the same bill with MikeTinsley" Hedgehoppers Anonymous"
All of the architects of rock and roll never intended to create any sort of a niche for a fucking Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga. They would have burned their guitars AND the recording studios if they had any idea what would transpire. They were about innovation and diversity. These new clowns are given a formula and they go with it, add a cosmetic gimmick, and the poseurs never look back. Dumb asses everywhere suck it up, too. It is to make me weep.
Buddy, you are SO right. I hate today's insipid, corporate, bling-obsessed "music" and its talentless singers. The 1960's was a fantastic era for music, with classic tracks seeming to be released almost weekly - and The Zombies can hold their heads up high with the best of them. Thanks for posting!
@MerseySky Music has to evolve. Sometimes it's not for the better but the blessing of music like Justin Bieber's is that it makes you appreciate the music of the Beatles, the Stones, the Zombies, etc.
Yes, the bands from that time were innovative, but really, what's left to innovate? Pop music back then had a formula too. The Beatles had long hair and wore suits, so everyone followed. It was about making money then just as it is now. I love this music too, but don't be blinded by nostalgia.
@crocetti1984 : What you see now is the devolution of rock. Back then, we anxiously awaited the next new explosion. Now we're anticipating personalities, a la "American Idol." They don't get far on the show if they promote their own material. "American Composer" would be a flop these days. Nostalgia? Don't make me laugh-- harder.
@MerseySky We're always going to see what's new as horrible garbage when we compare it to classics. After all, older folks in the 50s were calling Rock n Roll "just noise" and it was "poisoning the youth". There was a lot of bullshit music in the 60s too, but we don't remember them because they faded into obscurity, and all we're left with is memories of the good things, so of course we're going to think everything that was made back then was gold. Shit nowadays won't be remembered in 20 years.
@crocetti1984 YES! YES! THANK YOU! im so tired of hearing people complain about bieber and gaga on these videos! bashing current tunes is not a requirement to listen to oldies!!!!!!!
@MarjaneChedid: The inability to distinguish between the insipidity of today's music and yesterday's standards for excellence, luckily, isn't a requirement either.
@MerseySky au contraire, Because songs like "Johnny Get Angry" and "Winchester Cathedral" were just so profound! if you shopped around beyond what gets heavy play on the top 40 you'd find there's a lot more than the "insipid pop music" (which by the way has the same boy-meets-girl type of lyrics music had since the hit parade). besides there is no rule of music that says i can't listen to the zombies in the morning and then go out with my friends at night and dance to gaga at the club.
@MarjaneChedid: [Yawn] I do my homework, thank you, and I don't need you to assign any. That's what people do when they think they have nothing left to learn. I listen to the Dropkick Murphys, Magnetic Fields, Cage the Elephant and Driveby Truckers. I don't listen to Top 40, thank you, but it's obvious that that's your stock-in-trade. Go dance your idiotic ass into the ground and I'm sure you'll devise more uninspired rants which will be just as riveting as the last. =P
@MerseySky u never gone out dancing to music ur parents thought was shit? all I'm saying is don't stereotype "all music today is bad". being open-minded is what your generation is all about isnt it? and no, top 40 isnt my favorite but i do listen to it from time to time to keep up with what the kids are listening to so i can give an intelligent reason on why I think this or that song is good or bad.
i have enjoyed this exchange with you though. despite your insults you put up a good fight.
@MerseySky I don't believe there is such a thing as a "musical revolution". music constantly and gradually changes from one movement to another and sometimes repeats itself. but to answer your question I think any movement that creates a culture or subculture is the new "revolution". right now its glittery dance bubblegum pop and "hipster" music. back in the early to mid 90s it was the gangsta rap/R&B. back in the 60s it was the british invasion, the 50s rock n roll, the 40s big band, etc.
