YOu guys are going to hate me for saying this, but my best is well over 1,500, i think it may have4 even been like 1850 or more. Truly, luck is a significant part of a good game, but stretegy is also there. Most often whenever a bomb gem comes onscreen, there is a way to destroy it before it will blow up, providing you don't waste moves or make a move which moves it far from other gems of its color. PAtience is the key.
I usually take a safe route, not matching gems, getting a Flame/Lightning/Supernova Gem near a Doom Gem, well, twist randomly, (So Bomb Gems won't drop down) Untill Doom gem timer is 1, UNLEASH THE BOOM/LIGHTING/BOOM & LIGHTING!
