Optimus is Rodimus's mentor. When Optimus was leader, Rodimus was still named Hot Rod. When Optimus died, he left the Matrix of leadership to Ultra Magnus, who was blasted to pieces in some part of the 1980s movie. When Galvatron (the newly built Megatron), was about to defeat Hot Rod inside of Unicron (who is large, can transform into a planet that eats other planets), Hot Rod opened the matrix, thus, growing bigger and transforming into a cooler truck version of his race car.