@crocetti1984 I agree with your statement, but you have 2 admit that the bullshit/real music ratio is different now. There's no talent required to become a "musician" nowadays, the "message" has changed as well. Compare the lyrics or musical/singing abillity of any crappy 60's song to something like Lil Wayne, or Kesha. Most of todays artists are manufactured. There's also no competition for airplay: Clearchannel owns over 80% of the airwaves in the US and decides what's considered "popular".
@crocetti1984 you are absolutely right, the only oldies we hear today are the great ones. So we tend to think everything made back then was a classic. BUT the problem is, there were more "classics" released just in 1965 alone, than all of the last 20 years combined (1991-2011). In fact, you could pick any year between 1964 - 1969 and that would be true.
@MerseySky What They would do no such thing. They would still play. If you dont like something you dont have to buy it or listen to it. Idk know why ppl are buying garbage music either its beyond me. Support bands you like and they will have the commercial success not justin bibeber or whoever.
@MrHoward55 I think you 're referring to my comment. I completely agree with you. '70 was pretty much an extension of '69, and '71 was the beginning (and arguably best year) of the singer-songwriter phase-- James Taylor, Neil Young, Carole King, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, etc. Not to mention Three Dog Night, Chicago, even the Carpenters and Bread (yeah, I know-- but let's face it, both were awesome). And of course, Zeppelin, Santana, Stones, Jethro Tull, etc. for the harder rock.
@J5MARLON: Well, THIS old girl never listened to any of it. The 1950s had Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Sam Cooke. The 1960s was the era of the Gods-- Beatles, Stones, The Who, Janis, Jimi, The Doors, the Small Faces, Kinks and Motown, too! The 1970s had Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie and AC/DC. The 1980s had The Clash, REM and ZZ Top. In the 1990s, there was Nirvana and Jane's Addiction. So who comprises the vanguard of rock today? Snoop Dogg? Britney Spears? (cont'd)
@J5MARLON: FM radio has become as insipid as AM was, even before the fundies and pundits fucked it up . One great innovation that this old school rocker loves is Pandora. Occasionally, they serve up a new gem and I revel in those finds for a day or two. Notice that they don't call that little TV turd fest "American Composer." What music is usually featured on that show? Oh, yeah, old school rock, mainly... Let me know when someone wins as they sing their own compositions. (cont'd)
@J5MARLON: You can find me at Wrigley Field because there will be a greater likelihood of back-to-back World Series wins for them than in finding a genuinely talented "Idol." There will probably be a huge demand for parkas by those departing for hell then, too.
@MerseySky Welcome. BTW like you, I'm the local rant artist when it comes to vilifying today's music. People say I'm just getting old, that the older songs have nostalgia which gives them the illusion of being better, etc. I say BULL$H%T! You can HEAR the difference in songwriting quality and arrangement, and there's basically no one today with songs nearly as good as the Guess Who or the Classics IV, Let alone Carole King or Chicago. Not even close. If I'm wrong, play me some! ;o)
Instead of complaining about something that everybody knows (the most popular music is mainly shit), try to find the hundreds, thousands, bands that are worthy nowadays. And it's kinda easy with the Internet.
@Medioda: Don't presume to tell me what to do. I've been around the musical block a time or two and you have no standing to tell me what to do or think. Piss off, you presumptuous, pusillanimous twit.
Sorry, you're right, 60's whas an awesome decades and we'll never see such creativity again (even if I don't know what could be great nowadays). And that's not presumptous !
and to be a little more constructive: of course 60's music was different. But its the same for 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s. Its just that its not what your looking for, but it doesn't mean that it's bad. And there are so much to discover, from rock to jazz, hip-hop to electronic, etc...
I can understand that you're most familiar with the 60s, but thats not a reason to tell prejudices about what we have nowadays, because its far from being limited to mainstream pop or savorless indie rock
@Medioda: I do listen to other things, assclown, and you've no standing to talk to me. If you think that yammering away on a YouTube forum is going to matter a hoot in hell, then you're as delusional as a Justin Bieber fan. I have academic standing in the study of music so STFU. You talk as if you're the premier savant of the music world, yet you spout off things that Captain Obvious wouldn't sputter on about. You don't even have the ability to say something interesting. You're a snooze. STFU.
