Lee Morgan is definitely in the pantheon of the Jazz Giants! When something is an art it won't bring itself to you, you have to bring yourself to it. Other wise you won't understand the artistry or the complexities. This tune is the exception! It reached out and touch me!!
Lee Morgan does this wah-kind of effect here and there on this song that just sounds cool, especially during his second solo, where he connects that effect. Also, it's weird, certain of Shorter's sounds, especially on this song, are different than anything else I have of his, with Miles, The Messengers, or his own stuff. But here it's cool because he begins the sound to answer back Lee's wah sound. Great stuff. Stuck n Lee lately - so different from Hub's smooth technique, varied and brash.

Great to find a new setting in wich Grant Green played! I'm not a fan of trumpets, but Grant Green and Herbie Hancock are the best! So this is still worth buying!
Hey all. I'm a trumpet player and I was just wondering if anyone knows how the heck Lee Morgan does that cool-sounding tonguing trick? It appears from 1:50-1:52 and also at 2:07-2:10. I REALLY want to learn how to do this so please help! I transcribed his entire solo on this song already (both first and second) and that's the only part I can't do. Thanks in advance!
Gentlemen, there's no accounting for taste. Everyone back then was raving about "Search for the New Land" when this was the electrifying track, one of the best 10 from the glorious Blue Note 60's.
Personnel on this fabulous 1964 album of Lee Morgan compositions: Lee Morgan (Trumpet), Wayne Shorter (Tenor Sax), Grant Green (Guitar), Herbie Hancock (Piano), Reggie Workman (Bass), Billy Higgins (Drums).
All jazz has structure except for the most avant garde, this piece is VERY structured. The amount of improvisation here is pretty standard for a small group jazz. This piece does not distinguish itself in the ways you mentioned. What I think you like about it is the mood and the fact that it's melodic. BTW, smooth jazz is not jazz.
Blackplatano- I dont agree with everything you commented partly because Im not sure what your responding to however I gave you a thumbs up for saying something bad about "smooth jazz" :] The quality of the improvisation here is outstanding of course the AMOUNT is standard Each artist has a structured amount of time (12-24 bars) to do their thing but what this group did with this tune is not standard but outstanding MORGAN was 1 of the GENIUSES when he wasn't strung out
