  • I am direct descendant of Wild Bill ,my grandmothers name was Frances Janette Hickok she was a niece , great grand ..very nice to see videos like this ..it's nice to see the past..we have alot of family history in books and family pictures ..but this is neat.

  • Very cool video about the collection. Kevin, you rock! I need to plan a trip up that way sometime soon. It's been nearly 20 years since I've been to Deadwood.

  • Excellent video!!! I am a black powder enthusiast that carries a .44 1858 Remington revolver with me when I hunt or fish!!! A little different version than Hickocks but fun to carry nonetheless!! They are a blast to shoot!! (pardon the pun!!) I also look over my shoulder when I have aces and eights in my hand during a poker game!!! Just to be safe!! Have fun and catch you on the web!!!

  • The revolver at 6:48 is a Colt 1860 Army .44 converted to cartridge, firing the .44 Colt cartridge. This handgun was originally a cap-and-ball revolver before being converted to cartridge by the Richards method pictured here.

The lower revolver pictured at 7:03 is one of the "break-top" single actions made by Smith and Wesson firing the .44 Russian cartridge. This may be the actual handgun presented to Hickok by W.F. Cody.

  • He was shot in the back of the head and the bullet came out the middle of his right cheek,I wonder what happened to the cards he was holding the famous dead man`s hand ace`s and eights.

  • It's never been proven that he was holding the dead man's hand. It's been said by some historians that the Deadwood city fathers made the story up as a marketing tool.

  • that is very cool...

sad he didnt go in the ground with him though... but i guess his fighting was over too.

one of the last true legends!

  • @warftrat87 they did bury a rifle that hickok owned with him.

  • Bald guy looks like Dr. Phil

  • Hickok used to invite any and all to watch him practice his shooting. He Was very accurate and those shows were good advertising warning young fools to find another way to die rather than try to fight him.

btw, "those guns were only 50 dollars new"

Fifty bucks was Lot of money in the 1800's.

  • there is only one recorded gunfight between two men in the middle of a street as depicted by hollywood. That was between Hickok and an idividual over a gambling dispute. As noted in other texts, most "gunfights" were sneaky things because it was damn risky to face your adversary.

  • These guns are really something; most of them cost well under $50 new; NOW, they are worth a fortune, because these legends of the Old West carried them.

  • Most famous gunslingers were shot with their back turned because they were too damn dangerous to face.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. It was said that when Jack Macall (or McCall?) was arrested he was asked why he did'nt face Wild Bill out in the street and he said "I did'nt want to commit suicide." I've been to Deadwood and seen the re-inactment of his death in the #10 Saloon. They have the trial across the street and all of the people who were eating (it's now a restraunt) were brought up to the stand as witnesses!) It's really fun and educational.

  • Thanks enjoyed seeing the guns. When Wild Bill was shot at the #10 saloon I have read there was a Hammond .44 bulldog pistol taken from his body anyone know where that gun is.

  • Wild Bill was shot in the back by a coward. It seems many of the famouse gun fighter went out that way.

  • The tune is called "Cat Briar Road" which I found at FreePlayMusic

  • what's the name of the song being played?

  • Why can't everybody be grateful? Your seeing this basically for free!

People need to learn some manners!

Thanks for showing these neat items! Like the cartridge converted Colt!

  • well said.

  • Suggestion - let's dig up the guy who killed ol Bill - was McCall his name? anyways we gotta stuff him and then make up one of those disney animatronics and let

Bill shoot the guy in his balls daily.

  • Suggestion - I think we should kill somebody with em in honor of ol Bill. Why that's what he would have done right? Of course it would have been someone deserving of having been killed so let's kill the town drunk or we could kill some really old people who don't have long to live anyways. We just GOTTA kill someone with these guns. Ol Bill would have wanted it that way. Let's dig up McCanless and put a few more slugs into him. Lets stuff McCanless and then that would be a REAL exhibit.

  • I say we shoot the curators for making us listen to about 10 minutes of speaking when all we really want to see are the guns. I love Wild Bill. They say he was one of the nicest guys going. He always stood up for the weak. One guy was beating on Buffalo Bill (when he was just a kid) and Wild Bill gave the bully a thrashing. They were friends when buf bill was just a kid and the whole family loved Wild Bill. He was a great man on side of good.

  • The official ownership papers are very clear that this gun was owned by Wild Bill, but it was not one of his everyday guns. During the period, gun manufacturers often gave celebrities of the day gifts. We believe the Colt company gave this gun to Hickok. When Charlie Utter had to sell off items to satisfy some of Hickok's debts, he sent the valuable personal effects to Hickok's family and sold off the remaining items. This gun is believed to be one of those items.

  • realdeadwood - are these official papers more or less official than baseball memoribilia papers?

  • ...uh, what the hell? Hickock carried two 1851 Colt Navy Revovlvers with ivory grips. Another distinguishing factor of his pistols is that they did not have triggers, he simply pulled and released the hammer making him very quick. Who's shit was that in the damn case?

  • it is true that he did carry two 1851 colts but when trouble occurred wild bill would swap his guns to a higher caliber weapon. so he would have had more than one set of guns.

  • Are they real? Wild Bills had white gun-stocks. And Bill didnt like holsters and Smith and Wessons. I am not sure if these guns was his.

  • bohumill - so do you really think wild bill only had one set of guns during his whole life? hardly. Interesting that somehow you knoW mORE THAN museum curators who's job it is to know this stuff but you AREN'T a museum curator but know more than them? right - Not

  • Well done.