@MerseySky as if there wasn't an unbearable amount of formulaic horseshit in the '60s and '70s. the truly great stuff that gets remembered now barely charted back then. music isn't more commercial now than it was back then; it's less so, the overheads of production and distribution have fallen to almost nothing. music now *is* inherently more diverse, because diversification happens over time. and the indie stuff gets performed, gets bought, and gets listened to. it's a great time for music.
@MerseySky But the public WILL turn on JB and LG just like they did on Michael Jackson. It just takes a couple years, and the sharpened knives of the media plunge into the media Frankensteins and tear them apart, until they're driven to a premature death. I can't wait!

There is no question that Colin had, and still has one of the finest, purest, sweetest voices in history. He is my second favorite, after the legendary Jon Anderson. Listening to music like this song, actually can help people to be healed from difficulties of life.
@darkside, if you dig this song. I think the best song by the Zombies is Time Of The Seasons. "whats your name, whos your daddy, yeah is he rich like me" dreamy song indeed.
@emike1211 to answer your question....yes , I alwasys think that about the artist.
They are either in a nursing home or dead. However intresting enough we give it more thought because their youth has been mortalized by film. The thought is like "Wow look at those cool people.....just think they are old or dead now"
i grow up in the 60s in 1960 i was ten i even sang in a singing contest on the stageat the apollo in manchester well before the beatles set foot on it... the sixies and 70s soul was the best ever nothing well ever touch it
wow lmao i liked this and now 666 people like this lmao, good song, first song ive heard by this band and im a huge 60s rock fan, man was i missing out!
In 65 I was 13. My parents would allow me to walk to the dance hall in Steamboat on Sat. evenings durring the summer, and these were some of the tunes being 'covered' by the dance band...I'll never forget it..
Well let me tell you about the way she looked, the way she acts and the color of her hair. Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright, but she's not there!
If you had heard all of the really bad stuff that was passed off as pop music pre-'64 (surf music excluded--check out Beach Boys Lost Concert), then heard music like this, you'd understand the British Invasion. It was the old "scales falling off my eyes" moment.
the youngsters have cellphones, Ipods and red bull - we had endless summers, led zeppelin and V8's - oopps didnt hear my cell, better take my Ipod off and have a red bull then I'll go out to the garage plug in my valve amp and play some Zombies. We win 'cos we were there.
To all you dudes who are concerned about the present age of these people, I tell you this ... you and your girlfriends will all be this age pretty soon ... but there isn't one human being in the world today who can play Rod Argent's electric piano solo in this song note for note.
My sister was a go-go dancer on Hullabaloo for a year. She was a trained dancer, with big boobs. She was also a Playboy Bunny at the West Los Angeles playboy club. She is 65 now. I am 54, so I was around ten when she was doing that stuff. She ran with a fast crowd, and is now a recluse in the mountains of New Mexico, with her pack of dogs.
The Zombies were one of the best bands to come out of the British Invasion, IMNSHO. They had the fabulous voice of Colin Blunstone and of course, Rod Argent, and his jazz influenced organ style.
Wow! What a song, what a group! I believe that the Zombies were WAY ahead of their time, in that their music still sounds so fresh decades later. Come to think of it, the 60's as a whole were way ahead of their time too!
i'm a hundred and fourty four and i think Vivaldie rocks!

There's no talent required to become a "musician" nowadays, the "message" has changed as well. Compare the lyrics or musical/singing abillity of any crappy 60's song to something like Lil Wayne, or Kesha. Most of todays artists are manufactured. There's also no competition for airplay: Clearchannel owns over 80% of the airwaves in the US and decides what's considered "popular".
nightmathzombieethan 11 months ago
@nightmathzombieethan Indeed. Thankfully the ones that have no real talent fade quickly.
crocetti1984 11 months ago
@crocetti1984 you are absolutely right, the only oldies we hear today are the great ones. So we tend to think everything made back then was a classic. BUT the problem is, there were more "classics" released just in 1965 alone, than all of the last 20 years combined (1991-2011). In fact, you could pick any year between 1964 - 1969 and that would be true.

