  • this is NOT a hit n miss engine.

  • is that lik only firing once every like 10 stroke or something.

  • Very interesting. Looks like the forerunner to the lawnmower engine of today.

  • Love those old Maytags, am working on a half scale model. Could you please tell me the approximate ignition timing on your engine?

    Thanks,

    The old tinkerer.

  • did they ever get that patent

  • Of course this wouldn't have had a motorcycle battery hooked up to it back

in the day. Didn't they use those big old volt and a half dry cell batteries

you can't find anymore? My aunt had one of the later models on her washer

in the 1920s and said it was a REAL CHORE to start the engine and keep

it going long enough to finish the laundry. Talk about a washer explosion,

my cousin tried to wash gasoline rags once and set the laundromat on fire.

  • Ive got one but im having a hell of a time getting it running right. I usually start mine by flipping the flywheel over.

  • looks like a womans best friend

  • i have a question

how is a maytage engine a hit and miss engine?

are they a true hit and miss?

what governs them to make em one?

  • They are not hit and miss like most old engines of this era. A weighted govenor is attached to flywheel on a spring. It glides over a ring on the main bearing with a brass tab attached to the battery's ground. When the flywheel slows, the gov. hits the brass piece causing engine to fire. Thus, it puts along. The tension of the spring on the gov. controls the speed.

  • It's volume governed, not hit and miss...but still nicely restored

  • It's not volume governed, it is ignition governed. There is no throttle plate in these engines.

  • is that how they were painted when new ?

  • They were red and blue like this, though blue may have been darker. Also, later models were painted all blue except for fuel tank on bottom.

  • Nice Maytag Upright! It is great to see a video of it in running condition. I can't wait to get mine running :)

  • WOW! this is really cool. how long did it take you to rebuild and did you have help?

  • I got it in October of 07. I tore it completely down, painted it, replaced parts, and put it back togeher. I got it running last week, June O8. I have had lots of advice from another maytag engine restorer in trouble shooting problems.

  • You must really must have a way with washing machines. My son-in-law blew up his washing machine, maybe you could help him restore it. I will tell him to check out your video.

  • What a small world. I did the same thing to our modern washer a couple years ago. Freak accident and quite explosive.
