@FrankRHa1 - Actually, if you check the FRA's requirements, all locomotives built after 12/31/1948 are required to have ditch lights; all steam locomotives are exempt. I'd bet those were probably chosen by 745's operators to improve nighttime visibility. Now that's not to say I like them...I think they look horribly out of place.
What a whistle, though!! The hogger's got great cord skills.
It sounds almost like there's some pounding in the crosshead(s)? I ran a light Pacific years ago in Florida that had some problems with crosshead pounding. I think it eventually got shimmed. Love this shrieky whistle!! It sure competes with the Nathan 7-chime we had!
@werksdesign I believe ditch lights are an FRA requirement now for all engines operating on the mainlines. Thus the old steamers need to be retrofitted if they want to go outside YL.
@werksdesign On American steam locomotives we're definitely not accustomed to them, but in much of Europe ditch lights have been around for a very long time -- at least since before WWII.
my God the more I hear that whistle it sound almost Ghostlly like a Louisiana spirit riseing from the Dead I am starting to love it more and more I couldnt stand the sound of it when it was on our fatefull excursion out of KC but it grows on you
@RS5TRRO This is by any means a chinese whistle. It sounds nothing like a three chime. There are many pictures of this engine with a chinese whistle as the second whistle and a sp six chime.
@acdc9902 Say what you want, but the whistle in this video is my friend's Virginian Railway 3 chime. I'm not saying that there wasn't a Chinese whistle on this engine at some point, and I'm also not saying that there isn't pictures of this engine with a Chinese whistle.....but this whistle is not Chinese. I had never heard an ex-Virginian 3 chime, and my friend that was running on these trips, referred me to THIS VERY VIDEO to hear his whistle in action. Also, it DOES sound like a 3 chime!
well those who don't know what kind of whistle that is. Its a rare chinse whistle that was on the locomotive during the 2004-2006 trips. The engineer pulls the whistle slowly to cause the haunting sound.
Cockroach2008, I have a messeage for you if you think that steam locomotives are died, then you are wrong. Steam Locomotives are the heart and soul of the American Railroad. Just Look at Union Pacific No. 844, its still in service and has been in service since the late 1940s. Don't you ever say that about the SP 745. She is service and will remain in service. The Spirit of Louisiana, never gives up.
Perhaps someone could help themselves to the whistle, bell, airpump, driving linkage, gauges, hoses and other parts which can be removed for some quick cash!
This thing was junk iron 65 years ago. It should be rolled into the scrap yard and cut up. Then it should be melted for materials for new products.
I chanced upon it on YouTube. YouTube says, "Post Comment", not "Post Positive Comments Only". I posted a comment as per the request to do so.
If you don't like my comment about steam locomotives and how they should be junked, scrapped and cut up, melted and used as materials for new fuel and maintenance efficient transportation products, that is your perogative and you may comment to it if you like.
I would like to see this thing have parts stolen off of it, cut up and melted!
And lets break down Akropolis and Colloseum and make room for land development. Lets roll the remaining Bugatti Royales to the scrapyard. Lets get rid of Smithsonians, nothing but useless junk anyway.
If guys like you had their way, this world will soon be a dead, grey place with no history.
Well, since cockroaches live in filth, and depends on garbage and dirt to consume, I guess your wiew-point is understandable, and that there is no point in arguing with you.
cockroach if you don't like these trains why do you search for these videos and bother the people that do enjoy watching them. We have plenty of new/efficent locomotives in operation, and parts/material that would be obtained from tearing them appart for other uses would be minimal. Your arguement is stupid, and pointless. Their simply are not that many operating steam trains in existance to make your argument valid.
Sorry for being ignorant but what kind of steam engine is 745
chattymagpie1210 1 year ago
745 is a Mikado 2-8-2, 195 psi, 440,000 Lbs, oil burner.

@trainmaxx
Nothing against oil burning, but I much rather love the smell of burning coal. Let's off more steam really XD

the whistle sound like my local tornado siren.
theroadkilledchicken 1 year ago
It would either be ditch lights or bringing back the old mars light. Who knows, with the FRA, steam may be required to have both relativly soon.

It is not a Chinese whistle, and it is not a 5 chime. I know the engineer personally that owns this whistle, and it is an ex-Virginian 3 chime.

I have to say the bell sounds are really annoying, the whistle is good though, but nowehere near as good as 70013 Oliver Cromwell's whistle!!

Reading and Northern Steam 4-6-2 No. 425....Now there's a whistle that will blow your mind. Engineer does quite well with the haunting effect also.

History belongs in books! The rest should be torn up and make new uses of the materials and space they occupy.

Thank you! I am happy!
Steam locomotives are a dead technology and belong cut to pieces in a junk yard or in the warm red glow in a crucible of a blast furnace!
It won't be long for this old junker to end up there. It is doomed!