J5MARLON 10 months ago
@J5MARLON I agree with your observation with one correction. I think you could also include the year 1970 and possibly 1971 in your statement
MrHoward55 10 months ago
@MrHoward55 I think you 're referring to my comment. I completely agree with you. '70 was pretty much an extension of '69, and '71 was the beginning (and arguably best year) of the singer-songwriter phase-- James Taylor, Neil Young, Carole King, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, etc. Not to mention Three Dog Night, Chicago, even the Carpenters and Bread (yeah, I know-- but let's face it, both were awesome). And of course, Zeppelin, Santana, Stones, Jethro Tull, etc. for the harder rock.
takfam07 10 months ago
(cont'd)
MerseySky 10 months ago
@J5MARLON: FM radio has become as insipid as AM was, even before the fundies and pundits fucked it up . One great innovation that this old school rocker loves is Pandora. Occasionally, they serve up a new gem and I revel in those finds for a day or two. Notice that they don't call that little TV turd fest "American Composer." What music is usually featured on that show? Oh, yeah, old school rock, mainly... Let me know when someone wins as they sing their own compositions. (cont'd)
MerseySky 10 months ago
@J5MARLON: You can find me at Wrigley Field because there will be a greater likelihood of back-to-back World Series wins for them than in finding a genuinely talented "Idol." There will probably be a huge demand for parkas by those departing for hell then, too.
Damn, I love the First Amendment.

MerseySky 10 months ago
@MerseySky Welcome. BTW like you, I'm the local rant artist when it comes to vilifying today's music. People say I'm just getting old, that the older songs have nostalgia which gives them the illusion of being better, etc. I say BULL$H%T! You can HEAR the difference in songwriting quality and arrangement, and there's basically no one today with songs nearly as good as the Guess Who or the Classics IV, Let alone Carole King or Chicago. Not even close. If I'm wrong, play me some! ;o)
takfam07 10 months ago
@MerseySky
Instead of complaining about something that everybody knows (the most popular music is mainly shit), try to find the hundreds, thousands, bands that are worthy nowadays. And it's kinda easy with the Internet.
And no, 60's music wasn't better
Medioda 9 months ago
@Medioda: Don't presume to tell me what to do. I've been around the musical block a time or two and you have no standing to tell me what to do or think. Piss off, you presumptuous, pusillanimous twit.
MerseySky 9 months ago
@MerseySky
Sorry, you're right, 60's whas an awesome decades and we'll never see such creativity again (even if I don't know what could be great nowadays). And that's not presumptous !
Medioda 9 months ago
@MerseySky
and to be a little more constructive: of course 60's music was different.
Medioda 9 months ago
@Medioda: I do listen to other things, assclown, and you've no standing to talk to me. If you think that yammering away on a YouTube forum is going to matter a hoot in hell, then you're as delusional as a Justin Bieber fan. I have academic standing in the study of music so STFU. You talk as if you're the premier savant of the music world, yet you spout off things that Captain Obvious wouldn't sputter on about. You don't even have the ability to say something interesting. You're a snooze. STFU.

@MerseySky as if there wasn't an unbearable amount of formulaic horseshit in the '60s and '70s. the truly great stuff that gets remembered now barely charted back then. music isn't more commercial now than it was back then; it's less so, the overheads of production and distribution have fallen to almost nothing. music now *is* inherently more diverse, because diversification happens over time. and the indie stuff gets performed, gets bought, and gets listened to. it's a great time for music.
darrylglass5102 8 months ago
@MerseySky But the public WILL turn on JB and LG just like they did on Michael Jackson. It just takes a couple years, and the sharpened knives of the media plunge into the media Frankensteins and tear them apart, until they're driven to a premature death. I can't wait!
