In most races and events a crew cannot technically win if they do not have a full complement of crew when they cross the finish line.

No really, it is. Otherwise if a crew was slightly down with 100 to go before the finish line and it's a straight course, the cox'n could jump out to lighten the load substantially. I have never competed in a race where a crew can win without a full complement of crew.

Oh right, yeh I didn't know that, I guess the logic being that if a rower gets ejected, the crew loses power as well as weight, whereas losing the cox means losing just weight!
