you've got to be a hell of a strong rider! I'm currently training a 5 year old Belgian (18,2H) and I'm hoping he'll one day be as easy to control as your guy!
"Yes, you can ride them!" This is definitively exaggerated - because most girls will not be able to handle a huge horse like Kelly does. What we watch here is, what an excellent rider like Kelly can achieve when training such a horse.
Big John is a wonderful horse - powerful, majestic and elegant: 5 stars for him!
But Kelly is the supertoprider: 10 stars for her !!!
Where are more videos to watch with such a marvellous team?
@jillysgem it all depends on the individual horses temperment and how they are treated/trained. personally I prefer Drafts and Mustangs, both are extremely intelligent, kind, and gentle.
@jillysgem it all depends on the type of training. any horse can be as kind and gentle and easygoing as another. a thoroughbred can be just as cool as a morgan, a tennessee walking horse can be just as gentle as a gypsy vanner.
grrr i hate when people say you cant ride them!!!!!! ive ridden them before , but it was at a trail ride and the horse behind mine went really crazy , then mine did and i jumped off and broke my arm :P but yes you can ride them , just like any other horse
I think the issue is people feel just SO intimidated by the size and strength of these horses. I may have ridden untrained Percherons, but they always feel like freight trains to me, no matter how well they're behaving. Yay Big John!
I'm so glad someone else appreciates the athletic ability of the big boys! I don't know how tall this guy is but we have a 19h guy and he does this too! Extra work = pay out! Sure the little ones will learn it better and condition faster, but the big guys will try and try and go and go!!
@Maccis001 during training, this is how you hold their head. it is a moving bend, rather then a circle bend. once the leg cues are understood, they will train the rein cues and the head will be corrected
Wow you have a beautiful horse! And he is so supple for being a draft! Congrats on how far you have come and keep it up! Whatever you are doing is working for him :)
you start with simple lead changes through trot, then when your horse is good with those you do simple lead chances through walk and halt.. then you should start in a figure 8 and switch your legs and hips and eventually your horse should get it!
A very honest horse you have there!

@DanVielwerth not all thoroughbreds are long lean lanky things. My horse is an example of that so is the one thoroughbred gelding at my work
