Brilliant - I have built this kit myself but I kindly gave it to a relative but I am hoping to bring it back to do a video a bit like this as it is already built, painted and decalled by me :) As you said, the kit may have been round for a while but it is still a classic little gem in my opinion... :) :) Great! :)
@2002And Yes, it's a nice quite accurate kit.. not much cockpit detail but you wouldn't see that in the finished model anyway, especially if you use the pilot and gunner provided.. :)
@eenproductions The trouble is.. Airfix has got at least three dufferent types of decals.. the old ones, which are generally easy to use, but often out of register.. a newer range, which are in good register, but very thin and difficult to use.. and their latest decal sheets, which are really quite good.. :) I think the GR3 is an old kit, so you can have anyone of the types, depending on the boxing.. Is it the new style red box?? :)
@eenproductions Whewn it comes to models my patience is (almost) endless.. :) Sounds like you may have the earlier style decals, perhaps, as they are both thin and easily torn.. You should really e-mail or write to Airfix and ask for a new sheet, if possible.. sadly I have none in my spares.. :P
@BasicModelling already put them on! however, i do have the supermarine walrus mk2 1:72 with the ones i think you mean. might try for some new ones of them. i didnt have the paint for it, so i gave i camo ^_^
A very nice model of the historic Westland Lysander. Remember too all of you modelers the brave men who flew these aircraft into Germqn occupied Europe at night, without GPS or sophisticated navigation aids. They flew , as they used to say, "by dead reckoning and moonlight" Many never returned to base.
@BerlinBunker1 I always send a thought to the crew or the individual pilot of the planes that I build.. and a spare thought for the ground crew that maintained it as well.. :)
I didnt think that the Lysander from Airfix was still going, i thought she was discontinued like all the other great kits that they produced, but im wrong :O
@Ezza190 It's still available, but I would expect them to rebox it soon anyway, in the new style boxes, and maybe with some different decals.. If and when they do I will buy at least one more kit.. :)
I built the Airfix Lysander a few months ago. It's not too bad but the wing dihedral is too flat. The Matchbox/Revell Lysander is an overall better kit.
This Airfix Lysander is the second version they produced (from the 1970s). They had an original kit from the early 1960s which had no cockpit interior - just a pair of heads moulded onto a "shelf".
Ah, yes.. the heads.. classic early Airfix, I almost feel a twinge of sadness everytime I have to remove an Airfix pilot head.. Just think, at one time that was the best of the best in model kits! I haven't seen the Revell / Matchbox Lysander, I think Revell did a very limited re-issue a couple of years ago and it sold out before I could get one..
To me the Airfix kit is good enough, I have built the RAF 'spy' version, but painted it in the wrong colours, the brown was too dark :(.. But I do have another kit which, just like the Blenheim, will be built in Finnish colours.
Flash is any excess plastic that has been left on the parts in the moulding process, because the moulds are getting old and plastic is leaking out.. It's easily removed with a knife or by sanding, in most cases.. but it adds extra work to the model, so flash free is always best.. :)
I don't think it did much for my subs.. :) But I hoped to pass 700 before years end, and I hit the mark tonight.. Just hope nobody unsubs until January 1st now... :)
Soon passing 10.000.. nothing like what you get on your videos, but I'm happy! The viewings have died down again now though, the video has returned to its previous state of anonymity.. :)
Yeah probably, but there are definatly more boring videos than this, this is really helpfull & interesting, watching paint dry, or grass grow, is niether helpfull or interesting, how could this possibly be viewed as boring.
I think the daily telegraph need to do some more resaerch...
I have been looking for the Revell version for a while.. it's the old Matchbox kit.. You can get a resin conversion set, and convert it into a 'Twin Lizzie', the set is designed especially for the Revell / Matchbox kit so won't work as well or at all, with the Airfix kit.. :)
lol... i just saw in the news on danish television this video has been nominated as the most boring video on youtube ever... don't know why... have you heard about this?
