My dog is ok with taking treats nicely out of the hand, but he tries to snatch it from me when i'm using it as a lure and he is quite chompy..how would you go about teaching him not to do that?
@angele223 if he takes the food nicely the rest of the time have you thought about training him to target something with his nose and then use the target to lure him? so long as you reward him every time his nose makes contact with the target he should follow the target round as keenly as he does a piece of food without the danger of snatching for it. hope that is some help :)
my dog is gentle, she can even take food which is being held from the other end in my mouth and she will gently grab the other end and pull. also when you give her things by hand, she'll distinctly just calm down and slow down and its more like your handing her it like you would to another human, but her mouth is slow and articulate and closes at the speed of a hand going to grab it. once she knows its totally in her possession, she goes nuts.
What do you do if your dog starts to grab for the food after a few repetitions? She was being gentle at first with the first item (I used pieces of green pepper because she likes carrots) but then she started grabbing for it, and after several reps she started eating the pepper pieces...
Oops..And there was my mistake.I gave him the tasty treat from the hand. That was my ignorance of trying to take the shortcut..I'll try it again tommorow (this time exactly the way you've shown) and I'll let you know how r we getting on.
Thank you so much for your help and patience.. xxx
Hello there Sian! I am training this dog and he is acctually very cruel when it comes to taking food from my hand..
I tried your method on him but what he learned was - ''when I touch the carrot with my teeth I get a treat" He mouths it delicately - so I click ,and give him treat. But he almost bites my hand off when his reaching for it..He thinks that mouthing the carrot is what I wanted...
@mayaismo do you place the treat (the tasty one) onto the floor as a reward? because this is what you will need to do so as not to get the old behaviour back. also, don't get stuck with the carrot too long, you need to move onto something of higher value now that he is just mouthing that, try a very non smelly, bland dry dog food, or maybe bread, you will have to find something that he isn't too interested in but that he likes better than the carrot. hope that helps :-)
What a great, helpful clip! My adult dog (3 years) has always been gentle with taking things from the hand(not sure why, but greatful!). However, our new pup, 9 weeks old now, is another story. I found this at just the right time! Thanks again for another awesome video! Wish I had a camcorder so I could show this from the get go!
that's correct, don't tell your dog off but don't give them the treat either. then you should go back a step and use something that your dog won't grab at. try out different things, you want something that is not at all interesting to your dog so as you have a place to build up from.
So instead of the clicker, I can use alot of praise or a "Click" word like Okay. Is this correct. Does anyone have an opinion on the dog food Royan Canin?
Hey, it's usual to use the word "Yes!" in place of the clicker as it's a nice short word and you have to say it the same each time but I guess any short word would work in place of the clicker. Ooooh I'm so excited that you're getting your dog!! yay!!!
Start with the hoop on the floor and lure your dog through it with a treat or throw the treat through the hoop for your dog to go get it then increase the height of the hoop a little at a time. you shouldn't start training any jumping until your dog is over a year to 18 months old though as it is bad for your dog. it isn't crucial to start training at a young age, no. A dog can begin training at any age and become very good. however the sooner you start the sooner you see results :-)
you can mark the behaviour by saying 'yes!' in place of the click. you must say it the same way each time though, and I do mean exactly the same each time. The clicker is always the same sound and this makes it work really well. It's up to you, I just find the clicker makes life so much easier and works best for me :-)
so ,do you say "nicely" when she is having the food? /how long will she remember this ?i mean how often do u train your dog using the clicker training, say everyday?..
I don't say anything (though out of habit I do still say 'nicely' to Holly sometimes as she gets too excited when she is training) the idea is that the treat is the cue to take it nicely, not you verbalizing it. you would train this in short 5-10 minute sessions until your dog was taking the food nicely each time and going back a step if your dog started biting again and then once you were at that stage I would recommend giving your dog a refresher, like a few minutes on this about once a week.
she was getting the idea after about 5 sessions (short sessions) I was training this 2-3 times a day. she was very good after around a week of training but I must stress that each dog will be different and it depends on lots of factors how quick they pick it up. All dogs will respond to this in their own time though so keep at it if training seems slow!
Ah Sian, this is a great way to teach pups how to take food gently. :) In the future if I get more puppies or dogs who haven't been trained yet, I'll have to remember this video. :)
THANK YOU for making this! I added it to my favorites!!! I will be sending clients a link to this. You explain it so very simply clearly and perfectly! And in a way where the owner has little room for error! I love using this technique, it works so very well. I tell clients its called clicking for 'lips and tongue' not teeth. 5stars!
Thanks so much Emily, you are so supportive. I have changed my attitude towards training so much since watching your videos and not only do my dogs get more out of it but I do too! I felt really embarrassed talking on this vid though!!
I had that problem with Samson as a puppy and after alot of work I manage to stop him from snapping his food out of my hand but this is a really easy and good way of doing it.

Y start so late? I can see because of hip and knee problems but can I start the floor work young and when she grows start the air work?
hockeydiva93 2 years ago
yes, it's not good for their joints. you could start on the floor though, no problem with that :-)

Oh how would you train your dog to jump through a hoop? It is also crucial to train the puppy the basics within the first three months right?
