Yeah that's true boot-up time is the best way to test a hdd. I even found noticeable difference between two 7200rpm hdd's. But no doubt ssd's are too fast and highly recommended for developers who need the extra juice. I am gonna buy a vertex 3 soon. :)
@neo4evrr dont buy a OCZ. its the worse SSD out. It may be one of the fasters but like 30% users have problems with it and send it back.Read some opinions on forums and you will thank me :P
Can I install an SSD and an HDD in my tower and save my games like Amnesia, Minecraft, BF3, COD on the HDD and whenever I feel like playing one run it on the SSD?
@luap627 its not only the bootup. but also all the programs you use on your pc are affected by the speed of your hdd/ssd. Lets say your working in sony vegas and you render a big movie that will take 5 hours on a hdd and 2 hours on a ssd. isnt that a big difference?
Yeah, like why does this take so long. I thought electricity travels at 186,000 + fucking miles per second. So even it the total circuit path is billions of miles long, why am I still waiting?
Must be a lotta traffic cops/lghts/intersections or something... If its all ss, I should blink and it'd be there... oh, what's that guys name again... b....
Don't forget, these are WD Caviar Blacks! These are High Performance HDDs.. The standard PC User doesn't have such quality HDDs, instead crappy Hitachi or such sh**, so a normal HDD would spend a lot more time loading Windows than a WD Caviar Black. Therefore SSDs ARE worth their price because Caviar Blacks are also not cheap.. ;)
@Poisonseed it's a new technology, the manufacture has not been streamlined. wait a few years and ssd's will be standard. HDDs took a long time before they got to the price they are at. (well not currently because of the flooding taking out some of the factories, but you get the idea.) it's how electronics work.
@Kexzee you forget though an SSD provides an overall system boost. not just booting up, so you would see major improvements on launching programs and copying files and such therefore much worth it for a cheap 64GB or so.
@Kexzee Those 10 seconds are not just for startup but everything including every application run from windows, gaming loading times also. It all adds up over the period of a year into many hours if not days saved.
@neo4evrr Hi, It was meant to point out the fact, with subtle sarcasm, that the HD gets used all the time and boot-up times are just one simple benchmark that can prove the increased performance SD drives bring about. Sorry for the misleading comment.
@gtabrpaulo agreed in general. however, high quality ssd's are now at around 1 dollar per gig. (newegg sold intel 320 series 120gb for 119 dollars.) and hdd's are incidentally skyrocketing in price because of thailand's inability to conceive of the finer points of drainage.
@hotneo7 They _CAN_ be defragged but there is no point in doing it; fragmented files only slow down mechanical drives since they have to do more physical work which adds latency. This is not the case in Flash/Solid State Drives. Defragging also wears the chips extra fast.
So basically, people buy SSD's for a faster boot up time? What a waste of money, in my eyes. I don't see why i would need a 10-20 second faster boot up time, most of the time i turn on my pc and go do something else, then come back later on, by that time it's all booted up.
Unless there's something else to an SSD other than opening stuff up 10 seconds faster, they are just a waste of money.
@helloimclaudio SSDs are twice as fast in some cases and completely silent. They don't make any undesirable noise. Other than that they are a waist of money. HDDs are good for mass storage, but as far as running the operating system; SSDs are the way to go.
@aSuperBosnianMan Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It's setup to give your hard drives redundancy and/or speed up load times depending on the configuration.
@Lele24781 to add: reinstalling apps a lot reinstalling windows a lot makes the disc scrambled, so defragging makes sure everything is from 0 to 1238129 indexed.. just formatting won't do the trick im 100% sure.. also defragging takes a lot of time in most cases so make yourself a nice pot of coffee and watch tv or so while waiting
@Tensorskills Thanks, I Used HD Tune to test the Hard Disk, and the performance are about the same found on google. I often defrag my hard disk too (auslogic disk defrag). All I can think of is some kind of compatibility issue with the motherboard, sata controller or whatever. I have a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Sata3. :-)
@Lele24781 then I just fail to think I guess.. switch to asus' 990fx :P it's better haha nah jokes there's nearly to no difference between gigabyte. msi and asus 990fx chipsets.. or yeah I got the crosshair v formula, might be slightly better than the fxa-ud3.. but don't really feel the urge to look up on to the differences.
A defect something something or not proper working something something sounds reasonable, but if tests show you good results then you might test out a new one just in case
Wow, your WD black magnetic disk boot up is only 30 seconds? I understand it's a lot more compared to the ssd nearby but....damn, 30 sec on a "normal pc"? this is great, my PC takes more than 1 minute to buut up (Samsung Spinpoint F4 320gb) :-)
@Tensorskills mmm....I don't know what to say, after installing ONLY windows 7 on a clean formatted HD, I'm able to boot up in no less then 45 - 50 sec. And I have a Phenom II X3 720BE, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD....I don't know what to think...
@Lele24781 also to add, what motherboard you have? and have you tried switching sata ports could be one half working (sounds so unrealistic if I say that :P), which I doubt though
@Lele24781 already checked the net.. just the normal 7.200 ... what I would do if I were you is get an alternative drive from a friend or an old one that is equivalent to yours and try it out with that one.. Else it could be anything.. and I'm not in the right mood to think xD up for 24hrs straight gonna sleep soonish
@Lele24781 Might have a small solution but no full succes is guaranteed... try defragmenting your disc. I don't know how much you used the hdd and how many times you reïnstalled windows etc.
But the way HDD work is that everything has to be indexed on the disk.. What defragging does is put all your files back into a nice order so your hardware has an easier way out (correct me in what I said wrong, I haven't used this solution much as a tip). I usually defrag right after I reinstalled windows
I've never owned ssd's myself but i'm planning to buy some soon.
I've heard that raid'ing less than 4 sdd's won't make any difference from buying just a single one. So i wanna ask you, how many ssd's did you raid in this test?
@hjorthpresents FOr ssd if u use 4 disks is faster normaly but not as fast in rocket raid 0 card. Rocket raid with 4 ssds can prove 1.200 megabytes per second. BUt rocket raid 0 controler cost 1.200 dollars. SO if u play with normal pc dont go raid 4 disks go only 2. BEcause u get only 20 percent more speed. DOnt waist ur money if u dont understand computer.BUy 1 ssd
Sorry, I'm not overspending by 1700% on a drive that boots 15-20 seconds faster. That's not practical. Yes, it boots quickly, but it's not worth the money.
the thing is for performance machines - at this point you might as well just buy a $200 machine thats 4 years old if you don't plan on putting a SSD in it because that is the main bottleneck for 90% of applications.
@rottenpancakes I stand by my statement - a good SSD wont help you run 3 monitors, or games in the best specs you can, but the speed difference on anything dealing with disk read/writes is big, and i mean massive big, that coupled with the fact that the performance on cpu/gpu/ram has only really increased by maybe 10-20%, in the last few years, and most of the best high end stuff out there is buggy or not taken advantage of by developers
@helenatorr You can find cheap SSD's if you go for a smaller drive. 60GB is enough for windows and your applications. Then just get a second 1TB HDD for all your media. Totally worth the money. It's just another 100$.

JagatReview, Can you please tell me how your top 2 raid bootup loaded so fast? 12-13 seconds! That's awesome. I've just bought 2 Vertex 3 MAX IOPS SSD's and windows logo loads in 24 seconds! Can you please tell me how to improve that time and what setting you used in either windows or bios. That would be so appreciated if you could :)

@john0022 look at some guides about turning win 7 services off make sure the ssd is in AHCI mode not IDE and turn off useless shit from loading at startup