Really?? I wondered why the viewings had gone up?? Now, the most boring video ever is an honour I'm sure!! I'll look into it tomorrow.. I'm quite flattered, actually.. Mind you, I can think of a load of videos more boring than this one.. :)
Ah...those wonderful days long ago, when there was only one television station, and Airfix kits, Mamod steam engines and the weekly Dandy and Beano kept us sane.....
Sure was, both the Mk.I and the Mk.IV's.. I think there's a Mk.IV preserved in a museum in Finland, somewhere.. I have just 'finnished' a MiG-15 UTI in Finnish colours, will make and post a video shortly.. I also have a video of a Finnish Vampire, and am in the middle of making a Finnish Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6.. post war version! I hope to get a small collection of Ilmavoimat aircraft in due time.. :)
I'd do the 'Special Ops' version, if there is one with your kit.. :) That'll be dark green / dark earth over black... :) But there's so many attractive 'After Market' decal schemes out there.. just pick your choice.. :)
Hannants have a set of Finnish Bombs in stock now.. shame I didn't know about them yesterday, it would have been a tempting buy.. :) But I only saw it in their weekly newsmail today.. :(
well, just a bit of paint change and decal change to finnish ww2 standards and voila! I have a pic from a finnish av magazine but only black and white...i put that pic up in one of my finnish airplane videos. probably you have the correct colour patterns...nice to see this because apparently I had missed it or it was before I boldly went where I had not tread before :)
I'm going to Hannants tomorrow, with my friend the ModelShop owner.. who also happens to be my neighbour.. :) I have placed an order with him for a set of decals for Finnish Lysanders, two of which will be on skis!! So as long as I can get the decals, I'll be able to do a correct version.. or two!! I'll mail you the picture of the decals, for you to enjoy! Don't know when I get round to building the model though, I have many projects planned.. :)
P'haps you did.. anyway, I have TWO more Lysander kits, so no need to redo the one I already have.. except that I may repaint it anyway, and redecal it, making it look a bit fresher, and better.. :) That'll be in the future sometime.. :0
That is fair enough! I think there's few other kits on the market in 1/72, apart from the recently re-issued Revell (ex Matchbox) kit, but that is sold out everywhere already! At least this kit is readily available in most stores still, if not at the main internet sources! And it builds a reasonably accurate model, in my opinion.. :) :)
Somebody was curious about the kit, and asked me to show the contents of the box!! :) Inbox Reviews are very useful for modellers, trying to decide if they should buy a kit or not! There are several websites dedicated to both Inbox- and building reviews! I do mine on YouTube... :) :) I know this kit inside out, as it's another of my favourites.. but the modeller who asked me didn't, and hopefully he'll now know if he wants to build it.. or not! My next one will be Finnish.. with skis, I hope! :)
Stored on an open shelf.. but my best models are stored in boxes, or drawers!! Apart from a few that are on semi-permanent display down at the local model shop!! :) :)
I remember building this kit as a boy. It was the kit I took with me when me and my mum and dad went to Colwyn Bay for two weeks! I remember spilling my little bottle of turps on the hotel's glass-topped table which seeped through a crack in the glass to totally smudge-up the picture beneath it! Ah, those were the days!
for some reason that reminds me of a kit my twin and I had - dogfight doubles which was 2 biplanes in one kit I think and we had a falling out over who was going to have the German one!
It's a very nice and accurate kit, apart from the fact you get no cock-pit interior.. but in my opinion that's not needed anyway, as you can't see much, if any, of it! Just paint the pilot and gunner well, and stick them in.. and that's all you need!! :)
Thank you! I'm hoping to pick up some decals for Finnish Lysanders on Friday.. One of which will be a winter camouflaged plane on skis! As it happens I have a pair of resin skis that may just fit.. :) Enjoy your Gladiator, are you planning to leave the pilots head in, or will you try and make a cock-pit?? :)
Indeed.. but once upon a time it was top notch stuff.. :) Modelling has moved on, even if Airfix hasn't.. Then again, I love these old kits, as you can do as much or as little with them, as you please... :)
Yes, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Lysander.. :) Looking forward to seeing your GAZ-67B wne ready.. I'm yet to start mine, but will probably do it as a side project, once I've caught up with everything else.. :)
