Did you know one of the rangers beat a mother goose to death with a stick and stompted a few of the nests? Workers reported it to the park service in Richmond, nothing was done about it. Except the employees who witnessed were treated so badly they were forced to quit. Fun fact next time you think about bringing your family.
Thanks for the comments - we love this trail. We have often wondered about the "door" right before the tunnel's entrance (it is a door with a padlock now, but we remember seeing the chain link cage). We'll try to pedal faster next time we pass it.
The bridge you crossed over was a border to an old farm----if you follwed the stream to the entracnce to the new river---this ws one of the greatest fishing spots along the river------The rapids before the shot tower was another---thanks for the ride
I am from Austinvillle ,I remember when this was railroad tracks and the train actually ran when I was a young lad:-) There is an opening that is caged in right before the entrance to the tunnel---this went to level 500 of the lead and zinc mines that was there until 1982 before closing. My dad and My wifes father worked there for 32 years.
This level was supposibly haunted I lived there for 18 years and still have a house there when I return to visit----
